Gaming The Legend of Zelda | Earthquake: "It's actually ridiculously good, and keeps getting better." ★★★★★

You can parry the laser beams?!

My tactic against those things when they go into cnuty laser mode was to freeze time, hit them as much as possible then sprint around them in a circle so that the laser misses you

Yeah, takes good timing, but doable.

Yeah but using a seal. So cool.

Nearly done the fourth divine beast now.

I'm assuming when I've done that I retrieve the master sword and go and kill Ganon to finish the game? Even though the game is massive, the main story like itself seems somewhat short?

Anyhoo, plan on doing a lot of the sidequests before I go and do that anyway.

You have to find the master sword and then you need enough hearts to retrieve it

I’ve finally decided that as much as I’ve enjoyed this game it isn’t a Zelda game and I want a proper Zelda game. That’s all.

What's a Zelda game?

I dunno I was being a little sarcastic but I’ve recently just been feeling like some of the charm of the other games is missing for me. It’s the story telling, music and lack of traditional dungeons which I’ve been missing. I loved playing the game but it’s not really what I was looking for from a new title I guess.

I see what you mean.

It's far from perfect but I think it was a massive step in the right direction for the franchise. I really enjoyed the non-linearity of this game and I think it's definitely something they should stick with, the linearity of Skyward Sword for an example was fairly suffocating. Zelda's always been very much about exploring a world for me. I do think they could have added some extra layers to the story and made the Divine Beasts a little more challenging and diverse. Hopefully they can make some improvements for the next title.

I've seen the music get a lot of flack but I thought the low-key sounds suited the desolate, ruined world. I reckon you'd get sick of listening to the music if you explored the world to the sound of a Hyrule Field theme.

I think i liked it because it wasn't a zelda game.
It was brave, they'd reached a point where they were going through the motions with Ocarina of Time #5.
They just cut out all the tropes and pulled it back to something almost barebones that i kind of loved.

Finished it!

What a wonderful game, loved playing it (I must have put in about 60-80 hours since I bought it just over a week ago).

The battle mechanics, as always in a Zelda game, were wonderful to use. Slow-mo bow and arrow was class and whilst I thought weapons breaking was extremely annoying early on, it certain added a tactical element to the games at times, which I enjoyed.

The sheer scale and beauty of the game was breathtaking aswell. Even though I've completed it and done 3/4 of the shrines I still feel like I've left so much untouched. Constantly found myself veering off exploring, as opposed to doing what I set out to do.

That being said, this was not a 10/10 game. There were things I thought could have been better;

Divine Beasts - Aside from the Goron one, I enjoyed the fights allowing you to get inside the Divine Beasts. Great fun if a little easy. Once inside though, I couldn't help but feel disappointed. The lack of traditional style dungeons was a big negative for me. It's part and parcel of what a Zelda game is. Inside the Divine Beasts were just a bit too easy and lacking a certain something. Probably my biggest criticism of the game. Definitely need a return to dungeons in the next game.

Shrines - I finished on 78 I think, and I've very little desire to pursue them any further, because I don't think there is any need to. All the enemies by this point are easily defeatable (as was Calamity Ganon) and so I don't think there is enough off a motivation from the game to do so. It would have been nice to have a few 'super' enemies/bosses in the game. Enemies that were optional but required some time and dedication to prepare for (much like the weapons or dark aeons from FF, for example). 120 shrines is too much and whilst a few were genuinely challenging and fun to complete, I found most of them to be a bit mundane.

Side Quests - Needed to be some more in depth ones. If I asked @Redlambs to travel across the world taking pictures for me he'd tell me to feck off. A few too many uninteresting side quests in my opinion (though I suppose with the size and scale of the game that was to be expected).

With that said, I think this is the most fun I've had playing a game since Bloodborne (fecking love that game). Whilst they've stepped away from the traditional style of Zelda, I think this is definitely an exciting move forward for the franchise. Hopefully they can iron out some issues with the next game.

To those who've bought it, does the DLC add anything particularly interesting or is it not worth bothering with?

Vah Naboris boss.

Seriously, I cannot get my head around this guy - i'm upto eight hearts i think, more with elixirs, but I cannot seem to inflict any damage on him at all, then he rushes me, and i'm dead within two/three shots.

What did you guys wear (electric damage limitation?) or use to beat it...

Personally I don't get the no dungeons complaint. The Divine Beasts are the dungeons in this game

I agree with the direction it’s taking, it was definitely the right way to go, I just would like more variety in dungeons the next time rather than just expanded shrines and more focus on the story and fleshing out side quests. Places like Lurelin Village just seem like such a missed opportunity to do more with.

I've only just begun with the Champion's Ballad but the Trial of the Sword is definitely a challenging addition. Besides that it also adds a few pieces of novelty clothing like the Majora's Mask and Tingle's clothes.

Yeah, more villages like Lurelin and less stables would have been nice. They need to bring back the Bombers' Notebook for the sequel.

A nice idea for a DLC would be to restore Hyrule Town to it's former glory in a Tarrrey Town kind of way.

@R.N7 that as DLC would be the dream.

Also I just came across this video that is very important and you should watch it.

Some musings on the soundtrack:

So calm and lush. Probably my favourite piece in the game.

Dragon Roost island at 00:38.

It's basically Song of Time from OoT played slower. There's a lot of small references like that in soundtrack.

Soothing and hypnotic. Very ftting an oasis.

Two very Ghibli-esque pieces.

Sounds like something straight out of Okami.

This one gives me anxiety though as it sounds too much like a battle theme.

Seeing as I never play on tv I think I’m gonna play it on the big screen and do a no HUD playthrough.

Just deciding if I torture myself with master mode for it or not.

I finished Mario and started playing. Usually it takes me a while to get into OWGs but I just can't put this down. It's fecking unbelievable.

Hey @R.N7 ive been playing a new save, pro HUD only, no fast travel and no healing by sleeping. It makes this so much better experiencing the days and nights and using the cooking tools properly. I take back some of the stuff I said.

Nice!

I think I finally reached the end of my playthrough when I completed the Champions Ballad two weeks ago. Haven't picked it up again since.

The Master Cycle Zero is nice but I wish I had gotten it earlier in the game, the only thing I have left to do in the game now is collecting all the Korok seeds which I don't really fancy. I kinda wish there had been more bosses like Monk Maz Koshia in the game.

Feck me, I’m up to the Zora’s domain but where you need to get the shock arrows and I’ve come across my first Lynel... Jesus I can barely touch him, should I just come back and kill him later when I’m stronger?

Yea, I just avoided him and cautiously collected the required amount of shock arrows and met with Sidon? to begin the Divine Beast. If he spots you, even from afar, he’ll snipe you.

Exactly what I did, after about 40 failed attempts
Either when you're stronger or are better at dodging/parrying etc.
I actually got pretty close by the end. What actually killed me was my weapons/shield breaking when I got the flurry attacks after dodging. I only have 3-4 weapons and they’re about 20 damage, plus only 5 hearts. Does he drop weapons or shields? If so I might persist.

Yeah he'll give you a few things including a shield and weapon.

Hugely late to the party but what a fecking game. Bought a Switch on a whim because Playstation wouldn't accept my card payments any longer and I think Zelda alone has made it worthwhile.

Playing through it these days, just about got the master sword & have gotten the tower in most regions. Done 1 divine beast &, 1 dragon and 2 lynels so far.
Don't agree with those who claim divine beasts are good enough to be considered dungeons, they are way too small for that in my opinion.

Still enjoy the game mind, my only big criticism is that i really dislike how meaningless combat seems. I'm better off ignoring monsters than killing them (unless a bomb or two does the job) after taking down a few for the upgrade materials because of the resource cost. Probably down to me being a more typical jrpg-gamer who enjoys farming monsters for progress instead of a typical "engage for the fun of it" kind of guy.
My girl felt similar about the combat experience feeling meaningless and she only really plays the sims & ocarina of time.

I love this game, i just wish i had more spare time to play it!

I've done 3 of the divine beasts - I assume that the last one is in Goron City / by Death mountain. I feel like i've sunk a lot of hours into this without achieving a great deal.

Do you need to complete the divine beasts before going after the Master Sword? Because i've picked it up and put it down over a long period, i kind of feel out of the loop in terms of the actual story - i just assumed the Divine Beasts would lead to Ganon and that was the main quest, but i thought i'd need to get the Master Sword / Hylian Shield before getting to the end...

Am i missing something or overcomplicating it?

No, I went for the master sword after my first beast.
You just need 13 (I think) heart containers to be able to pick it up.

Assuming you get the gear and skill to deal enough damage to Ganon, you shouldn't even have to do any of the beasts.
