Gaming The Last of Us Part II (PS4)

And if you don't, move on, simple as that. I didn't take lots of opinions on this game seriously and I moved on, didn't cling to their posts.

And I didn't dig any holes, you are digging those imaginary holes trying so hard to make them legit, but they wont be other than in your minds. And that, my dear caftards, are your personal problems that I can't help you with.
No people's biggest issue is, you. didn't. play. the. game. I wrote quite a large response on why that is an issue, probably annoyingly long to read. But you're completely missing the point of story driven video games if you think they can just be watched.

I work at home on the PC whole day, so having it on the side is not a big deal, so yeah, I wouldn't call that wasting hours.

I will play through it....some day, when it's cheap, but doubt will ever go back to it several times after that like I did with TLOU 1.
Oh right, so I assume you do the same with other games you're unsure as to whether you'll like or not?

I always find the best way a game is seen is months down the line. Red Dead 2 was lauded as a masterpiece, but weeks or months later the flaws were exposed, whilst still seen as great.

Just like that game though, if I fail to get a connection with the character, I just can’t get into the game no matter how good it is.

This is so true, the hype can blind about many things.

I just hope people will take what I'll say now lightly, but the problem I have found so far with Ellie and Dina relationship that it's shoehorned in the story with no reason or purpose behind it than it being just there. Dina could have been just a friend or could have made her a male and it would have gone exactly the same so far. First game has an incredibly well done and developed father-daughter relationship between Joel and Ellie, he didn't like her at first and found her annoying but grew on with her as their journey continues and as they faced a lot of danger together till he became obsessed with her and considered her his new daughter, and the end result was just great. We went on from such a great developed relationship with a very strong purpose and impact on the story to some useless and pushed on one that could have been anything else and it wouldn't have affected the story so far At ALL, and I'm saying "so far" as I'm still at the start just to be fair but it doesn't look like it'll have any effect on Ellie's quest so what's the reason if it being here ? Nothing but it just being here. This is totally regardless of your opinion on the social politic matter.

I think Last of us 2 will get better with time. At first when I finished it, there was a certain blank feeling at what I have just experienced. Looking back at it now, I feel I understand the character and underlying story much better than I did at that instant.

It's not airtight story and it does fail in certain regards. But it's still a powerful experience that you have to play to understand it. Watching cutscenes is never going to cut it.

It's one of the unique game where I actually agree with both negative and positive review.

I don't get why their relationship would be useless or "pushed on". I'd say their scenes are wonderfully handled and their chemistry is great.

I mean by you writing ‘could have just been male’ you’ve ignored the fact that we already know she is a lesbian from the first game and it’s dlc. And by writing that it, shows that because it’s a lesbian relationship you think it has been shoehorned in, but if it was a guy then that would have been totally fine.

I’m slightly confused by this, what do you mean? RDR2 is absolutely a masterpiece and I don’t see how that’s changed in the months after it’s realise. It’s just an unbelievable game!

I have to say I haven’t played the first LOU as I never felt it would be my cup of tea but on seeing the response in here and online I think I probably need to make the time and effort to play both of them. I’m not a big fan of the uncharted games so I think that’s put me off. I know the story is very different but I’m just wondering if there any of you who love the LOU but find uncharted to be similarly boring.

I knew she's, and as I said I'm not talking about it from socially politically matter, that's why I urged people to take it lightly because I knew some got super angry when this get open. My problem is it has no impact on the story. While the relationship between Joel and Ellie was the main center of the first game, and the reason you were interested in it at all, and even the lesbian relationship in the DLC was done in a good way, the one in this game has absolutely no impact on purpose on the story, because Ellie's journey is centered to be around revenge from the start. Having a lesbian friend in this one serves absolutely no purpose than just showing their case and that's it ? By saying "could have been male" I just mean Dina could have been literally anything else than a lesbian and the story would have went on the same. You think otherwise ?

And again, I hope people will take this lightly because I'm talking from the game's perspective only.

Two of the best reviewer out there with polar opposite views and both actually make sense.

That's exactly why the point works so well for me. They are a couple and a natural couple, its not amazing, not special. For me that's is what I like about it. They are two friends who seem to be falling for each other. I don't think they even love each other a lot.
The relationship between Ellie and Dina isn't supposed to be as close as the father daughter bond she has with Joel.

It took weeks for people to notice that Rockstar haven’t evolved their mission style for years. It’s still seen as a great game but the opinions from launch to now have seemingly changed.

Yeah, I found that a little odd too.

Benefit of the doubt I think he was (badly) saying that to him Dina doesn't matter and she could be any companion.

However I think he's being a bit blind about it, as obviously in a story driven game like this we are going surely end up with more than "she's just there!"

Meh, the more I play the more it's obvious what geko was talking about. Druckmann mentioned it in a tweet too, some of the leaks referred to certain enemies which created a fuss that spilled in the actual game. It can only be that, as there's literally nothing else in the game (at least in the first 10hrs) to suggest any agenda pushing.

He is never going to answer us, because he simply hasn't got an answer that doesn't confirm it. Now the game is out and everyone can see, the wiggle room is gone. People can make their own minds up about how to see him in the future, but I will say that anyone who claims to give a shit about all the right wing nastiness in the world yet won't call it out (or in some cases bitch and moan when others do) you are part of the problem. If you see something, question it. It's not always going to be what you think, but if that person can't give a straight answer even weeks later, then...well...

I completely agree with you.

While I've yet to play it (my fecking telly delivery was delayed) to counter anything in your last comment(top post btw) I expect a certain poster will use your excellent analysis as validation for their previous comment

Off topic but its gameplay is a ball of shite that controls like it was released on Ps1.

Red dead redemption 2 has good story but controls are so bad that it almost made me give up on the game. Rockstar game design is outdated and probably hasn't changed from GTA 4. Those criticism were masked by initial excitement. Not sure how you can like Red dead Redemption gameplay and then feel Uncharted is boring. They both have same criticism of gameplay.

They are very much like Rockstar in that their games are always highly praised because they are great at the experiences they create, however the gameplay is always...let's say quirky

But I wouldn't say TLOU is anything like Uncharted, though I doubt you'll like them all the same. (Btw, I don't like the uncharted games much either).

I just mean Dina could have been literally anything else than a lesbian and the story would have went on the same.

That's true so why does it matter? The entire point of it is that the story would have been the same regardless of their orientation. It's a normal natural developing relationship which I actually think is done very well.

I would say that's a bit harsh on ND. The controls in TLOU are way better than in GTAV and the controls in this are way better than in RDR2! I mean, I agree that they are far from amazing, and I certainly agree with your critique on the silly controls layout but the combat, aiming, and character movement in this are miles better than RDR2. For one, ND don't have to give people an aim assist to make up for how terrible the aiming is!

No worries, I'm sure you'll enjoy it. For what it's worth I think it's decent enough, certainly enough for me to have gone so far into it ;) The problem with doing a critical analysis like that is I really could go into much more depth which would make more sense to people, but they wouldn't read more so that makes it look way more negative. But the reviews and online gamers and all that all seem to have missed the things that are there, since everything is for likes these days I guess that's why. I bet a fair few streamers have mentioned the flaws after raging though

As for geks, he won't dare get into another game design debate with me after running away when I told him we should the last time on Fallen Order ;)

Good thing people actually took it lightly and expressed their opinions on what I said in a respectful manner. No problem for me if we disagreed on the matter as long as it goes this way. :)

Now I'll focus on the gameplay which I hope will improve soon.

I'm not talking about just the controls, but in general. Not bad by any stretch, but never groundbreaking. But you know what you get with them, which isn't necessarily a bad thing.

I'm not sure what you mean by aim assist, are you talking about that bullshit slow motion thing? Cause yeah you are right about that

Well you handled it right by further explaining. A certain other person could learn from this ;)

I think there's enough to look at and see to take a break in between and that helps make the encounters that much better. One thing that bugs me though, as a loot-hog and an explorer, there's nothing actually to find! It's all very barren in terms of loot and collectables, which is a shame.

My biggest issue with the gameplay is related to this but subtly different. I'm going to put it in spoilers as although it's not story related in any way it relates to the collectables you get through the game.

The game is based on tension and the atmosphere, but to find the collectables that do exist you have to clear out an area and then go back through it to look for anything hidden. This breaks the flow for me as you can spend a good 20 minutes looting the area, followed by an area of relative calm before it gets tense again. It ends up feeling like each area is artificially calm to me rather than deliberately.

This wouldn't matter if they didn't put collectables that directly impact the gameplay in terms of crafting books in hidden areas . Just putting the crafting books in easily accessible locations and the true collectables in hidden areas would have solved that easily.

I am pretty sure you can find crafting books later if you missed in its original location and they will be pretty straightforward loot. But I do agree game encourages you to clear the area if you want to explore. But for me it came as good break between intense encounters.

What you say is probably what makes her character one of the best portrayals of a gay character in a game. Her sexuality does not matter in the sense of how the story plays out. She isn't identified by that trait, unlike some characters from other media that use their sexuality as a "hook". It doesn't come across as gimmicky either. I'm not sure why anyone would have a problem with her character being gay.

Is anyone else playing on hardest and refuses to use that shit listening thing? I hate that kind of wall hack mechanic in games. I mean there's already an easy mode, why add another crutch that breaks the immersion?

In fact if you bothered levelling up any of that first skill tree, you are bad at games.
Joking, but still git gud khed!

Interesting that you would use this word. What do you have against people who have broken their leg trying to slalom down a outwards delivery ramp at Costco using an empty metal tray (formerly populated by a selection of jam Danish pastries)?

Don't have an answer do you? Go on, tell me how you're really the victim here. Prick. Sorry

At that moment they are a burden, they are nothing but wastes of spam*!

Yeah. Only playing it on hard though here, I was quite miffed you couldn't turn it off but I've managed to just not use it at all so far. I usually play this with my platinum headset and with the 3d sound on so it's much better to just listen and guage where enemies are and take advantage of the luscious sound design  it also adds much more tension to the encounters.

Finished it(finally) Need some time for it all to settle but my immediate reaction is somewhat disappointed. It looks amazing, the gameplay, dated as it may be, is more refined, love some of the little Easter eggs scattered around.

However It is a little too long, the gameplay, improved as it is, can not carry the length of the game on its own, characters and writing are just not as strong as I would like. It is by no means a bad game, but it has little of that magic in the relationships and occasional lightness that the first had. Unremittingly grim throughout doesn't help, the first was dark but it had uplifting moments.

I know this dude to be most forgiving and positive "reviewer" out there and even he didn't like the story delivery, pacing etc. Polarizing game like this can't be "best game ever made" no matter how hard some journos want it to be, first one was universally beloved, this one, not really, it will not be in the TLOU, The Witcher 3 etc tier after some time.

This is a great sentence from a CV journo:
In trying to subvert expectations, The Last of Us Part II discards the best aspects of its predecessor to provide a rote revenge tale that is ill-considered, ending on a note that makes everything — all the violence, all the loss, all the struggle — feel utterly, hopelessly pointless.

A fellow Cohhilition member I see!

Surprised. Not many people on my friends list are playing it.
