The Guardian - Manchester United to sack Erik ten Hag after the FA Cup Final

Believe whatever you like. You asked how it could have come from outside the club and multiple people have told you.

no they havent  theyve told me, including you, how somebody the club told could have told the media

Why are people so upset about this? It's more than likely that the leak is from ETH's camp.

No we're not. We were talking about bringing in an interim manager for 7 games to steady the ship from April-June. It's not unheard of in football. Quite often you see clubs reap the rewards of doing that, instead of seeing sacking leaks emerge on the eve of our most important game of the season.
I see no point in doing so, and neither did the club, apparently. Hag made it to the final, we're probably going to lose, regardless of who is in the dugout, so let's get it over with and make a permanent appointment.

We'll have to agree to disagree on the interim thing.

It's literally been spelled out to you step by step. Would pictures make it easier for you?

They can keep their cards closer to their chest obviously. Why would anybody being 'sounded out' need to know he's 100% gone either way, as was reported? Why not just say we're looking seriously at replacements pending review end of season and tell anybody we seriously like to sit tight until 28th May before accepting elsewhere for example. You're convincing yourself that this leak is anything but a shit show before a cup final and is somehow different to the Woodward circus. It isn't, they've failed their first proper test
Chelsea and Brighton are both clearly moving fast to get their next manager in as soon as possible (not to mention all the other clubs in the market for a new manager). Asking managers not to accept other jobs on a very weak 'we might or might not be interested' isn't realistic.

We had no choice but to make decent contact with managers that we were seriously considering. Not doing that would have been incompetence of the highest order if it meant our first choice ended up going elsewhere.

Good decision.

I rated the work he did in year 1 in terms of making difficult decisions and turning aorund from Ole’s last season. But eventually, the possession based coaching that I expected based on his Ajax days never came and with his desire to make the best of what we had, signing the wrong players for big money and complete lack of improvement of the collective in his second year, there’s simply not way to continue with him.

I think we’re so far apart and the options are just weak, so I feel giving McKenna a go with a long term vision might just be the best way to go.
Horrible timing on the eve of the cup final though. Surely the club could have just put a statement out, even if it's prevaricating or economical with the truth: The club is 100% focused on the FA cup final and we fully back EtH, the staff and the players. After an appalling season the fans deserve to look forward to a cup final and every effort will be made to stop 115 charges winning a double.

Instead it feels very rotten and classless. Even if the manager and players already knew, or however the information got out, it just feels wrong for fans to know on the eve of a cup final. THAT should be the focus, nothing else.

On a side note, I wonder if Conte knew he was getting sacked before they beat us in the 2018 final? Maybe it doesn't have to be so pessimistic.

Chelsea levels of stupidity in this. How does it happen, how does it leak, how contradictive to the things INEOS has been saying is this as well. A day before the only possibility of silverware too. How much lower are we going? Seems like it gets worse and worse with every season..

now imagine he has 4 defenders with recovery pace who can play closer to half line and allow us to compact the game. Go figure

Right, so you're able to recognise he doesn't have that, but he isn't?

Or is it that he recognises it, but he's incapable of and/or refuses to do what a manager is supposed to do, which is, you know, manage?

Which is it?

yeah see above. thats still on the club

How? You need to bloody speak to people to hire someone? This is just a very odd thing to get pissy about. Who cares if it leaked? I care about the club getting the new structure right and challenging for the PL as soon as possible.

That just sounds patronizing imo. Maintaining a no comment stance is the right move.

There's a cup final on tomorrow! I highly doubt EtH or his camp would leak the news before a game of such importance. Whatever you think of the manager he seems like a guy who is professional and is focused on this and has said he wants to repay the fans for what's been a horrible season.

Or... he could have moved the forward line back a little bit to make it more compact.

If he insists to play a high forward line and a low back line and will NOT have any other way, we have the problem in the picture

Imagine he bought that type of player instead of wasting £400m on players who lack such physicality because he doesn't have a clue.

I just thought it might quiet the noise and shift the focus back where it belongs. The atmosphere building up to our final and most important game of the season, a cup final derby, is just weird at this point.

It’s cute people think we ever had a chance tomorrow that this news would somehow derail us

Start a gofundme for him then. We are not a charity, the man is a millionaire and comes from a family of millionaires.

Some of you really love simping for this club's failed managerial appointments.
This, the virtue signaling “but think about a poor man soon to be unemployed” is sickening

What a relief. I'm just glad this saga is over. I like what he said in interviews, I agree with how he handled the egos of Ronaldo and Sancho, but his tactics were a hot mess, and even a blindman could see that it wasn't working - yet still he persisted. Shit timing, we weren't beating City in the final anyway. So long, Erik, and thanks for all the fish.

On 24 months the guy had to deal with the
Greenwood saga. Sancho saga. Ronaldo saga. Rashford boozy nights in Belfast. Take over saga. Media abuse. Injuries (60+ different cases). A record of 82 different defensive formations total for a single season. On the verge of getting sacked just before his second final in 2 season.

All whilst having a trophy on the cabinet, and qualifying for CL football. If we are not an embarrassing banter club then I don't know what would quantify as.

We truly are Manager FC. People more concerned about treatment of the failing manager than what's best for the club. None of this is going to make a slightest bit of difference for the cup final. Ten Hag surely would have known for some time now. If he didn't then he's incredibly naive and delusional.

Right now, there is nothing they can say that wouldn't add more drama or make them look foolish later. Some of us joked about sacking him right before the cup final as punishment, but that was emotional posting after the Palace game. I doubt Ineos would be this petty, so assuming it was unintentional, best thing they can do now is stay quiet, find and close the leak.

The one center back we bought while EtH was here is literally that type of player though.

Gutted with the timing. Everyone knows I had a preference for him to stay but I can't argue with the end decision.

I'll be there singing his and the teams name tomorrow irrespective of the result. feck it. It's a final lets go for it.
So you’ve taken those splinters outta your arse

I doubt that was the case as they didn't sack him until July 13th. I remember reading about him taking a Chelsea training session just after the World Cup finished that summer.

But you think the club would?
We don't know where the info has come from, but i'm just annoyed at all this noise on the eve of a cup final. I don't think it's particularly good for the fans, especially the ones going to watch the game, when the big noise isn't about stopping City or bringing another trophy home.

But you think the club would?
The club has form for it. Everybody knew that Van Gaal was getting sacked after the 2016 final no matter the result. It was leaked to the media in exactly the same way this has been.

Very glad we have quietly gone about our new manager search with a minimum of fuss before the season has ended. Was worried that we were asleep at the wheel for the second half of the season.
