What's your favourite single-player FF?

For me the world of Ruin wasn't much of a world at all.

It was pretty empty with the only real things left to do was get back your party members and do a few sidequests before fighting Kefka. If I remember correctly, you can pretty much go straight to the final dungeon once you get the airship and you only need to re-recruit a few members to do so?

(That would make the final dungeon difficult considering your party gets split up but I'm sure its been done before)

Favourite game would have to be 8 for me personally but it did have its flaws, main one being the story and Ultimecia being one of the worst FF villains, its just the one I had the most fun with, sometimes I would forget all about the main story and just play triple triad.

Objectively speaking though, 9 is the best, perfect culmination of the 7 previous games. Good sidequests, main story, main character who didn't spend half the game moping, fleshed out side characters you could make an argument for Vivi/Garnet being the main character instead of Zidane whose real importance to the story isn't fully fleshed out until halfway in the game.

Personal order I would rank them (ones I've played): 8 > 9 > 6 > 7 > 12 > 10 > 4

I'm serious about ranking 4 dead last by the way, I appreciate its a great game but I have my reasons. I played the DS version

Just in case anyone hasn't played it yet. Things that I didn't like was almost every party member "dying" and then rejoining the party. Throughout the game where you feel that every single party member bar Cecil has perished only for them to magically turn up alive somewhere and some didn't even rejoin the party or effect the story after that (Edward notwithstanding) so I was left wondering what is the point?

After the 3rd or so "death" it just felt like a cheap way to make the story more emotional. Party members who in my view, didn't need to be revived, Palom + Porom, causing the deaths of two children would have put Golbez right up there with top tier Final Fantasy Villains and Yang + Cid who both made sacrifices.

Cecil having to start over again at level 1 as a paladin in what to me was the hardest part of the game, not a big deal and I get why they did it but it just felt tedious

Didn't like Golbez as a villain. His reason for doing what he did seemed altogether weak. Ultimecia needed to possess a younger sorceress to survive, Sephiroth went crazy as a result of finding out he was an experiment and Kefka was a maniacal soldier bent on world destruction. Golbez? His jealousy of his younger baby brother Cecil allowed Zeromus to mind control him, so he wasn't even acting on his own accord, neither did he remember that Cecil is his brother. I thought it would have been much better if Golbez had remembered from the very beginning that him and Cecil were brothers and was in full control of his actions

Thing is, while I agree in theory about Sephiroth, is it Sephiroth or Jenova? All those interactions until the end are Jenova taking on Sephiroths image, right?

I'd prefer Cloud if they didn't paint him as an emocunt in everything ever about FFVII itself, ignoring all that as best I can, Cloud would be my fave with Zidane a close 2nd, hmmmm, Cecil was pretty amazing too....
For me Cloud is easily the best protagonist on FF games (and my second favorite protagonist in the entire gaming). Cecil the second and Zidane being the third.

I was listening to a podcast and the guy REALLY hates Squall, I don't know why, he's very cynical but he's not a fecking emo.

Trying to remember each of the others now, I'd think Bartz/Butz could have been more developed, they could have done some more with Squall too, he had proper potential, despite spending most of the game mopey over a bird he liked. I can't recall much of 2 at all, IIRC the story had potential, but the game system meant I didn't push far. The first, of course didn't have proper characters, I can't recall 3 too well either, need to play that again. Tidus seemed a bit dim at points, and like 6, I guess you could argue Yuna was as much the lead as him, despite it being him you control.

What more could they have done with Squall?

He started off as a rude loner who didn't know how to interact with others but at the end of the game he met his father, actually made friends, started to care for others and learned to express himself. I would honestly say that him and Cloud were one of the few protagonists to have notable character development, ie finished the game a different person compared to when they started, of course Cecil wins out over both of them on that front.

I love Squall, but i think that's because he's a character i can really relate too, plus he's quite funny when he's being ultra depressing to everyone.

Example -
"Squall, do you think he's dead?"
"Probably"

No comfort from him, just straight to the point and blunt. Then he really develops into someone that can actually let out his emotions.

The scene at Galbadia when he goes mental and runs out is great!

Zidane is a twat. That is all.

Agree. That game seems to get washed over but it had so many good points. Though it probably requires a second play through to be appreciated more.

Agreed, helps a lot that it has one of the best sidequests in the entire series, mark hunting, probably spent time doing that then I ever did with the main story.

Just got back, rolling a good ol' smoke then back to the grind. I wonder what level they'll get to whilst waiting for the two others.

Yo go full steam ahead mate. Don't wait up. I'll still be able to talk to you about it as this must be at least my 8th play through! I tend to play it every couple of years

He's better than Lightning, at the very least, probably 12's one too, as I can't remember the slightest thing about him.
Haven't played those games. By ever, I didn't mean only FF games but basically every RPG I have ever played.

Vaan, whose only link to the story was that his brother served in the army under another party member.

After that point, he literally had no effect on the story or role to play. Take him out of the game and nothing would change, which fits the theory that he was meant to be a blank slate representing the player.

Explains a lot, felt very much like they were trying to make it a single player MMO style game.

Pretty much, he's only there so you as player can tag along with the more important characters like Ashe, Basch and Balthier. It worked well enough for me.

Honestly don't know how long I can play Chocobo Hot & Cold for. It is rather tedious when you've played the game as many times as I have now. The rewards really are worth it though

Aarrgh!!!

Spent a full minute in the vicinity of a "Kweehh!!!", found the bastard chocograph with 2 seconds left and ended up missing it

I didn't mind Hot & Cold, thought it was fun enough.

Not a patch on 7's chocobo breeding & racing, though!
Yep. It was quite fun though very repetitive and I started it playing late which made it a bit rustrating.

The chocobo breeding & racing was on another level  When I finally made the gold chocobo, it really felt a big achievement. And then the game got broken by finding KOTR materia which wiped the floor against any enemy except Ruby/Emerald.

I almost went and trained the gold chocobo to race, just on principal.

Hell, once you're set up, KOTR and Mime can wipe the floor with the weapons too.

Bit daft to one shot the final bosses, though!

What is the highest speed you achieved? I have seen someone on youtube getting 176 speed and 999 stamina. I wasn't near that.

Also, the surprisingly odd combo of using a gold chocobo to get KOTR, using KOTR to beat Emerald, use Emeralds prize to get a gold chocobo...

"What?!"
What?!

Never knew that. Shamefuly I admit that I lost the duels with both Emerald and Ruby. It was my first FF game though, on 8 I defeated Omega and in 9 I defeated Ozma who apprently is the strongest boss in FF games (except the annoying one in FF3 (?) which is impossible to kill). In my next playthrough, I will get my revenge.

I'm not sure, I'm sure I got more than 176 though! I'll have to check my Vita's save.

I never bothered beat the weapons until my playthrough last year, once you know what to do, they're as easy as anything.

I usually find it's the early bosses that are harder in RPG's, the ones that can smsh you if you screw up, and you still only half know what you're doing.
