What's your favourite single-player FF?

Well his first attack did 1,500 to everyone so I'll need to be able to keep him alive for enough time to attack. Yay, more grinding.

Is my love of these games a masochistic thing?

Hehe, then a lot of people here are masochistic. I guess you need to level up until you have decent HP, then skip, skip, skip until Quina has her move and then instant kill. Until I discovered that I was suffering, fighting the bastard with doing reflect in all my party and then using Vivi's black magic on my party who reflected the magic to him. Not an easy fight.

I see someone here is going through ff9 for the first time.

Quick question, how many of you go through these games without a guide and how many stuff do you find first time through or miss?

I usually manage to find most of the sidequests, equipment and what have you but I always miss the rarest weapon and the hardest optional boss or I'm too weak to take him on.

Randomly found the optional boss in 9, got killed in one hit despite finding every single piece of equipment from chocobo hot and cold. Still don't know what I need to do to get Steiner's final weapon either.

I could check a guide but I think these games are at their best when you go in cold and have no idea what to expect or who will end up in your final party.

I play first time through myself, on replays I don't care.

You'll never get Steiner's best weapon without knowing about it and what to do ahead of time, in fact it's such a crappy way, I wouldn't even try it anyway.

Is it the weapon you need to get within 12 hours from the start of game? And is located on the final dungeon?

I heard about it but in order to get it you need to play the game only for that and reload everytime you fight many random battles.

Yup, and it's in an easily missable part of the dungeon, IIRC you have to click behind a pillar or something. IIRC, back in the day, there was a way to skip cut scenes by opening the lid of your playstation, though many just used an Xploder code to either skip scenes, or just reset the clock. You could also just roll the clock by leaving the game on for ages.

I wouldn't get the thing on principal though, RPG's shouldn't have time limits like that. One of my favourite characters in Suikoden II had a side story that had a secret time limit like that, much more forgiving, but again, nope on a nope stick.

Yep. They are games that should be explored as long as you can, and longer is also better. Also, I just don't see the point of playing the game an extra time only to get that sword. I have never cared about trophies and their equivalents. Play the game in order to enjoy it and try to play as much side quests as possible, If it lasts long, then even better :D

I don't think there's a single thing in the game that can't be beat without it, tbh, I'd also guess you can get his attack to 9999 without it.

As for RPG's, that's about exactly how I feel.

Yep, I think that I had Steiner in the most difficult battles (against Ozma and also in the final battle). He is pretty powerful even without the ultimate weapon.

Yup.

I also firmly believe that anyone using a guide for their first playthrough doesn't deserve the game. The second and after is fine though.

When/if I beat FF9 that'll be the 7th I've beaten guideless. After this I suppose I'll have to dig out FF8, I don't know why, but I'm not looking as forward to that one.

I used to keep Steiner about as much as possible, I'd have played a spinoff with him as lead.

The part of the game with him alone, with the Blood Sword() is one of my favourite parts of the game.

This doesn't work. I've tried it

Ah, no.

I thought you meant let the clock roll over 100 hours and reset to 0.

Haha, just looked into it and apparently it takes 2-3 years!

Yep. At the times when there weren't emulators, that was a good way to get Sneiner's final weapon :p

Started ff7 last night and going to give it a proper go for the first time. Enjoyed what I played which is weird since I hated it last time. I think it's just so awkward on the ps3, the analog sticks don't work and O is action instead of X which led to me going up and down in the elevator a good few times at the start.

I changed FF9 to have O as select and X as back because I preferred it that way.

By the way, had a night off from FF9 last night, blame Moyes/United/Fred The Red..

I think that until the third disc pretty much the party will be 'chosen' for you. Even there there will be missions when you can't choose certain members.

There's something about IX, despite having its epic sad moments, and being as deep as any FF, that it just feels like a light-hearted adventure. As the discs go on, you never loose that sense of wonder, it's what makes each disc equal or better than the last, highly impressive stuff really.

So I've never played a Final Fantasy game. Just gonna let that sink in.

What you are waiting then. Get your SNES/PS1 from your garage (or alternatively download an emulator) and start playing them.

4, 6, 7, 8 and 9 are the FF games I have played and all are from very good (4 and 8) to great (9) to masterpieces (6 and 7). Apparently 10 is a very good game too but I have to wait till summer for it.

You're playing Bravely Default, that's more Final Fantasy than any actual Final Fantasy since 10(or Lost Odyssey).

But yeah. Fix that.

Yeah now I'm into Bravely Default I think I should try some Final Fantasy. Any recommendations on where to start?

1,3 and 5 are all very good games too. 2 is shit, incredibly shit. Actually unplayable unless you abuse/break the system.

10 is brilliant and I'm looking forward to playing it again. IMO the last truly great min series/official Final Fantasy, but it was the start of the decline.

9. It's about the perfect game to start with, no odd mechanics to get used to, incredible graphics(especially for it's time), fantastic story, characters, gameplay and about the most inoffensive FF, ie, it really has no haters, even the other magnificent FF's all have their haters.

It's cool Joe, i've played 3-4 hours of FF7 and i'm now so lazy and apathetic i can't stretch my arm out to the left, pick up my Vita and play it. I'm doomed to this life.

Nice one guys, I'll get on an emulator later and watch my life go down the drain. Awesome.

It's probably good that he starts with 13. He'll be so put off that he won't play the rest and his life won't go down the drain! :p
