What's your favourite single-player FF?

Ah, fair play. Aye, sad times we're in. :( Dream Drop Distance is meant to be really good but there isn't much turn based stuff going around currently.

I miss the turn bases strategy of FF the most. The big thing that got me into them.

Just got Vincent. I managed to level up a fair bit at the Shinra Mansion. Who shall I take out of my party for him? He looks so cool. I have Barrett and Aeris at the moment.

I may put a good few hours into this today instead of football manager. I'm so excited to play X again after playing this. As much as I'm enjoying this I still think I prefer X, still a long way to go though.

Vincent was my favorite after Aeris. He's such a cool character. I tried to level up all of them at about the same level, though I used Aeris most often (considering that her healing abilities in the very beginning are great).

Wait before you jump on conclusion, you are coming near the ending of the first disc which is fecking awesome. The game will become even better than it is :D

That's why I'd like to keep her in really. I guess there's no real benefit to me keeping Barrett in so he may have to get the boot.

Barret is pretty powerful though. After the first disc he and Tiffa were most of the times in my part (though there is an another character who has an insane final limit). Use all of them and try different things, it's more fun that way!

How do you even get more limit breaks? Everyone is stuck on two.

To get the second part of a level of limit break, you get more by using the first part (say, to get Cross Slash, you use Braver x times). To get the next level and the first part of that, you need to kill more enemies in any way with that character. So to get the next level after Cross Slash (Level 2, 1), you need to kill about 40 enemies with Cloud.

Then do the same thing again through the levels.

Braver - x times
20 kills
Level 2 limit x times
40 kills
Level 3 limit x times
60 kills

Something like that.

Something like that, but the kills are in the hundreds for the 2 and 3 limits, IIRC. I got all my limits fighting the AP farming groups. There's a bunch that are quite good for that early in the forest just after Mt. Nibel and before Rocket.

I sometimes set Barrett as my healer. Sounds stupid, but being long range and hard to kill, along with a good attack so he doesn't have to use MP outside of healing and reviving. Works well enough.

Also, don't forget that you have to choose the desired limit break on the menu. I went until the middle of the second disk without kniwing that and wondering why the heck I was still on level 1 limits.

The last limit is more difficult to get cause you usually have to do somthing extra (like a side quest) but it's totally worth it.

Ha! When I was a kid on my first play, couldn't for the life of me figure out how to do Lv. 2 Limits after unlocking them.

Omnislash...

Right in the stones.

Yeah, that does seem a low estimate actually!

Just had a look, not far off, and overshot for some characters.

Cloud, it's 120 and 360, where as Vincent it's 40 and 96, everyone else is in between. I guess it's to do with power, and some guys only having 4 rather than 8.

Oh aye, I meant me with my 20, 40, 60 nonsense. ;) You'd have the first part of level 2 and 3 in no time at all by that estimate after getting Cross Slash and Climhazzard.

That's what I meant, your estimates weren't as far off as I expected, seems I was judging them all by Clouds grind.

Cait Sith has all/both his limits after 40 kills.

Tbh, I probably had most to level 2 before leaving Midgar, definitely before the new continent.

Just checked and my Cloud has a Limit called Blade Beam. feck knows how long I've had that!

So, for example, if I want to unlock Aeris' second limit I'm going to actually have to start using Seal Evil?

Limits are in level. There are four levels but because the fourth one is a bit special (you need to do a sidequest for it) let just ignore that for the moment.

Every level has two limits. The first one comes when you get that limit level. The second one might be used only if you use the first one for an amount of times (usually under 10 times). In order to go to the higher limit level you need to make an amount of kills (usually a few hundreds). You don't need to have the second limit of the previous level to be able to use it. So, hypothetically you can have only the first limits in three levels. Of course, it is better to have all the limits (and that is also a pre-requisite to get the final limit).

Ahh, I think I understand that then. So with Aeris for example, how does it work in terms of making a kill? Or is it as long as I use Healing Wind in the battle for example, and then defeat everyone eventually, it will go towards the count?

To get her 2nd Level 1 limit, you'll have to use the first, Healing Wind, a few times.
To get her Level 2 1st Limit, you have to kill so many monsters with Aeris(80 for that one), but can use anything to kill them, magic+all would probably be the quickest way for her.

Okay, now it makes sense. I don't use many attacks in general with Aeris which is probably why she is lagging.

The Aqualung enemy skill is probably my most favourite thing ever, though.

How do I get that, and can it be done without going through too much effort?

I've literally just got the plane thing that i've forgotten the name of already.

You have to get it off the Midgar Zolom in the swamp.

Dunno how powerful you are, but make sure your Enemy Skill user has Elemental + Fire on their armour, and you're all healed up. You need to beat it until it stands up tall(Poisoning it helps), wait for it to use Beta, which you should now easily survive. Then fire Beta right back at it to finish the fight.

Save beforehand though, in case it flicks your Enemy Skill user out of the battle.

I do have those two actually. Very handy for Aeris.

Would the Midgar Zolom be more difficult to beat than the big monster in the safe at the Shinra Mansion?

I can't remember, but it shouldn't be, just gotta be careful Beta doesn't it you too hard. Big Guard will help. You also want to be careful not to kill it before it can Beta you.

Last time I played, I actually got it passing through the swap first time, at level 15 or so, but that took careful preparation, IIRC, but by your stage it should be pretty easy.

You'll beat the Midgar Zolum now. There's a boss coming up actually which uses something similar to Beta and Aqualung, but it's the lightning version instead. The skill is called 'Trine' and it's one of the few times in the whole game you can get it.

He has the Tiny Bronco, so he's just passed that bit.

Ah yeah I see now. Just read the bit about Vincent and thought Mt. Nibel was next.

I think Trine one of the only enemy skills you can actually miss come to think of it. Off the top of my head, there are two more opportunities to get it. I know you can get a lot of the missed ones in the final area but I don't think you can with that one.

I have Trine! I have Aeris and Cloud both equipped with Enemy Skill materia so I don't seem to be missing out on many.

Yeah, 3 spots, Mt Nibels boss, the ice cliff, and the pagoda boss.

Nice.

Aye. That thing at the Ice Cliff with Magic Breath as well...that's a beast of a spell when you get it! I seem to remember that absolutely fecking me up and sending me back a couple of hours when I was younger.

Just beat the Demon's Gate boss in the Temple of the Acients. Most difficult boss I've faced so far.

The story is getting really good now though!

Oh, and the Beta Enemy Skill

You're almost in the ending of the first disk (around the middle of the game). Nice! Demons Gate is likely the most difficult boss until now, right?
