BioShock is one of the most overrated games ever. Don't get me wrong, it's still an amazing game and one of the top games of last decade, but still it shouldn't be near top games and in many lists it is there. Even worse, it has been praised as one of the best RPG ever, although it isn't an RPG at all. Again saying that is an overrated game, IMO it is overrated like Chrono Trigger, an amazing game really but not one of the best games ever. Or maybe just my opinion.

Now answering to your question, Deus Ex is really amazing. I have said many times that it is almost impossible finding a gamer who has played it and doesn't have it on top 5 - top 10 games. Saying that, you have to know that the game is an RPG-FPS hybrid and it is more a FPS than an RPG. By that, I mean that there is no party, no companions, you are solo. Obviously that means also that the dialogues are a bit more limited than in RPG games. But still the story is very good, but very good for an FPS not an RPG. I would say that from shooters I have played, only BioShock Infinite (a great game on it's own but not as good as original BioShock) has a better story. So personally I don't think that the story can be compared with RPG greats but it's still a great story and different from anything I have played. It's more a James Bong/Bourne (with many elements like global conspiracies and underground organizations) story than the stories of RPG. But, the main reason why Deus Ex is so highly rated is not because of it's story but because of gameplay. I would say that it has the best gameplay ever. It is very open and you have always many alternatives to finish the job, be it going crazy and killing everyone (likely be killed in process many times), going by stealth, using mines or hacking turrets. Everywhere you have a lot of options and a lot of things that can help you. Usually the best options are not run and gun and as I said it isn't a Half Life game when you can go and shoot everybody. Especially in the beginning you have to be extra careful cause your personal character is pretty shit at everything and enemies can be stronger than you (for example at times I used a very cnutish tactic, shooting at a terrorist and making him to follow me and then running near some caps who killed the terrorist when they saw him shooting ). Riot Prod (charger) is your best friend, especially at the beginning. I remember how much time I spend crawling in shadows and then going behind the enemy and taking him down with the charger, it is almost always a better method than shooting him. Another good part of it is that bosses (who are extremely powerful) are entirely avoidable, be it by doing certain things before or by planning the battle before you start it which mean that they'll get dead before they can shoot. The game is challenging, and if you play it as a standard shooter you will have a lot of trouble.

While the game has a great story I wouldn't say that the story is as good as FF games (or BioWare games which personally I think that their story is even better than those of Square games) but the gameplay is exceptional and worthy for it alone to be played. I am not a big fan of shooters, but that game is much more than a shooter. It is a perfect hybrid of a shooter-RPG with stealth elements. Now I am going to start playing System Shock 2. According to old school gamers it is the only game who can be compared with Deus Ex and pissed on BioShock.

Quality.

Nice, thanks a lot for that. Have seen some of the gameplay and know it's my cup of tea; glad to hear that the plot ranks highly too! Agree with that comment on Chrono Trigger - I'm very fond of that game but it is undoubtedly overrated in modern day terms. It's like the 'cool' gamer thing to say it still shits on everything else or something, when really many other games have surpassed it in almost every way.

Must admit that of the Bioware games I've played I've not actually found the story amazingly strong or drawn out, but that's probably more a thing of preference in terms of what you want from a story and how convoluted you want it to be. Mass Effect and Dragon Age have fantastic worlds and great characters, but the plot is done in half a dozen phases or so and is sometimes secondary to the setting in my opinion. I think that's the strength of the Western RPG more often than not in comparison to the Japanese counterparts, though - they enrich the history and setting you're in so much and give you a good story amidst these fantastic worlds. The presentation of the story too in something like the first Mass Effect is absolutely marvellous; it's pretty much perfect how it evolves. Damn...the voice acting in the second one as well...I was blown away by that game when I played it! I was in awe of Mordin Solus' character.

Will definitely get on Deus Ex at some point, but I think I'm going to go through Bioshock et al and come back in a year or so given what you've said there. Have learnt my lesson from Torment and won't play something that good again before exhausting other similar types of games I wish to enjoy! I really want to go through things like Baldur's Gate 1 and 2, KOTOR, Dragon Age 2, the last Mass Effect, finish the Witcher/play The Witcher 2, etc...but I can't quite gear myself up for any of them after that. Very annoying.

Good thinking. BioShock is good but it isn't even in the same level as Deus Ex, and after you play it every game similar to that doesn't look as amazing. Haven't played Baldur's Gate games and Baldur's Gate 2 is usually rated as the best Western RPG ever, so definitely have to play them (and Torment too). Definitely play Kotor, I don't know about older games but there isn't a better WRPG that has been launched after it, better than Dragon Age and Mass Effect IMO. And like you, I haven't gone yet to The Witcher games, likely going to play them sometimes but not a priority.

About BioShock games, BioShock 2 can easily be skipped, but the original BioShock and BioShock Infinite are quality games. The first one has an amazing world while Infinite has a beautiful world too and it has also a terrific and complex story. Not as good games as Deus Ex though.

Had heard the second Bioshock wasn't all that so might give it a miss. Same with the 2nd Deus Ex by the sounds of it.

Shit, that must be good (KOTOR). That'll probably be the one that gets me back into them. Baldur's Gate 1 and 2 will have to wait - there's up to 300 hours of gaming there by the sounds of it!

The Witcher is a strange one...it's a really good game, but the main guy is so bland that it kills me to listen to him. Not necessarily the quality of dialogue but his actual character really grates, and it's a maybe a little bit weird how much emphasis there is on shagging around on that game. I don't know whether they're aiming for a mature audience or sexually frustrated teenagers, but it's far more prominent in this game than it is with any other I've come across. Stopped after the second chapter because I wasn't really being gripped by the storyline, but I still liked the combat/world enough for me to think I'll go back to it at some point and give it more of a chance. I absolutely adore one of the pieces of music on that game too - one of my favourites.

But yeah...Dragon Age/Mass Effect are a clear step above it, in my opinion. If KOTOR is a step above those two then I'll have to play it. :D

Pricks, talking about other games. Made me think they was more news.

I couldn't play it, it looked a terrible game to me, though if it didn't had that name probably it would have looked better. Going to give it another try in the future though.

KOTOR is not a step above Mass Effect or Dragon Age, but I'll say that it is slightly better than them. Probably similar to FF6, FF7 and FF9. All of them are terrific games, but the majority of people who have played them will say that FF6 is better than the other two, but not on an another level. It could also be that KOTOR is older than them and the majority of players have played it first so liked it more. Also, Mass Effect is heavily influenced from it, if you ever play it you will see the similarities. And heck, it is Star Wars after all so it must be pure gold. But from what I have read, Baldur's Gate 2 is even a better game.

Gets absolute rave reviews - so much debate on the internet about these, Icewind Dale and Torment.

Tides of Numenera may well blow them all away. The game took 6 hours to fund on Kickstarter and eventually fetched about 5 times the original target. Was a bit gutted to find out the other day that because it's going to have so much more content than originally intended, it's going to be 2015 when it's released. Ahhh...cannot wait.

Best game ever is between goldeneye and banjo Kazooie

feck system shock.

Downloaded the Goldeneye soundtrack the other day funnily enough. :D

This is the first time I heard those games names, the rating seems to be good for them though. But from what I have read, only Deus Ex is comparable with System Shock 2.

We'll see if this happen. So many games have been over-hyped and then disappoint me. Same with Watchdogs, I have high hopes for it but wouldn't be surprised if it won't be as good as people are expecting.

Ahh...Goldeneye. I get all nostalgic just thinking about it - I don't know anyone that played that back in the day and didn't adore it. No comparison with something like Deus Ex because it's just an FPS but, unless I missed something back then, that was the game that really introduced the genre to consoles. Seems odd to try and analyse it any depth though... it was just something everyone knew was amazing and that was that. It took until the Timesplitters games for anything half as fun to come out.

True, there is always that possibility. It's a lot more unlikely with a game like this than something like Watchdogs in my opinion though given the difference in emphasis in comparison to most other games. The original is so good because the writing and dialogue are leagues beyond anything else, and the same writers (as well as others) have made it a priority to not only repeat this, but also put more into the character interactions and depth whilst doing so. The combat on the original was also shite in my opinion and is guaranteed to be improved upon.

Could disappoint though like you say, you never know. Never any guarantees. I think the only real danger with Tides of Numenera based on what I've read though is retreading old ground. They themselves have admitted that the game is likely to move in a somewhat similar direction to the original Torment, and the story with 'The Last Castoff' is looking suspiciously similar in terms of memory loss and rediscovery of identity to that of the original's 'Nameless One'. That is only something that would affect players of the original though; people who jump straight into TON will not feel that drawback. There are also distinct changes in the philosophy of the universe, with this game being more orientated towards the cementing of legacy in this life as opposed to Torment's fascination with the nature and truth of existence itself. Hopefully that will steer away it away from the original Torment enough for it to be an amazing game in its own right, although it's going to be quite difficult to implement that same level of shock and awe that the original did if the story progresses too similarly. There is a moment in that game that I will honestly never forget... so good!

Replaying FF8 and in the middle of getting Tonberry King. Carded about 50 Tonberrys until I realised you have to kill them for him to show up. FML.

You have to kill around 20 of them. A tough and time consuming part of the game.

Trying to play A Realm Reborn. People are saying its good and it was decent while I played it a little bit, but the login issues these guys are having are ridiculous

I've been considering getting 14 as well. It looks good but they are having massive stability issues. If it stabilizes in the next week I'm going to get it, I do love a decent MMO!

H
Completely un-necessary comment into a wrong thread. However agree that Deus Ex is absolutely amazing.
huh? Haven't you lot been discussing this topic on this and the last few pages?

Ermahgerd, the music for FFVII on steam has been fixed. The midi shite has been banished to the deepest pit of hell.

Good. The abomination.

They should redo all of FF7 with the soundtrack in this style:

Or not, obviously. That would be ridiculous. I just thought something of that level of innovation needed to be brought to everyone's attention.

Yeah, I'm loving some of these! Really surprised by the quality of sound; always just assumed the majority would be fairly cheap MIDI-ish type tracks.

Got any recommendations, Earthquake? Best ones I've found barring that one so far are Chrono Cross/Trigger ones, but I'm guessing there's a shed load of quality FF ones.

*Excluding electric guitar, that is. No offence to the electric guitar obviously, just never been too much of a fan.

I like that. Both those tracks are so far removed from the originals in terms of structure that they're just great in their own right. Will download that album then, cheers. Here's another good one:

Don't know if you've played Chrono Cross but this is one of the best I've come across so far.

Been missing out ignoring this lot. Downloaded the Chrono Trigger Symphonic album by them and never listened to it for some reason.

I'm afraid Chrono Cross is one I missed along the way, need to download it sometime.

I think I overrated it when I was playing it, to be honest; in retrospect, it's half way between being amazing and a complete clusterfeck. The storyline is hugely ambitious, yet there is nowhere near the correct level of dialogue in the game to do it justice. Likewise, there isn't enough text to flesh out 6 characters properly, never mind the 40 or so that they throw at you.

Still, the gameplay itself is quite good, and if the storyline is kept up with it is excellent. The soundtrack alone makes it a must-play though if you're into game music - definitely Mitsuda's magnum opus. Chrono Trigger's and Xenogears' OSTs are good but the sheer diversity and range of Chrono Cross' is amazing. So much good music!

Now that i've got my Vita i've cracked open FFVII again. Loved it last time and got around half way but sometimes I just get too lazy to even play games so gave up on it. Looking forward to it, but a pain that I have to start from scratch.

Are there any items etc. that I can't afford to miss out on?

There are only really a couple of items that could be seen as being important and missable. They're right at the end of disc 2, though - literally the last place you go to before the end of the game. Everything else, like Earthquake says, is more useful relative to the parts of the game that you're at.

I'm also playing FFVII on the Vita at the moment. Never played it before myself. Well, i say playing but i've been a bit distracted lately by another game and i probably won't go back to FF for a bit. It's ok though, what i played i was really enjoying!

The game with the best game mechanics in RPG genre, one of the best protagonists ever, definitely the best antagonist in video gaming history and likely the most touching moment in the entire history of gaming (and the soundtrack that is attached to it who is usually as No.1 in the list of video game themes) is just OK?

Mate, i've played about 2 hours. Give me a feckin' chance ffs.

Ultimate fail from me. Lost about an hour of gameplay because I didn't save the game.

I thought I'd saved it, twice in fact, but for some reason I couldn't have actually overwritten the current save.

Ironically I'm sure I did this at the same place on my first attempt at playing this game when on the PS3.
