It's incredibly handy, KOTR was only doing 6.6k per hit, partially because I didn't bulk up Clouds magic skills for the battles, but that was still giving me 8k+ HP every turn.

With Ruby, it was W-Summoned KOTR & Hades, as Hades would inflict Stop, which made things ridiculously easy, got attacked 3 times the entire battle, two of them counters with Ulitma, one of which missed, heh.

My battles with Ruby Weapon were so retarded compared to that. Constantly using dazers for paralysis, W-summon/KOTR, Megalixir and never really getting a chain of anything going. A kill's a kill but I'll be sure to go down this route next time instead of spending hours down the left path in the Northern Cave!

I tried as hard as possible to avoid having to work, or master a pile of materia. This way I only needed to cast KOTR & Hades once each. Miming the rest of the time takes no MP either.

Incidentally, I found out fighting Emerald, my KOTR was level one, and I tried to W-Summon it, while the 2nd half failed, when I mimed it, both worked all the time.

EDIT: FWIW, Hades was worse than useless for doing damage, like 170hp a pop,

Never heard of that being possible. Again, amazing the sort of stuff you still find out about this game no matter how many times you've been through it.

Makes me get all nostalgic reading the anticipation up there about the stuff leading up to Atomos and Lindblum. :D Also the stuff with Vivi - those discussions between Vivi and the black mage at the cemetery are some of my favourite bits in all of FF.

Yeah, definitely. It's because they suck you into something so deep with such a likeable character. It's almost adorable and depressing at the same time when Vivi asks about the ones that 'stop moving'. :(

It's strange for such a lighthearted high adventure game to to completely flip and have such deep moments.

Finished 7 early today, KOTR really is a gamebreaker, one-shoting the final boss is mad.

Have Tactics:The War of The Lions downloading now, but might do 6 first.

They really do strike a wonderful balance in 9.

I really, really want to try that out at some point - I started but the controls were extremely annoying on a keyboard. Now that I've got an Xbox 360 receiver thingy I may go for that after Xenoblade.

Never read a bad review about Tactics. Even the 'FF7 iz TotallyY GaY!!11" crowd like it.

Said it before, I'll say it again, even though 7 is my fave, 9 is the perfect JRPG.

I can't stomach keyboard controls at all, even most flash games bug me, as much as I play them.

Hard to argue against Tactics, you wouldn't be playing it if you didn't like tactical rpgs, and it's a perfect example of one.

It's one beautiful game alright. :D I think with 9 the ATE system compensated for what was not as an in-depth or as shocking a story as 7 or 10. It showed that a JRPG needn't have constant plot twists or convolution to be an amazing game. It's just got a quality story with great characters and entertaining dialogue. There's obviously one pretty significant twist towards the end of the third disc (I don't know how I would react now if I didn't know now, but that was immense when I was a child!) but barring that it's mostly a set of events rather than a set of twists and back stories. Despite that, it's still one of the best JRPGs ever.

Keep reading with Tactics that it's got the best soundtrack of all time and one of the best stories, so needless to say that's on the 'to do' list! Does it suffer in any way from having so many characters out of interest? I did wonder whether it'd be a bit Chrono Cross-ish in that regard. I went through that game eventually taking every new character with a pinch of salt, knowing full well that I'd never use them and just sticking to the ones I had to make it easier. I'm guessing with Tactics there would be a lot more variety.

I really loved the ATE's and character swapping, I'd have loved to play more and more as Steiner, his story was another masterpiece inside the masterpiece as a whole.

I've not played a great deal through Tactics tbh, and it was a long time ago, so I don't really know about the story or music, though it is supposed to be one of the deepest. As for having too many characters, not much of an issue I'd imagine, as you'll be using far larger groups. People you have no use for can be deleted too, or perhaps people you don't like. :D You collect monsters too, who can be used in team, and have monster eggs, which must be regularly deleted, so you don't fill up all your roster space. In battle you could have a chocobo on your team, which can then be ridden to increase a stronger characters distance and speed.

Of course, that can be taken with a pinch of salt, as I love Suikoden so, and each of those have 108 characters for your team, all of which have at least a bit of story(a lot with huge chunks of story), and almost all of which have viable in game uses in one kind of battle or another(though you don't have to collect near the 108 or use a lot of them if you don't want to).

Right, cheers for that. I've heard that you can get Cloud which is automatically cool as feck.

Ahhh, Suikoden as well. Dammit. I wish I'd spent all my time at uni going through all these. The only two games I played there were Skyim and Dragon Age, yet that was the best time to go through all these. 'kin hell....would've saved a lot of money going through the Suikoden series I'm guessing!

And I got Eike. The second kid companion. And she has a summon command though she doesn't have any Eidolone at the moment, but the future seems bright. Yipes!

Yeah, she's a beast. She's probably better than Dagger in all instances aside from Yan fights.

She has Cura for a start that is a great thing. I think that she'll have other eidolones from Dagger, though likely the better of them is the one who has better eidolones. Their physical attacks though (and Vivi's) are as bad as physical attacks of mages in FF4. Not a bad thing, you know exactly what you'll need to do with every character.

You'd think that, but Eiko has a bit of a surprise up her sleeve. :D

Eiko is the party member I always have in my teams, pretty much everyone else is expendable.

Dagger has a far better choice of eidolons, but Eiko is very competitive given that she has one of the most powerful damaging summons (if you want to deal damage, you'll realistically only be using the most damaging one) and by far the best buffer, not to mention Carbuncle is cute as hell.. as well as that she is by far a more competent white mage/healer.

Finished second disc. The story is getting better and better. And the game is turning into one of my favorite games of all time. Brilliant 'till now.

Disc 3 is something special.

Like I said, I'm not usually a lover of JRPGs but ff9 strikes a chord with me. The pacing of the plot and tone are perfect for my taste.

There are usually 3 criticisms I hear for the game, a) it's art style- well that's a matter of taste, I think the art style suits the tone of the game, and it's characters brilliantly b) The bad guy- Kuja gets a lot of hate because he's flamboyant- I'm not going to spoil it but he's a really well developed character c) the ending- some people think it goes on too long, but feck them. Seriously. The game is a work of art, savour it.

Is Kuja a reincarnated Saphiroth? Not about his story and I doubt it is as deep as Sephiroth, but him being a cool badass is impossible to not remind me of Sephiroth. Anyway, the game is close to perfect in these two discs, if it becomes even better, then even better for me.

On a side note:

All three of those things are upsides, far as I'm concerned.

Me too

Kuja is like a narcissistic, overly individualistic, super powered Roy Batty, he's brilliant.
Also I'm a massive hopeless romantic so the ending is just my cup of tea [/spoilers]

Yeah, rubbish criticisms. I was trying last night to think of criticisms, coming up with things that would mostly knock 1 point off a rating out of 1000 or something. Said it before I think, but trying extremely hard I came up with merely:

1) Pointless card game. This would hardly be a criticism if Final Fantasy 8 had not existed.
2) A little more repetition of the main theme and Melodies of Life in the soundtrack relative to other FF game equivalents. This is again such a meagre criticism and could never be made if games like FF8 hadn't existed. It is undoubtedly up there with the best video game OSTs.
3) Zidane's steal rate. Annoying, but it's dwarfed by everything positive about the game.

The one possibly legitimate one is:

Necron obviously, but I'm open to the possibility that I missed something whilst younger that I would understand this time round. The best explanation I have now is that Kuja destroyed the crystal with the Ultima spell, and that it wasn't the crystal that would destroy the world but the being that was released as a result. I can't remember whether or not it was clear that the crystal was destroyed though, so I don't know. Still, I took this as a random load of bollocks at the time and it didn't impact my enjoyment of the game one bit.

yeah necron never really gets explained and leaves you to fill in the blanks.

Either way he allows Kuja the chance at redemption, which he takes, and I think that fits well with the tone of the game- So I'll allow this moment of space magic, especially since it doesn't contradict the themes of the game.

1, I hate that card game, but outside of like 5 minutes, you can completely blank it. Zero game impact.
2, I actually didn't even notice that until you said it before.
3, It's not great early on(like most FF's, IMO), but once you have Master Thief and Bandit, I find it's as good as any. Had 9 on today, and against Meltigemmini took me two steals to get both pieces of armour. Usually not *that* easy, but mostly as good as the rest of the games.

This game has the best soundtracks ever. Really.

My top 3 favorites (although there were many other good themes here).

3) Eiko theme:

2) Beatrix theme:

1) Dagger theme:

The feck just happened? Don't tell me that again 'the main villain' is not actually 'the main villain'.

That strange dude in that airship (Garland) destroyed Alexandria (or I think so).

It's nitpicking. :D I only thought it stood out when it got to around Oeilvert, with that being a 'The Place that I'll Return to Someday' too far. There's then at least three more variations of that song after that (Ipsen's castle, the gates, that...other place ;)). Quality soundtrack regardless. Agree up there with Eiko's theme being one of the best - it's not usually one that people think of but it's absolutely joyful. This one once had me leaving the Playstation as it was for hours knowing that you only heard it twice in the whole game:

urgh I hate Ipsen's castle

My last playthrough I forgot all about the trick.. led to me getting frustrated but I guess that was all my own fault

It's the love letter bit in Alexandria. ;) You'll hear it again soon-ish.

Yep, feck Ipsen's Castle. First playthrough of that was a complete nightmare.

Regarding the quote about the best OST, I still can't come to any sort of firm decision as to what the best FF soundtrack is - you could make a strong argument for any of them from 6-10. 6, 7 and 9 are probably the most memorable and melodically catchy throughout, 8's is highly impressive for its consistency, diversity and difference of atmosphere (it strikes me as being in between Chrono Cross and FF), and then 10 has the best quality of sound, perhaps the most diversity (due to the three composers) and in general some of the best music ever made for any game in general. The atmosphere of that game because of the music is incredible, with this being one of the best examples:

I think that sort of ambience and fullness of sound stands out massively from other FF games, and that it's unclear whether something like this is within Uematsu's arsenal. It makes sense that Uematsu would seek help elsewhere for this game (that point about his melodies being more suited to older generations and graphics) and Hamauzu's contributions in particular worked a treat. Still though, the graphics and Uematsu's lesser involvement brings this down slightly in the memorability stakes and ties it with the others.

They're all pretty much identical. 9 is probably the only one that doesn't have a 'famous' FF track, but that's irrelevant because pretty much the entire score is fecking genius. :D

I've got a ship, and for the first time I went to chocobo forest though I haven's started yet the quest.
