One Night Only
Prison Bitch #24604
Only ever played FFX, and I loved it! I think I should probably start from the beginning.
All this talk is making me want to play VIII again.
Oh and Revan, not sure how near the start you are but once Cid gives you the lamp, you use that to get Diablo. At least I think it's a lamp.
Yup, it's a lamp. All this talk is making me want to play VIII again.

Score!I got Quistis, my first level 10 card. Yay!

I never got a great distance into that one, as I had only borrowed a copy. The linearity was a slight niggle, but dang, it was so good it didn't matter. Probably the last proper Final Fantasy, IMO. Didn't like 12 or 13 at all.
Can't wait for the HD remake, just dunno should I get it for the Vita, or PS3, would probably get both if their saves are compatible/transferable.
It's already out...sort of. If you've got a decent laptop, acquire the FFX ISO, load it onto PCSX2, ramp up the D3D resolution scaling to a few times the native setting and voila...FFX with considerably better looking graphics. I tried it on my laptop with Kingdom Hearts and it almost destroyed it, but it looked quality nonetheless. Will definitely be trying that with FFX when I sort a new laptop out, cackling manically at my circumvention of Square-Enix's money-grabbing whilst doing so.
Wish I could forget all of that game and play it again. What a fecking storyline. What a world as well - probably the most original of the series.
I remember reading a variety of posts on some FF forum slagging it off not long ago, with there being a load of talk about how Chrono Trigger, Terranigma etc had far better storylines, music, etc... It was absolute nonsense and it goes to show how much nostalgia clouds judgement. JRPG stories don't come too much better than X's - it'd be absolutely perfect with better voice acting and a slightly better script. What made it so good is that you'd never go anywhere without there being a significant development in the story. It's what made the linearity of it work.
Suikoden III is apparently notoriously difficult to emulate and will suffer FPS drops on occasions no matter what you have. Really fancy playing that at some point, I've never touched the series. Think you can play FFX above native settings with 2.3 dual core and an ok-ish graphics card so it's pretty reasonable compared to other PS2 games.
Still my favourite FF game preciously because of the world. Much prefer those sort of settings to the often dreary world of FFVII or some of the medieval type worlds.
I'll agree that the scripting could have been slightly better(translation issues always seem to be a big problem with games that have voice acting. X-2 seemed to have major problems with it) but I thought the voice acting was, for the most part, top notch, John DiMaggio especially. Yuna's voice actress was the only one who I thought wasn't that great.
The Suikoden series, especially the early ones are probably the only games I'd rate above FF. Only ever played II emulated, only once have I ever seen an actual copy of the game, when it first came out for 30 bucks, 30 bucks I didn't have handy. Never came across the Tactics game or the DS ones either, but they're less important. Wouldn't mind emulation Tactics though!
My attempt at emulating III was game breaking though, more frozen than moving.
Might have to download PCSX2, and try FFX, Suikoden Tactics, and probably another disastrous attempt at III.
It's all personal opinion, of course, but for me everything about I and II were perfect, well, everything that mattered. I is quite short in RPG terms, and the graphics aren't good. Both have translation issues, but most games do IME. Combat is simple really, but not in a bad way. They're not difficult either(I'm never really bothered about difficulty as much as fun, tbh, and FF games are pretty easy too, really). Plenty of options and customizable stuff, especially in II. Music and stories are incredible though, and there's lots of variety between mini games, and the different combats, duels, regular battles and large scale army ones. All the playable characters and different runes and combos and such can keep you busy too.Shit, I had no idea they were that good... Will definitely have to get on that at some point.
Reading up again on Suikoden now, other people are saying they're getting it working with pretty mediocre computers/laptops with certain settings so maybe it isn't that bad after all...

Some useful tips in there for increasing FPS. PCSX2 is actually amazing, I can't bend my head round how people can make something like that. All the hacks and stuff that you can edit work so well to make games playable on laptops below the necessary specifications.

Cheers for that link, seems like it's not going to be as much trouble as it used to be.
I just finished the mission when I had to kidnap Galbaldia's president by switching the train wagons. One of these bosses is in Dollet.
I searched a bit and it says that only having the parts unlock the weapons. So, I am using a guide for that part, just in case I miss a magazine.I think you might need the magazines so you know what weapons there are. If you don't know the weapon then you won't be able to ask for it in the shop i think.

Didn't miss Siren in Dollet (Seed examination).

Nice one, yeah it's Siren. I swear to God, playing FF8 and FF9 the first time round without any sort of guide scarred me RPG wise for years. It's still left its mark now missing some of the GFs in FF8 that time round, but FF9 is the killer. There are genuinely some shite items in 9 that you can only get right at the start of the game that are integral in terms of getting some of the best equipment later on. I physically couldn't play a game after that for ages without rampantly following a guide, checking during each area that I'd not missed anything.
Wanted to say something about the 'Angelo' card you can get on the train in Timber, but it's not really important unless you're obsessive about getting every card earlier on. You can get it again at the end either way, and it's not a card that you'd use at this point over the likes of Quistis, Zell, etc...
I am using a guide, it was very complicated, and while it is possible playing without the guide, I don't want to miss good things.
I got the Angelo card, but modded it into 100 elixirs. It wasn't that a good part to play, knowing that I have Ifrit, Diabolo, Quistis, Seifer and Zell as cards I play with (and all the other cards I could have got till now, except Angelo which I used to get those elixirs).
Aye, they can be awkward about that. 9 was probably the worst, or 12, apparently to get the best weapon you have to not open four specific chests early on, or something equally stupid.Nice one, yeah it's Siren. Probably wise, there are so many different card players and some of the rules of the games mean you won't get their best cards until you play them about 5 times or something. Urghh... the dreaded random rule. Spread that and it adds about 10 hours to your playing time.
You definitely do not need to have the magazines to make the weapons, if you have the parts, they'll show up on the list in shops anyway.

Hardest thing in the game is trying to get towns to abolish that shitty Random rule.
This talk of FF8 is reminding me that Squall was actually a pretty decent lead character despite the stick he gets. Definitely no Cloud, but satisfactorily complex nevertheless. Problem is, I went through Kingdom Hearts last month and they utterly and obliteratively bastardised his character in that game. I don't know how I'm going to take him seriously next time I go through FF8.
Even for a Final Fantasy, the whole game really does go mental in the 2nd half.I absolutely love Squall in the first half of the game. Rinoa ruined him.
Long time since I tried Kingdom Hearts, remember pretty much wanting it just because Cloud and Sephiroth were in it, despite not being a big fan of Action RPG's, need to dig that up sometime.
As for taking him serous, I wouldn't worry, could be fun going through the game just having a laugh.
