What's your favourite single-player FF?

Now you see why I suggest the 2D 4 before 6

As always though, give it time.

Yeah, a think that I must do with FF games. I didn't like FF 7 in the beginning, but after a few hours it became one of my favorite ever games. Just let's hope that 4, 6 and Chrono Trigger will emulate the fun I had when I played 7. Oh, the random battles here are in steroids, probably the thing I hated most in 7, here is even worse

Yup

Don't worry though, it's well worth it. Especially when you get to 6 because it's not as linear as 7, has a much deeper magic system than you realise at first, and is probably the best balanced in regards to the annoying random battles!

Oh and if you don't like that and the mighty Chrono Trigger, than you have problems. ;)

Regarded ad the two best RPG ever, even if I don't like them, I must not say it.

I almost forgot, I read that the American version is a dumped down version of the Japan version. If this is true, am I missing a lot of things?

It's been a while, but I think you could get a rom of the original game with English translation done by fans for the Snes.

As for the dumbing down thing (it was actually that games were made slightly easier, rather than anything removed), I never really knew if that was true or not. I was only young when these games came out, and I did own various Japanese and English versions of games and can't remember thinking one or the other was particularly tough to be honest. It was a rumour that went round about EVERY game though, that the Yanks got easier games.

As for not liking them, it's fine by me to say it! This isn't one of those sites where everyone has to agree on everything (ever looked at some of these dedicated FF gaming sites, or even the playstation/xbox ones? They are definitely the gaming equivalent of Rawk ) We all like different things, and I've said plenty of times that a big part of it does come down to the era you grew up in. Of course, you'd be wrong as on a side-by-side level, 6 is much superior to 7 (which was claimed as dumbed down at the time actually, and in some ways it was ) and Chrono-trigger is up there with the best of the best, but you can say it ;)

Cheers Lambs, you're being very helpful. I am continuing with this though, not going to play over again just to have a little more difficult. Was worried that there are things that are missed here.

Well just try not to rush it. It's easy to overlook the depth actually there if you are just playing to finish it, especially the great story (a first for it's time actually with the themes it covers).

I'm about to look for my cartridge of the 3D remake to try, apparently it really is great and tweaks a few things to bring it up to modern standards, which if true would definitely put it up there with the PSX ones. But obviously I advised you to go with the 2D original to prep you for 6, something which I'm sure gives you the best chance of relaxing and seeing the beauty (and extreme depth) of it.

I need to rent FF XII again. Got about midway and up to a point that I was finding hard as shit. PES also came out right around that time too so most of my gaming time then went on that. Will probably need to start all the way back at the beginning now to remind myself of everything that happened up to that point.

Still waiting to get an entire free week of time to just fire up FFX and finally complete it. My favorite by a distance, must have ran through that about 3 or 4 times without ever completing it. I've still got the save right near the end of the game where you can begin to roam about and start taking on the dark bosses. I remember the first time I ever played the game, not knowing they even existed and running into one of them, proceeding to absolute shit myself

Despite having about two memory cards full of old saves, I'll run through the entire thing from the start again as I enjoy it that much. Yuna

At least all you had to do was hold out for a while in the fights with her, and she did have an amazing theme,

Actually all the variations of that theme are great, the piano collections version especially

I even like this fan made lyrical remix of it,

I'd say 9 is my favourite soundtrack of the lot, Rose of May, You're Not Alone, Gurugu Volcano and all of Kuja's themes.

XII was ok, personally I feel it's got the weakest cast of characters. Balthier and Gabranth are alright but apart from that they're pretty forgettable. Also I would not advise playing it on a large HD TV, so many pixels! The battle system is a marmite thing, I didn't get on with it. You can choose preset attacks that happen under certain criteria (ie use cura when your HP>50%, or use lightning against flying enemies) or you can do it all manually.

I felt the same about the characters, especially coming off the back of X which had the likes of Tidus, Wakka, Rikku but I enjoyed it far more on the second play through. Still not as strong as VII, VIII, and X but probably creeps on IX for me. Soundtrack also gets better when you give it time, some absolute gems on there like Boss Battle, Flash of Blades and Time for Rest. Also has a very good version of the Final Fantasy theme.

I still retain that one of the hardest boss's for me is Ultima Weapon on VIII

Omega Weapon was the one on 8, in my opinion. Just fecks you up as soon as you start the battle if you've not junctioned your shit properly. Then it has an attack that immediately kills a character in one hit...mental battle. 8 needed something like that because the game was far too easy if you knew what you were doing with the system.

It's funny - all the time I've spent in this thread recently singing the praises of FF...I've only just discovered that FF Tactics is meant to be an incredible game and that I've been a massive retard neglecting for all this time. For anyone who's played it, is it true then that it's a contender for best soundtrack and story?

So I've started IX again to see if I'll think more fondly of it on the second play through and just got to Lindblum. Still think Zindane is a cock who thinks he's a ladies man but I forgot how good a character Vivi is and his whole story within the game. Probably the most likeable character in any FF.

I am liking the game at the moment very much, though it is not as good as FF7. I am not rushing it at all, getting all the treasures, talking with everyone and getting all the best weapons.

About the characters, the twins had potential but they were killed very early which was a shame. If they were available as long as Aeris in seven their death would have been a lot more emotional. Not liking that much the others expect Rydia (now grown Rydia). At the moment I am at the tower of Bab-il.

Good advice you gave me to play this.

Just twatted Seymour Flux. The fights in FFX seem way easier than I remember.

Decided to start IX seeing has I had only played it briefly once before. Thoroughly enjoying it so far, I'm enjoying the more 'cartoonish' feel to the game and I'm liking the look of the levelling up system. All the characters seem great too, I hope we get to see Blank at some point again. Steiner seems like a bit of a gimp so far aswell.

The most frustrating thing about that game was trying to capture Tonberries, mainly because they never friggin appeared. I once spent literally about 7 hours fighting in that stupid cave and didn't even come across one, let alone the 10 I needed.

But ye the battles are fairly easy, other than a few of the Dark Aeons.

Its such a great game. I thought the levelling system and the way characters learned abilities was excellent.

There are lots of memorable locations too

Is that the monster capturing side quest? I didn't start that yet. Seemed too much like grinding, which I'm not a huge fan of.
Don't think I've heard of Dark Aeons yet but all aeon battles so far have been pretty easy.
As soon as you realise you need to build up your characters' and aeons' overdrives and save them for the bosses your going to have a good time. In that sense IX frustrated me because you rarely had the time to use the trances because they got triggered in random encounters. Looking back now it does seem like being able to save overdrives might be a bit too easy.

Yep, I thought the ability learning was good as well. And the soundtrack is one of those that I'll instantly recognise if I here it.

I've just defeated Yunalesca in FFX.

Don't really know what to do now. I was really enjoying just strolling through the story, listening to some great music. I'm now at the end and I'm not sure I can be arsed with many of the sidequests. Too much of a grind some of them.

I also don't want to finish the game. I've enjoyed it immensely

Ye it's the capture side quest. It can be a bit of a ballache at times, but the resulting monsters that are created and the discovering of the right tactics to beat them, along with some really great items that are key to levelling your characters make it the best side quest in any FF IMO. There's something deeply satisfying about getting absolutely shit on by a monster and then figuring out how to beat them (feck walkthroughs!).

9's soundtrack really is great aswell so far. I'm thankful to YouTube that I can now listen to any soundtrack whenever I please. I'm pretty sure I won't have been the only one to deliberately lengthen certain battles/parts of the game to listen to more of the soundtrack you enjoyed :)

I better try it out if it is so good then :)

I would have thought you'd have played IX before, it's a good 'un. I've started playing through it again on a save I started a while back, it's just at the start of the second disc. 9's soundtrack is tip top and the part where You're Not Alone plays is my favourite of the game.

Good luck getting Excalibur 2 (Steiner's ultimate weapon) and beating Ozma!

Nah I never got around to it. When I was younger my brother wouldn't buy it cos he said it was crap! And before it got released on PSN I found it too pricey. I've had it downloaded for a while, just never got around to it.

I love a good challenge so I'll look forward to that!

Personally playing through XII right now. I've completed (As much as i'd like to for now) my saves on 7/8/9/10, and now onto XII.

Probably one of the most hated but i enjoy it. It's different, which i think was needed and they pulled it off well imo. They should have stuck with this 'system' in XII and XII-2.

Think the beauty of triple triad was how well it worked with the item/magic refining and junctioning system. You could easily spend hours just at the start of that game in Balamb and in the Garden converting cards and getting quality items/spells.

Tetra Master:

Was devastating how pointless it was, ultimately. I loved playing it and you had the tournament obviously but they should've worked in a more consistent reward system. It was well out of sync with the rest of the game, I thought; getting a new weapon, ability, trance, accessory, etc on 9 made you feel like an absolute boss. With Tetra Master, the most you get out of that is a single accessory (Rebirth Ring? Admittedly quite good from what I remember) if you win.

I think FF9 was probably the FF game that got that most spot on barring that point. Loved it, fantastic game.

Ok not quite Final Fantasy but it's still a square game.

So I finally want to get through chrono trigger after starting it so many times. I started the snes version and just got back to my own time after the first part. However I just found out the PS version has FMV sequences. Is it worth me starting again just for that or should I carry on with the Snes version?

Finished FF IV, a good game but not one of the best I have ever played. The final battle was excellent though, every move had to be planned. And the twins got revived though it didn't feel that natural.

Now, it's the time for FF VI, and after it Chrono Trigger. If these games are not the best ever, I'm not gonna be that happy.
