Ye, I've only just hit chapter 3 and unlocked the ability to use Paradigms and the Crystarium, but I'm just not 'feeling' it, if you get me. VII, VIII, X and to an extent XII I was hooked by, but this I just find, well, quite boring to be honest. The linear aspect really does annoy me.

I will stick with it, however, for you.

Visually it is stunning mind.

I wil admit the first bit is a little sluggish. I'm up to the end of chapter 7 now (about 13 hours), still have no choice of the combatants but i don't mind that as it's keeping the story ticking over (and as Weaste said it's still laying the foundations at the moment it seems).

It's much more of an action style game though, rather than a classic JRPG.

havent played it myself yet but my girlfriend got it on tuesday and it seems pretty good. I always enjoy the customisation options like the Crystarium and Paradigm shifting - the linearity of it so far i find a bit boring, hoping that opens up soon though, and having no choice yet over party members doesnt help either since it seems that Lightning is about 5x as good as anyone else.

One thing it could really use is more, and deeper "branches" in the Crystarium - so you actually have to make choices rather than pretty much just progressing one role along a steady path, maybe with the odd one or two extra stats/abilities on the side.

Hate to break it to you but you don't get any other branches on the Crystarium. You just build up each "job" until it's maxed out, and if you fight every enemy around you'll have a nearly full crystarium just before every boss fight.

And i know what you mean about Lightning, she's insanely good, and sadly it doesn't open up to let you choose your party for a while at least. I heard chapter 11 is where it happens so i've still got a ways to go.

I've not been let down by this, after seeing all the videos and what not before this came out it's what i expected. A linear, action packed, visually magnificent game.

Star Ocean had it's disc swapping problems as well near the end which were annoying. Anyone here playing it on the 360? I'd be interested to know at what point you have to swap the discs.

According to a review i read, chapter 11 is the only open chapter in the game. 12 and 13 are back to linear to fight the final boss.

There's meant to be some side missions and the like in 11 so i look forward to getting to that.

I'll say this for it though, once it got going and i had access to the crystarium and paradigms i've had a hard time putting it down, the battles are fun and require some tactical nouse, and the story runs along at a fine pace with the visuals really dragging you in.

Got to give a huge nod to the voice actors as well.

Opening scene best thing I've ever seen to be honest.

I'm only on chapter 3 as not a gaming nerd and have played it very little so far as not had chance been busy etc.

It just seems to be it's fight, run a few yards, cut scene, cut scene, run a few yards, fight, cut scene.

Don't get me wrong I love the cut scenes but there's no running around for ages etc and exploring.

It's like Devil May Cry. Except Devil May Cry was much better and much more fun.

It's just not a Final Fantasy for me, no exploring, no interaction with other characters, no ability to use other characters in battle. Bugger it!

I am going to stick with it purely because it's Final Fantasy and Square, but I'm disappointed. Let's hope Versus is better.

I'll agree it's not a regular Final Fantasy, but that doesn't bother me too much. It still has a strong story and the battles are fun and quite tactical once you get further in.

I don't know why you're disappointed when we've known for months it was going to be like this!

As I said I'm going to stick with it. I'm not that far in so perhaps I'm being slightly harsh.

Will continue with it tonight and power through.

Thats why i did not buy it.

it may be a bit boring but i will repeat it. if you want exploring , interaction and etc go for WKC.

Just arrived home with it, £34.71 from asda which wasn't bad.

If i'm disappointed I want my money back, Elvis.

I'd have got a 10% discount :p

And perhaps I was too quick to judge this game. Now the Paradigms and Crystariums have been unlocked and you can start building your characters, it's starting to get much better. Plus I love boss battles, they're brilliant.

Just got the Shiva Eidoloth, fecked up the first time as all I did was attack her and the bar wouldn't fill. Second time round I figured out what to do.

The cut-scene afterwards

So yes, I'm revising my opinion. It's getting better!

There we go Elvis, we've been telling ya to give it time. The paradigms really change the feel of the game and getting to grips with the tactical aspect of them is vital for later on, i've been killed a few times now by just normal run of the mill enemies through bad paradigm choices.

There's another brilliant cut-scene involving Shiva later just to give you something to look forward to.

How are you using the Crystarium? Are you levelling characters up so they are a Jack of all Trades and master of none, or vice versa?

I'm unsure what to do.

If you fight every available monster in each chapter you will be able to level them all to their max just before the end of each area.

I built up the main one for each guy first (Commando for Lightning, Ravenger for Vanille etc.) but after that unless you want to save your points for later to bulk up one branch you might as well give everyone everything you can, it'll give you more variety and an easier ride later on.

Not disappointed so far, it's different to what I like from my Final Fantasy games but enjoyable nonetheless.

Visually, it's excellent as you'd expect. And the story has started off strongly. Hoping for a bit more variation in the combat system soon, though I'm sure it won't be long.

All this talk of paradigms etc in this thread is confusing as feck atm.

How shite is this on XBox? I like Final Fantasy but I'm not buying a PS3 just to play it, and don't want to buy the Xbox version if it's just a crappy immitation.

Only about two hours in. It's fairly immense, even though the fighting is very often. But it's enjoyable if a little repetitive beginning - although it's immersive and has a decent storyline at the moment.

Just gotten to chapter 4 and would give it a 7/10 so far. I hope they kill Vanille off before the end. And Hope.
