Theres 4 limit break levels for each character, they all have 2 limits in each level except for the 4th level which is just one. You start with the 1 limit for each character, use that limit about 8-10 times and you'll get the second limit for that level, to unlock a new level you have to kill a certain number of enemies with each character.

So for example Tifa's first limit is Beat Rush, use that 8ish times and you'll unlock Somersault. Kill 70-80 enemies with Tifa and you'll unlock her level 2 limit break (use that one 8ish times and you'll get the second limit in level 2), kill another 70-80 with her and you'll get level 3 etc.

Ahhh, i get it. Makes sense. I'm level 17 atm, most of my party members are between 14 - 16 and i just got to the chocobo farm. Am i at a decent level at the moment? One thing that annoyed when i played X, is that far later in the game, i had to spend hours levelling up to be a couple of the last bosses.

I have rarely had to level up for some perticular boss, I try not to escape from any fight while I play, and that is enough in most cases...of course there are some exceptions but basically don't run, fight every battle and you should be good...

I love the first disc, seems to last forever. I remember leaving Midgar and seeing this huge world map for the first time and being blown away. I think you visit every town but one on the first disc, i need to play this again sometime.

I haven't run from any fights yet thankfully, which seems to work. Pretty much because i didn't know how to

My set up atm is Cloud, Tifa and Yuffie (Who i decided to get using the tip posted here! Quite easy to get actually.) I'm using Tifa for healing and reviving mainly, but still decent for attacking because of her limit break and a few bits of magic. I've then give Yuffie all the summon materia, i dunno if this is wise but i assume it would be best if all the summons were given to one person?

Anyway, just got to Costa Del Sol (which looks hilarious for some reason.) Haven't really figured out what i'm doing here yet, pretty much talked to everyone, and even had to go out and save on the world map 'cos i couldn't find a save point.

Probably best to share the summons around mate. That way if needed you can just dump three in a row at them. Costa Del Sol is hilarious, just make sure to come back when you have a bunch of money to buy your holiday home!

Theres not much to do in Costa Del Sol, its just a port to let you go back and fourth between the two continents, but there is a house there you can buy for loads of gill where you'll be able to rest for free once you own it, thats a lot further in the game though before you could afford it.

As for summons I tend to spread them equally between characters just so if anyone dies I've always got access to other summons. Theres no right way to do it though, thats the great thing about the materia system you can customise however you want.

(Edit: Ha, beaten on both counts!)

Right I am about to go through this game again (VII) for the first time in 11 years.

First time through I did EVERYTHING, I also happened to be 11 years old, untouched by Alcohol and cigs, amongst other things.

Needless to say outside the basic plot outline I have forgotten everything.

My question to you is. Where are the best places to level up early on (I want Areis 4th limit break, the only thing i haven't done) and What weapons and armous are best for growing materia quickly ?

Am loving my replay through this.

Won the Chocobo Race and got the buggy and then went back to Junon and set off the alarm near the elevator to the underwater reactor, and have been levelling up there. Upto level 36 with Cloud, Barret and Red XIII now and am about 2000AP off Bolt3, Ice3 and Fire3. About 1000AP off Regen too. Never been this highly levelled so early on in the game before, it's kinda

Stobzilla, best way to get Aeris' 4th limit would be to do this (This is how I got it a few years back):

1. Obviously you start off with Healing Wind. Use a hyper on her and make sure she is always in a 'Fury' state, so her limit bar fills quicker.
2. Once you get the Cover materia, equip that on her so she starts to take more damage than she normally would, by covering for other party members.
3. Simply keep doing this until you have used the limit 8 times, and you unlock Seal Evil.
4. Now let Aeris strike the finishing blow in every battle, and she'll have soon killed 80 enemies. Once you get the Enemy Skill materia, equip it to Aeris and learn Matra Magic, and have her cast it to kill off battles which have multiple enemies. You'll have Breath of Earth soon enough.

Now, once you get past the Cave across from the Chocobo Ranch, go and fight in the forests. You will either fight 3 birds or 5 small things, but it is easy to gain your limit breaks as they do quite a bit of damage. Just simply repeat the steps above with Aeris and you'll have her 6th limit break in no time (Then you have to get the Mythril to get the Great Gospel).

The whole process, if done right, will take about 90 minutes.

Best armour to use to level up materia doesn't really matter, as most of them early in the game don't offer double or triple AP.

Best advice I can give is wait until you are on Disc 3 and then fight the Magic Pots, you get a shitload of AP from them and if you spend a couple of hours down there you can master a shitload of materia. Took me about 3 hours if I remember correctly to master the 21 green materia 2 times over so I could get the 2 Master Materia from the Huge Materia's which you store at Cosmo Canyon.

It's like an erection in the morning, confusing, yet comfortably familiar.

That is to say, it's all coming back to me now.

Are they going to be rolling them all out?

If the ESRB is to be believed, then Final Fantasy VII might have been the first Square Enix game to hit the Playstation Network, but it certainly won’t be the last.

I wouldn't get your hopes up, Tactics have been on the Japanese PSN store for ages now its finally getting released everywhere else. VIII and IX would be on the Japanese store long before ours and theres no sign of either yet. Would like to play through VIII again on PSP though, been having a blast with VII.

Just beat Emerald Weapon using only Cloud. Been grinding in the Northern Cave against the Magic Pots to master all the materia, hasn't really taken long, once I had two Knights of Round materia I soloed Emerald with this set-up:

Weapon: Ultimate Weapon
Materia: Underwater, HP Absorb-Knights of Round

Armour: Mystile
Materia: Counter-Mime, MP Absorb-Knights of Round, HP Plus

I don't think there was was any way I could lose actually so its not much of an achievement, using KoR would refill my HP and MP to full and any attack Emerald did would be countered with Mime. I'll see if the same set-up works on Ruby, I always thought that was the more difficult fight.

Looks like a pretty undefeatable set up there!

Though has anybody else on here ever defeated it without KOTR? I think I'm the only one.

Nah I haven't beat either without Knights of Round. I made a seperate save just before it so I might go back and try, I could probably use a similar set-up with Counter-Mime if I start with an Omnislash but I don't know how I would heal. Maybe Quad-Magic-Comet, HP Absorb-Comet. Then just use Comet 2 between limits.

Edit: Just gave that a quick test and I doubt it would work, don't get enough health back through HP Absorb-Comet. Maybe Ultima or Gravity would be better.

Edit 2: I spoke to soon  I let the fight continue and I beat him in the end, the Comet idea was pretty stupid but it worked in the end using a lot of Elixar's mimed in between Comets and Omnislash. So there you go, I have beat Emerald without KotR.

I think it is, generally because you can only use a single character anyway, but your character looks a bit unbeatable!

You don't have to use a single character against Ruby Weapon if you kll off two of your characters before the fight. If you do this, he sticks his claws in the ground as soon as the fight begins.

I also went up against Emerald Weapon again the other day - it's a fantastic fight! Had mastered Final Attack and Phoenix with HP > MP on each character so it wasn't really possible to lose. No knights of the round, just lots of demi, 4 x cut and limits breaks. :D

Kicked Ruby's arse now too! Same set-up as Emerald except I needed Elemental-Fire as well (I tried Elemental-Ultima but that didn't work).

Finished the Battle Arena and got W-Summon and Final Attack too. I think the only thing I have left to do is get all the Enemy Skills.

So... You do fight with a single character, it's been a few years since I played it but as far as I know if you revive your characters it blows them away again no?

If you kill the characters before fighting it, you can revive them in battle after he sticks his claws in the ground. He sometimes dismisses them later on in the fight if you don't kill him quick enough, though.

Oh right, from what I remembered he's just blow them away straight away once they are revived.

I used to kill them before the fight so that I'd be fighting with Cloud and not one of the other two.

Nice numbers!

Damn. Another reason for me to buy a PS3.

I have VIII and XII here at home. Finished VIII one summer holidays and am stuck at some point in XII.

Or you could just wait until the XB360 version is finished like us non Japanese PS3 owning chumps. Whenever that may be.

What if you don't have a 360 to begin with?

I've got this here laptop and a PS2 which currently resides in my brothers room becauzse he's found more time to play it than myself.

I haven't played it in so long Xander so I can't tell you with a great degree of certainty.

I do remember it being somewhere in the desert, though. Enemy territory (maybe?)

TBH i haven't played it for a while either! If i remember the desert area is quite early on, before you get the dawn shard, when you have to fight some big glowing bird.

I can't think of any desert areas you go in after that. Well actually there is a bit after you get out of a prison or something and you're dropped off back in a desert, near a river. This is all very vague and in no way helpful i'm afraid.
