The F1 Thread 2012 Season

Perez is surely the next big thing. Another great race by him.

I don't know why but i can't help but want Kobayashi to do much better than him. Kudos to Perez though, it's like he knows if he comfortably outperforms Koba he will get a better drive (possibly Ferrari).

Best race of the season so far and I think this will be a spur Lewis needs, can see him winning a few races now.

Naa. We still have around 10-12 drivers left to win races before we can start thinking of anyone winning a second.

I think we're all agreeing but to different degrees

Personally, I think that if you factor out Hamilton's drive and how it forced Alonso and Vettel's hand, McLaren didn't do themselves much credit tactically. Something that they showed when they told him the others wouldn't one-stop, they seem completely unable to read the tactics of other teams or put together a progressive plan themselves.

They told him they wouldn't 1 stop because all their data was likely telling them that 2 stopping was the far quicker strategy, and they didn't think the other teams would be stupid enough to try the single stop. Alonso's result tells you that they were correct.

Never heard of him till this season, he is really a very good driver, can see him winning a race very soon
He is a good driver. Proved one stop could work for this track.

Disagree about McLaren fecking up. They won this race with sound tactics. They waited enough and pitted hamilton so that he had enough laps to cover up.
Tbh I was surprised Ferrari didn't pit at all with the nature of these tyres. Thought they were waiting it out for Vettel so as to not allow him to go with 1 stop.
In the end it was Grosjean who managed to do it. proved a point there.

Agree that McLaren got their tactics right, the two stop was clearly the right move and Ferrari and Red Bull screwed up.

Very, very good drive from Hamilton, he looked back on top of his game. Hopefully he doesn't keep it up :p

Very weird from Ferrari. Usually Alonso is the type who'll try and get the maximum result and won't really gamble.

He may live to rue those 8 points dropped.

Also WTF is going on with Jenson? They say he can keep his tyres and Lewis can't. Yeah right!

Very pleased for Lewis. He's definitely back to his best for me.

Perez is a fecking star.

Lovely GP2 reunion on the podium, I think the strategy was spot on by McLaren. Red Bull and Ferrari had only a lap or so to stick or twist, it's a short lap too. Ferrari froze at the end there.

I don't know what's going on with Button but it's something more fundamental than tyre management in my opinion. He's got a real problem with the car at the moment, he just can't sync with it at all.

Can't be tyres, it's something else. He's only got 2 points since China.

Brilliant race. Thought McLaren had thrown it away when they stopped but the drop off at the end was insane. Was abit surprised they didn't put Lewis on a pair of Super Softs, Wasn't Perez catching at like 3-4 secs a lap?

Three people I felt sorry for this race:

Di Resta - What a moronic strategy, lad needs to move to a better team, has got the talent.
Alonso - Same as Di Resta except Ferrari need to keep him at all costs.
Button - What the HELL is going on? The guy looks more depressed than Hamilton last season and that's saying something.

Button's issue are very odd, for the first 3 races he was fine and actually beat Lewis fair and square at Australia but since then he has been nothing short of useless if you compare him with his team mate who despite numerous cockups from his team has regularly been on the pace and in the good points places.

I think his biggest issue at Canada was a lack of track time on a different suspension config, recipe for poor pace really and there isn't much he can do about that when for most of FP his car was sitting in bits. But he's just been off the pace and in general not really being very "Buttonish" on his tyres, he only got 20 laps out of his Soft's yesterday.

Back to the drawing board and quickly I think, McLaren need Button to start taking points off the others for the Constructors and lets face it if he doesn't turn it around quickly he will be supporting Hamilton rather than racing him.

what a great weekend - the city , the people , the food and the race. my first but not last time to montreal. i'd live there if i could.

What do we think of the news that Vettel's potentially joining Ferrari in 2014?

Assuming all the contract talk is true, Massa's is up at the end of this season and Vettel joins a season later. Who will take the reigns for a year?

All depends on Alonso. Alonso has said in the past that he would quit after a 3rd world title and its entirely feasible he will win one soon.

Doubt Alonso would be too happy having Vettel as a teammate though.

This weekends race could be anyones, no one team looks as though they have the march on any other.

Wonder how long it takes this weekend for Button to start moaning about the balance of the car.

This is as competitive as it gets right here, 2 tenths from pole to 12th. Crazy.

Ben Edwards just creamed his pants I think...

Qualy is mental. Alonso was 2 tenths slower than Rosberg and ended up 11th while Rosberg was 2nd.

The Red Bull in Vettel's hands has always been a great quali car, credit to both of them.
