The F1 Thread 2012 Season

Idk. It all has the feeling of being 'artificial'. But what we have now is still a little better than the days when you could literally spend the whole race behind a car and have no hope of getting close enough to overtaking because of the dirty air. Drivers would just wait for pitstops. It was all a bit boring.

I think ultimately the problem is that we have too many boring tracks. Even before the days of DRS etc. places like SPA, Interlagos,Canada, Monza and Monaco produced good races because of the challenging nature of the tracks. Nowadays we have too many Tilke designed snoozefests.

Oh absolutely, the tilkedromes definitely add to the issue. Bernie gets paid though, so it's all good.

Speaking about the negative media attention, Ecclestone added: "I think it's good because people talk about things, you know. You know what they say - there is no such thing as bad publicity."

He's so out of touch. The man lives in a cocoon. :wenger:

Europe clinging on to its F1 venues

There has been some movement in the future shape of the F1 calendar with confirmation from Bernie Ecclestone that from next year onwards Valencia and Barcelona will share a slot. And at the same time he said that a deal has been concluded for France to return to the schedule, in a deal alternating with the Belgian Grand Prix at Spa.

“The deal is done,” said Ecclestone. “We agreed the financial terms last Tuesday with the minster of sport, David Douillet. As soon as France is ready, we will sign.”

The sign off for the French Grand Prix is clearly waiting for the French presidential election to be concluded, as is usually the way. It looks quite possible that there could be a new administration in France. Although everyone is working on the assumption that the French race will take place at Paul Ricard in the South of France, paddock sources suggested to me at the weekend not to discount a possible switch and a return to Magny Cours, which hosted the race from 1991 to 2008.

Apparently Paul Ricard, owned by Ecclestone, is not a straightforward proposition as the access roads are not good for a large crowd and there are no grandstands, so temporary ones would have to be erected. There are likely to be political considerations as well, depending on the outcome of the election.

With a French president of the FIA, who is due to face a re-election himself in 18 months time, the French have been making serious efforts to regain their place on the calendar, the French GP not having taken place since 2008. Magny Cours dropped off because of local government finance reasons primarily. The circuit is up to current F1 standards and always provided great racing.

Its return would give Michael Schumacher something to smile about; he won eight times at Magny Cours.

Europe is clinging to its F1 venues, with the financial crisis in the Eurozone set to continue and intensify in the next few years, while there are new venues further afield willing to pay higher sanctioning fees.

Mexico is likely to put a deal together soon, with telecoms billionaire Carlos Slim currently pushing Sergio Perez. If Perez gets into a Ferrari in the near future you can be sure that a Mexican Grand Prix won’t be too far behind. Argentina is pushing hard for a return, while Russia is already scheduled for 2014, New Jersey will have a slot in 2013, probably in June, to tie in with Montreal.

This will leave just seven events; Britain, Monaco, Italy, Spain, Germany, France/Belgium and Hungary as the only European races on a 20 race calendar.

Keep on digging Bernie, we only get the best track on the calender once every 2 years.

feck off Bernie, you fecking little troll bastard, I hate you and everything you stand for.

nnnnnnoooooooo!!!!!! :( :(

Spa is probably the best one out of all of them. It's only going to make people stop watching the sport if anything. Bad move.

If it is true then really they have every right to leave, Mercedes have had a huge impact on Formula 1. Yeah their team is relatively new namewise but that base has been in F1 since Tyrell and thats before we even talk about their hugely successful engine supply before becoming a team.

If Red Bull get a seat at the board then practically anyone can get one in my book.

In other news McLaren tested a new raised nose and its still an elegant solution compared to the step noses.

Martin Brundle just tweeted this - Mercedes announce 2013 sponsor, clearly not leaving F1. Last volume manufacturer in F1, supply quarter of F1 grid engines. Crazy to lose them.

Alonso on top during practise 1, going to have a look at practise 2 and see what news is knocking around the paddock for the weekend.

McLaren running this new nose design and it still looks fantastic compared to the rest

Some interesting bits and pieces going around, the new front nose on the Mclaren causing too much understeer, they may need to revert to the old nose. Vettel has chosen to run a completely different exhaust package to Webber again for the FP sessions, whether he will keep it or not who knows, Button on the radio saying there is, "unbelievable understeer" something clearly not right at all.

McLaren look strong on race pace, I mean fuel loads are unknown but Button was banging in 30's consistently with Red Bull, Lotus & Mercedes in the 31's.

FP3 might be pretty interesting today I think, will Vettel continue to run a different exhaust package to Webber? Mclaren turned around their issues with the nose and balance in FP2, will they continue to be strong from the start in FP3? Most of the teams if not all of them are complaining that the harder tyre causes the car to lose balance, how big of an issue will that be for the race?

For quali I am thinking that the Mclarens are going to lock out the front row if they continue as they finished yesterday.

1. Button (he was flying on the soft compound yesterday)
2. Hamilton
3. Vettel

Jesus Ben Edwards was a dreadful choice of commentator from the BBC, 5th race and he is still making rookie mistakes and still talking over the team radios. He is so horrifically shit.

Yea I just turned over to sky because of him

Quite a few of the top runners gone onto softs, saving hard tyres for the race.

Don't get why McLaren used the Hards if they were going to go onto the Softs again, that time was fine on the Hards. Jenson has struggled on the hards all weekend anyway.

Senna goes off onto the gravel, and Ben Edwards sounds like he just jizzed his pants in excitement

Mclaren really flying at the moment, looking good for them, button still struggling with the rear of the car.

feck, Button really not happy there, "oversteer one minute understeer the next....work that one out" to his race engineer on the radio.
