The F1 Thread 2012 Season

If it's dry this is a good track to find out who has aero dominance. I'm half expecting the Ferrari to look shocking, Alonso could hussle it around Melbourne but its all about high speed downforce here.

Probably just waiting to see how Perez progresses through his second season as i think he's most likely their long term future plan.

One thing that upsets me is that i don't think Kobayashi will ever get a chance in a top team as he doesn't have the links like other drivers do.

For anybody that can get it , Senna has just started on Sky Atlantic .
A must for all F1 fans

Film fans in general really, amazing piece of work.

McLaren seem confident here but I still can't quite believe that Red Bull have lost their downforce dominance so quickly, reckon they'll be right back in it.

McLaren will be confident because of their engine and the two straights at the end and beginning of the lap, it's why I think it will if dry in qualifying be the McLarens and Mercedes in the top four

You only have to look to last season and see how close it was in qualifying compared with Aus the round before, and that was down to the nature of the track....I think the gap between the two teams will be bigger, with Mercedes again in between them

Not sure about Lotus

Aye, reckon McLaren & Mercedes will be very strong this weekend.

I've updated the OP as well, will try and keep on top of it through the season.

The straights are rarely enough for a team to win the race though, need a lot of downforce for that middle sector, and that's where McLaren are indicating that they're very confident. Will be interesting to see how that plays out, haven't seen a McLaren leading the way in the aero department for a fair while.

That and McLaren's straightline speed is actually not far off Mercedes even with their tricky DRS. That's why I believe McLaren and Mercedes will lockout the front two rows for quali, barring a Vettel flier but in the race it will be Red Bull vs McLaren and probably a very close one.

I don't know

If the Mercedes get in between the Red Bulls and McLarens, as I expect them to do, then it's going to be tough for the Red Bulls to get past them, and imo the McLarens will fly off into the distance before the first pits stops, and then that will release the Red Bulls

But by then, the damage will be done, unless rain/safety car

Yeah your probably right about that, I always expect a Red Bull to find a way through though because im a cynical McLaren fan. If Schumacher can not have his car shit its pants this time out though.

As long as Jenson continues to finish above Lewis I'll be happy enough. Don't see anything but a McLaren domination this season, unfortunately. I guess I can cross my fingers for a 2005 style showing, fast but a time bomb, but don't see it happening.

Lewis needs to find a way to take less out of his tyres, otherwise Jenson will take him down most weeks, no use being so much quicker in qualifying if it only gets you one place higher

EDIT
That or quicker rivals, to get in between him and Jenson

All the cars are practically bullet proof these days which is actually annoying, part of the beauty of F1 used to be waiting/wishing on an engine going pop.

Am I right in saying harder compounds for this race too isn't it? But the track itself is a heavy wear circuit so it kinda evens itself out.

Hard & Medium are the two options this weekend, yea.

I agree about the bullet proof engines, it's one of the detrimental side affects of cost cutting and restricting the number they can use in a season, they operate much further from the stress limits.

Yeah and as Colin Chapman once said the perfect racing car would fall to pieces as soon as it crossed the finish line to win a race.

The cost cutting had to happen and I don't necessarily think having great reliability is a bad thing its just that era of racing had a certain charm about it, I don't think we will see those days again with advancing technology and control measures, the most we get these days is an old engine expiring in FP or some KERS not working.

Rain forcast again this weekend I see, might be another one where we don't see true dry running pace through lack of setup tweaking.

Hope it's not too bad, wet races are fun but I don't want to have to make do with Kimi grabbing a diet coke and a magnum again!

It's still quite likely given they don't start until 5pm local time, I don't know why they haven't knocked it back an hour yet really, well I do its for the European TV audiences but if your getting up at 6am to watch then 5am isn't much worse is it.

Brundle interviewing Pic whilst he sits in the car with his helmet on

Let's see all these complaints next year, the team are learning on the job, Sky are very good when it comes to sports coverage. And will constantly be tweaking this season.
