The F1 Thread 2012 Season

You have any evidence for that, or are you plucking those accusations out of your arse in order to further a particular agenda?

There are plenty on these boards who can't stand Lewis Hamilton. I'm sure there are others who dislike Button; there are certainly a good number who dislike McLaren.

And besides which, I'm not entirely sure of your point? It's already been clearly acknowledged that people who are fans of a particular person / team will enjoy their dominance; it's everyone else who will find it boring and start to resent them. For feck's sake, this is a Manchester United forum. You don't get much more dominant than that, and yet we all revel in it. And that's because we're the ones benefitting from that dominance. United fans weren't so giddy when Liverpool were winning everything in sight, but that's the nature of being a fan.

For everyone else, though, it's fecking dull. So Hamilton's fans, or Button's fans, would love watching them win. Everyone else (including the casual viewers), would find it boring, because it would be.

Next time you waltz in with some fantastic one-liner in order to dismiss the concerns of the doubters, you might want to make sure it actually makes sense.

Next time you want to act the big man and bore people with a rant actually take into consideration "was he aiming this at me or am I just a bit paranoid and insecure?" Wasn't trying to dismiss anyone's concerns, was simply stating my opinion that if Hamilton or Button (mostly Hamilton) was this dominant nobody would be giving a feck. Yes, they'd say it was just as boring because it would be, but there certainly wouldn't be comments like "English cnut" like has been aimed at Vettel ("German cnut"). Clearly there's a hatred for Vettel in this thread and from certain posters that is unhealthy and unwarranted simply because he's got a better car than anyone else.

Last season was a lot worse than this season in terms of sheer dominance. Red Bull and Vettel have just found something at the perfect time and it's galling for some because they'd pinned all their hopes on Vettel not winning the title only for him to come through and snatch it towards the end of the season (probably).

But anyway, I hadn't even read any of your posts in here before I posted so get off the high horse and definitely take a chill pill.

Perhaps it's both? Don't forget this is a guy who almost won the World Championship, so he's hardly terrible. And Ferrari have confirmed him for next year, which would suggest they don't think they could get anyone better - so he can't be terrible, else he'd be out the door.

It's just that Alonso is that good.

Theyve confirmed Massa for next year purely because its widely expected that Vettel is going to be joining ferrari in 2014, i dont think theres any top drivers on the grid who would sign for ferrari for just the year knowing whats happening at the end of the season, they could always put a young driver in there for the year but they then run the risk of the driver performing well and the fans taking a liking to him and possibly having the problem of potentially pissing off some fans by cutting a young driver to bring in Vettel, my other halfs family are italian and big big ferrari fans and they already dont like the idea of Vettel coming in because they love Alonso and they feel he should be no. 1

Massa staying put for the year is the easiest option, he knows the team, he wont rock the boat when asked to move over for Alonso or to work for the team and then at the end of the year will be happy to walk away after keeping Vettels seat warm for him

Raikkonen staying at Lotus for next year.

He must feel that the car is capable of being better than it's shown this year. Or, at least, that the team can keep up the development pace, because it was a good car at the start of the year but then got left behind as the season wore on.

Either that, or no one else will have him.

Edit: Seems I misread the contract situation - it was always a two-year deal, but he had to satisfy certain performance clauses for the second year to activate. I guess third in the WDC is good enough for that!

Expected, it was Lotus or a midfield team once McLaren signed Perez anyway.

I've always thought allowing unlimited upgrades during the season is stupid. Perhaps they should limit it, maybe even more so depending on where you finished the season before to level things up a little.

Or maybe I'm talking bollocks. But as a fan (but maybe not as into it as some), the start of the season was a lot more fun than it is now, and where I once had to watch every race, lately I'm not as bothered.

I'm not sure I agree that they should limit upgrades, F1 should always be pushing technology and allowing them to constantly develop is important to maintain that. But they need to shit or get off the pot with the restrictions, either enforce them heavily or don't have them at all.

It's a bit silly that some teams are in a resource restriction agreement and others operate outside of it. Not to pick on them but they are the team to beat, Red Bull spent £60+ million more than the likes of Mercedes and Lotus last season (its hard to quantify exact figures given Red Bull operate in two entities).

Bernie talks about budget caps but that won't happen, but in my opinion they could quite easily enforce a luxury tax. If teams want to spend ludicrous amounts then fine, let them but for any £1 spent over a certain amount they have to pay a tax that filters to the smaller budget teams or they give up some of their FOM earnings or both.

They also need to stop fecking around when it comes to deciding on regulations. I mean the 2014 engines still aren't locked in despite manufacturers like Mercedes already having spent millions working on them. By providing solid regulations and keeping them flexible it might entice the likes of Honda or BMW to return now that the economy is somewhat less toxic.

The overspend tax sounds like a great idea to me.

I've not been a fan of the way the regulations have become more and more restrictive over the years, if they become much worse it'll be practically GP2 where they're all using the same cars.

I think the idea of letting them spend whatever they like but funnelling money to the smaller teams at the same time would be brilliant for the sport.

If he had half a chance, Bernie would introduce that tax but funnel it into his pocket instead. Vile little man.

On the flip side, if someone over the winter produced a really quick car then the other teams have no hope of catching up if you limit updates. Which means a season full of processional GPs.

Exactly. Leave it so they can develop cars as the season progresses. One team with a dominate car for the whole season would be annoying if everyone didn't at least have a chance to make changes to their own car to try and bridge the gap.

Plus with how teams push the boundaries of regulations, you could come into situations where a key part of a teams car is ruled out later in the season with the team unable to change the car so it is still competitive without that part. Resulting in them being well of the pace or just pulling out for the rest of the season as a result.

Usual suspects at the front in first and second practice....I'd love to go to a GP here!

A good mate of mine is a marshall, mostly at Oulton Park but he goes all over the country doing it. It's all voluntary but he gets to see some good racing and generally enjoys it. In the last few years he's been 'promoted' to working on the rescue unit, basically a big Merc Sprinter van that acts as a response vehicle to big crashes.

Partly because of the work he and his fellow marshalls had done on the unit at various races they were sent - all expenses paid - to Abu Dhabi when the circuit was first build, I think to train some locals and generally check the facilities out for marshalling, he was amongst the first people to ever drive around there, albeit in a big slow van

fecks sake, Vettel's car has no running for most of FP3 with brake issues and still they get it to 3rd fastest >.>

Red Bull already have pole and the race won I fear already :(

Apparently Vettel has some car trouble, still not sure what. Could be demoted by a few places if he has to replace an Engine, I suppose.

Just watched it on sky plus now. Vettel was told to shut off his engine and pull to the side of the road. Any word yet on what the problem was?

Makes it more interesting for the title battle if Vettel gets some kind of penalty so for selfish reasons I hope he gets one.

Hamilton though was impressive, that sort of performance just shows you what McLaren are going to missing next season, a driver that can maximise his cars potential with Button just nowhere near him.

It's fantastic to look at, not too bad to drive around but for racing its pretty much one of the worst on the calendar.

missed that bit, watching the game.
He could be in trouble if his engine has a bad problem, I am sure I heard that he was on his last engine for the season.
If true they would have to put an old one back in, and take the 10 place grid drop.

knowing the FIA even if Red Bull fecked something up, Vettel will just get a tap on the wrist and nothing more.
