The F1 Thread 2011 Season

McLaren have gone with a wet setup then, a risk worth taking? I'm really not sure, I don't think they should take the chance.

Apparently Ross Brawn was surprised they've done that, too.

Vettel with 1:13.486, that's a new lap record I believe.

I heard on BBC before that there is a 60% chance of a wet race , so got to be worth the risk.

No it just isn't when the rest of the grid arn't doing it. They should just mirror what their nearest competitors are doing, the McLaren traditionally is a good wet car anyway. If its dry tomorrow they are going to get mugged on the straights and not have any top end speed to pass cars.

Ofcourse if its wet they should effectively walk it but 60% isn't enough for the risk.

Mclaren look slow... I think Ferrari could challenge vettel for the win tomorrow.

Judging by Button & Hamilton's comments post-quali it seems like McLaren are not even running a wet setup, they just don't have the quali pace or the straightline speed. Whitmarsh can try and spin it to say they are running wet setups but when Hamilton says stuff like

“I feel OK, I feel happy within myself,” Hamilton insisted. “I don’t think I’ve ever driven the car so hard in my life, really. I was on such a ragged edge, I even touched the wall at one stage, I literally gave everything I could.

“We were also trying to use the tow of another car, because we were so slow on the straight – we had the wrong seventh gear in. So we were 10 kms or even more – 12 or 13 kms – slow on the straight, so we were losing a couple of tenths just on the straight. But I pushed as hard as I could. It seems the other guys have made a step forward, so back to the drawing board.”

Hamilton gave an enigmatic response when asked if he was hoping for better race form.

“I really, really hope so. We had a little bit of a bad news earlier on about something on the car. That will undoubtedly hamper our race pace.”

Race pace will be better but no top end basically means they either beat them in the pits and stay clear or they are dead meat. Still can't understand why McLaren have not introduced a skinny rear wing, last season they didn't need to with the f-duct.

Then again Canada is rarely dull.

I used to watch almost every race.

Now I don't even know if there is a race and am even least bothered about the results.

F1 has become so boring?

Basically the Ferrari is very poor on hard tyres and lacking in downforce.

The fact that they are using super soft and soft tyres in Canada plus the relatively lesser reliance on downforce means that Ferrari are doing well here.

Always find it weird when people still say this. The second half of the noughties has seen some competitive racing. While overtaking is still an issue, atleast we don't have one guy winning every year like we did before.

Also we have the most talented grid of drivers since probably the 80's.

Anything but Boring.

Vettel and Red Bull combo admittedly are just a bit too good for everyone else atm, but the rest are neck and neck with each other.

Last season was amazing to watch, the season before, Button had the great start, and then everyone else lauched a ferocious comeback to try to haul him back...and well this season has been excellent so far.

So in short, make the effort to watch it again, and you will see it is better than ever.

I read that on BBC F1 website , maybe the wet weather set up was a good gamble after all.

Not sure they even running a wet specific setup, I think the general understanding is McLaren are running their lowest downforce config at this point of the season, they simply don't have a skinny rear wing to put on yet. But yeah that bit of extra wing will help by the look of the conditions now, the McLaren's are gonna have to jump the Ferrari's quickly though before Vettel is gone.
