The F1 Thread 2010 Season

Nonsense.

He was fecking poor in 08. He was slightly better in 09 but nowhere near the driver of the 2nd half of 07.

Going back to the championship. I am loving how Alonso is driving. He kept the faith and he kept saying that all he needed was podiums and he has been on the podium 7 out of the last 8 races. While the Red Bulls take points from each other Alonso has nipped ahead. Still think he has a tough task. Red Bull will be very quick in Abu Dhabi. If Red Bull are 1-2 into the first corner then they can easily swap Webber and Vettel if need be and win the title. But Alonso's tactics and driving have been fantastic. Reckon he'll be champion again soon perhaps even this year.

For me still the best driver currently with Lewis not far behind.

I don't know about two years, but Nick I agree with them have to say, I don't think that was a fully tuned in Raikkonen that last season, no doubt about that

I'd like to see him back, but only if he's fully committed. Otherwise he might as well stay away

A fully on it Raikkonen would have blown Massa away just like Alonso has this season, thats not to say he was terrible though because he wasn't.

Ferrari would be nowhere near as good a car as it is without Alonso helping in the development of the car.

After Schumi, Alonso is the best in working with the team in developing the car. He gets the maximum from the car and keeps getting the points needed for the team to continue developing the current years car. Kimi would have long since been out of the championship race and Ferrari will be focusing on next years car.

I wrote long detailed posts ages ago about the reasons behind Kimi's slump in the latter stages of 08 after Ferrari changed the car and he had massive problems with getting front tyres up to temp. In 09 Ferrari themselves were lauding his driving, with Chris Dyer saying he was putting that car in grid positions it had no right to be in. I'm not getting into a drawn out debate on it again because I can't really be bothered, suffice to say that desire to win was never his problem.

That's bollocks from start to finish. Ferrari mechanics said Kimi was better at car development than even Michael was. Mark Hughes wrote a piece about it for Autosport a few years ago about how they were shocked with him after his first few outings at Fiorano.

I agree, that is a myth about Raikkonen that he can't develop when comments from those that worked with him state that he was a very good development driver.

really want webber to win this now, always liked him

The problem for Kimi was that he wasn't all that interested and it hurt his relationship with the team.

Who said you were having a go at Ferrari? I said you were making out you knew better than the team, and you've just done it again. Ferrari said on countless occasions that his motivation and development work was never an issue, yet you seem to know more?

They were rumours of Kimi to Renault a few months back now its Red Bull maybe we see Webber in a Renault and Kimi in a Red Bull.

Ferrari said on countless occasions that his motivation and development work was never an issue, yet you seem to know more?

1. That's a bit like Jose saying Ramos is the best RB in the world
2. The fact that Ferrari are having to defend him in the media countless times about his development work speaks for itself. If they admitted to anything else, they'd have to face the heat on why they made him the highest paid driver on the grid
3. Results for Kimi at Ferrari speak louder than statements to the press.
4. If there were no questions about his motivation or development ability, they would have retained him over Massa. Instead they chose to pay his wages for the year even though he doesn't drive and opted to gamble on a driver who was coming back from a serious accident.

1. There were comments made to reporters from Ferrari mechanics and middle management, not just press releases to appease the masses
2. Same as 1.
3. This shows a fundamental lack of understanding of F1 to be quite frank, to suggest that a glance at results tells the story of a season is just ridiculous.
4. One word; Santander. No, make that two words; Santander and money.

anyway, moving on because this conversation is pointless....

RED BULL BOSS: NO DRIVER FAVOURITISM, I DON’T CARE IF WE LOSE

The Red Bull Racing team goes into the final race of the season with two drivers in contention for the Drivers’ World championship, but their best placed driver Mark Webber has a harder task than he would have had if they had thrown their weight behind him today.

Webber would have been one point behind Alonso if the team had backed him today, instead he is eight points behind, more than the gap between first and second places in the final race.

After today’s race – won by Sebastian Vettel, who now needs to outscore Alonso by 16 points and Webber by eight points – Vettel said he would think about letting Webber through in Abu Dhabi if the points dictated it, while team boss Christian Horner intimated that he would not let the drivers hand the title to Alonso.

But this morning I picked up some quotes from Austrian colleagues, from Red Bull drinks company boss Dietrich Mateschitz which explain why Red Bull managed the race as they did today. He said that he didn’t want to ‘manipulate’ things between his drivers even if it meant losing the title to Alonso.

Speaking in Austrian newspaper Kliene Zeitung, he said, “Let the two drivers race and what will be will be. if Alonso wins we will have been unlucky. I predict a Hollywood ending. Worst case scenario we don’t become champion? We’ll do it next year. But our philosophy stays the same because this is sport and it must remain sport. We don’t manipulate things like Ferrari do.”

Red Bull is a maverick brand, they pride themselves on doing things differently. For everyone to be talking about them, even if many are thinking that they are nuts, is what they live for. They are a marketing led drinks company, not a car manufacturer. On that basis what happens next is hard to predict.

He might not care but I bet Mark Webber does, but I believe if its down to the last few laps and Vettel can hand the title to Webber then he will do it anyway, he might need someone else to do it for him one day and these things are remembered.

Fair play to him then. I still have a feeling there is still a twist in this season yet, should be a great finale anyway. It would be really great if the Top 3 cars were within a few tenths as it wouldn't let anyone relax at any point in the race, no engine conserving just plain old flatout stuff.

On that point actually without looking up the details isn't it fair to say that Webber sits in the best position in terms of engine mileage of the Top 3?

Who said you were having a go at Ferrari? I said you were making out you knew better than the team, and you've just done it again. Ferrari said on countless occasions that his motivation and development work was never an issue, yet you seem to know more?

The amount of bullshit that has come out of Ferrari in recent years, I find it really hard to believe them especially after they sacked him. Kimi didn't look interested and it was beyond obvious to everybody that he wasnt. All he wants to do is turn up and race which are his words not anybody elses. He's a 70's driver in a series for the 2000's.

It's silly for the media to slam Ferrari for having a no.1 driver and also slam RBR for not having one.

RBR is right to not issue team orders when
1. Both drivers are still in contention. What if Vettel had let Webber win in Brazil and Alonso's engine blows up in Abu Dhabi?
2. Vettel is their long term prospect. Their aim is to win over the next few seasons and Vettel is their best bet. If Vettel, Webber, Alonso are in the same position on the last lap in Abu Dhabi, then I am certain team orders will come into play. Enforcing team orders before then could end up being a sucker punch to Vettel and they could feck up their next few seasons

Who has the most race wins? For example, who gets the title if Vettel wins the race and Webber's 2nd and/or Alonso's 5th so they're all on 256 points?

edit: Alonso has 5 wins, Vettel and Webber 4 (but Vettel would be on 5 after Abu Dhabi). Read Alonso will win if he's 5th and Vettel 1st, so presumably has more 2nd places. i.e. Alonso would win WDC, Vettel 2nd, Webber 3rd?

re-edit: read in the same article [http://www.telegraph.co.uk/sport/mo...our-drivers-left-in-F1-world-title-race.html] that if Vettel wins in Abu Dhabi he needs to score 15 more points than Alonso - contradicting what was said earlier. By my count they've both had 2x 2nd and 3x 3rd. Vettel's had 3x 4th beating Alonso's 2x 4th. Can anyone confirm my maths?

I think if Vettel wins, and Alonso finishes fifth, then Seb would be champion. Both drivers would be level on race wins, as well as second and third positions. But Seb has 2 more fourth place finishes, so he would win on that account (what a way to win!). Webber would be level on points if the above scenario happens and he finishes second, but he would have 4 race wins as opposed to the five wins each of Alonso and Vettel. I could be completely wrong but I used this site for the scenarios:

Championship calculator | F1 Fanatic - The Formula 1 Blog

Play around with it but I think that's what would happen!

Yea I remember hearing the commentators saying that if Vettel and Webber are 1-2 in that order Seb needs Alonso to be worse than 4th otherwise he'll be letting Webber pass.

Jamesallenonf1

#f1 Vettel says that if he's P1 and Webber P2 in the race, "We know we are driving for the team" ie he'll move over.

Jamesallenonf1

#f1 Alonso on Webber, "He proves how quick he can be. He has the opportunity to drive a compet car and can show his talent. Happy for him"

Jamesallenonf1

#f1 Alonso "Doesn't matter what happens on Sunday, it's been a great year." He looks pretty determined to me...

...

Not really gonna be that easy, if the Red Bull's carry their dominance here then its quite possible that they can finish 1-2 again. Alonso has to not only keep in touch with the Red Bull's but he has to keep those darn McLaren's out of the equation and seeming as they have nothing to lose its gonna be tough.

I still fancy Alonso to win though.

I actually saw your twitter page recently, I can't remember how, you may have been RT'd by someone I follow or something.
