The F1 Thread 2008 Season

Never. This one's my racing cherry.

Got to say I was dead lucky to get the tickets. Submitted a random entry for a lucky draw and got a pair of tickets

You been to one before? What is it like? Does it just whizz past and the sound coming like a year later?

You might want to invest in a pair of earplugs or something if you're close up. Seriously, your ears will start to really hurt and you'll not enjoy yourself if you're not careful. Earplugs will solve that and you can have a great time, even if you might look a bit of a tit (though, saying that, loads of other people will be wearing them, too).

It gets inside your head and rings it for 70 laps, its incredibly loud. But you will see nothing like it, they are 100 times better watching them live than on the TV and gives you a real appreciation for just how fast they are. I would imagine a track like Singapore is going to hold the noise in as well.

First time I went to watch them was testing at Silverstone at about 9am, arrived abit late but could hear them flying around about 3 miles from the circuit, awesome things.

There is no doubting Lewis's pace, but there is doubt on his mentality. Schumacher was cocky, Alonso is cocky, Kimi is cocky. The difference being that they all have something to back their statements up on. They have all won WDC. Lewis makes the statement that he is the best driver in f1, but if im not mistaken, its Kimi with the 1 on the front of his car. Not Lewis.

He could get away with these mistakes in the lower classes of racing as Uncle Ron always made sure he had the best equipment, but with the big boys he can't. He cost himself the title last year. Pure and simple.

I'd also like to point out the fact, that Alonso had no where near the level of support that Lewis had. Alonso couldn't run and hide behind Dennis like Lewis could. I doubt most of the bs coming out of Alonso last year but 50% of bs is the truth.

Lewis is an arrogant self assured 'choice word here' that deserves a good smack in the head. He needs better management then ron.

And I'm not sure if this part was meant only for me, or whether it was to add to the general Schumacher debate that appears to be going on beneath the main Hamilton one, but I'll throw it in too:

Now some may question his antics and rightly so, but Adelaide 94 was very much as much Hills fault as it was Schumachers. Damon even admitted this. He didn't know how bad schumacher was damaged so he went for the corner. Michael had the turn in and Damon was still there. It was a racing incident. Jerez 97 and Rascass 06 where not, but these are the only time schumacher has really over stepped the line.

Do feck off!

Hill's mistake in his own retrospect is that he shouldn't have made the move, because Shumacher was a damaged car already, and wasn't continuing. If he'd held back, he would have inherited first place soon enough anyway. But he didn't see Schumacher crash, so obviously his racing instinct is to take the opportunity when it arises. The same situation 100 times he'd try and take the position at that corner

But the blame can only be attributed to Schumacher. He had a wounded car and deliberately drove into Hill, because it was the only option left to him. And that's more than stepping over the line! The authorities bottled it big time

Was it bollocks a racing incident

Ahh come on....Adelaide was clearly Schumacher's fault, as was Jerez. Hill regrets it of course, but you can't seriously expect him to take any of the blame for it. Brad is correct.

Anyway, being cocky doesn't extend to driving people off the road like Senna or Schumacher.

The point about Ron being weak is valid.

cars going off for fun really at the last corner, good stuff

looks like a carpark event but since it's my country and im going to the race on sunday i say it's bloody brilliant!

Well there's no doubting how spectacular a backdrop Singapore floodlit at night looks

Ive not seen a full lap of the circuit yet. Is it more Monaco or Valencia in terms of being a street circuit? It'll be brilliant if its like the former...

Bit of both really with some tight turns and flowing corners but hopefully the race will be better than the borefest served up at Valencia!

Look out for the last corner though a few drivers bit too ambitious going into it and spinning out. Pit entry and exit looks ripe for accidents as well

Wow looks great under the lights, really spectacular. Just caught the last 10 mins of FP2 when I got in. Should note that the times were a tad slower in FP2 because of the cooler temps, I think that might suit the McLaren over a long run and Quali tomoz. But as for the track it looks like it might make a good race, great when it goes under the grandstand.

Looks amazing..
My friend from uni is in Singapore for the race.

Bernie was saying they've done all this for the TV.

All these lights, buildings and what not look great from what little I've seen, the one thing I hope that hasn't been missed is a track that provides a quality race.

Is 1.45 the lap time? - that's a long lap, and there's 61 of them. Isn't there a two hour limit to these things?

If it rains we'll surely have a timed race - in fact, even if it's dry and has a few incidents, we'd probably come pretty close.

I noticed that as well, it is quite long. I thought it might have been the fact that it is a new track adding to that, plus it is a street circuit - maybe the grip will improve over the course of the weekend... I would expect the qualifying lap times to be a lot faster, we'll see.

Saying that Spa has a similar lap time if not longer so its not that unusual. That one only went for 44 laps (wet track and rain at the end) so the two-hour time limit will probably come into effect.

Monaco was decided on the two hour cut off this season

Thing with Monaco is that it seems bizarre that a lap takes so long, and there are so many, but the distance the cars actually cover is relatively small. Presumably the same case in Singapore

That Ferrari looks hooked up, Hamilton should be in damage control tomorrow and try and atleast stay 2nd which will be hard with Raikkonen looking half decent. The trouble with Lewis now is the rest of the remaining tracks are historically better for Ferrari and his team mate is not helping him out at all.

I pray for a mid race downpour tomorrow.

Massa does look handy and Hamilton a bit scruffy but things can change by tomorrow. There is meant to be some rain in the day - it may effect the track.

I don't think we'll see much overtaking between the top runners, if the strategies are the same it may take something special to change it around.

Surely the safety car will come into play tomorrow at some point.

Alonso fastest again in the practice session

Reliability problems - what a shame - would have been great to see him mixing it up.

Gutted for Alonso, he was on for a decent result maybe even front row and now he has no chance from where he is UNLESS it rains.

But if it does rain like you said the tracks gonna either be damp or green and either way that gurantees some dodgy first laps.

Massa looks to be much lighter on fuel. I doubt he can be 0.6 of a second quicker than Lewis and nearly a second quicker than Kimi unless he is very very light on fuel and is banking on an early stop. Lewis and Kimi are probably better placed in terms of strategy since there are likely to be pace car periods on a new narrow street circuit.

Another impressive drive from Vettel. Should BMW be looking to sign him up instead of Heidfeld? He is a fantastic talent and is capable of challenging the MClarens and Ferrari's even in a BMW

if he was german i have no doubt they would...

but with alonso and vettel there are better options than heidfeld... i rate kubica though he seems very good

Isnt vettel already signed up to red bull for next year

i think technically hes signed to them now isnt he because they own torro rosso... but they have to sell torro rosso because of some new ownership rule... i might be wrong but thats what I thought...

they also have webber and coulthard signed up for reb bull as well dont they???...

[edit] Future
The "senior" Red Bull Racing team were understood to have an option on Vettel's services for the 2009 season depending on the team's performance. Red Bull owner Dietrich Mateschitz said in July 2007: "There are contracts in place, and if we perform, he will be back with us in 2009".[26] Vettel was confirmed as a Red Bull Racing driver for 2009 in the week leading up to the 2008 German Grand Prix, following the earlier announcement of David Coulthard's retirement at the end of 2008.[
27]

according to wiki... so thats that sorted then

Coulthard is retiring and moving into a higher role in the team. They have hired Vettel to drive for them next season as his replacement.

All sorted a few months back, if I am right.

Contracts can still be bought out and what not though so you never know. They are meant to be after Alonso as well, along with Honda and BMW.

That wasn't there when I started typing.

A chance to use this smiley though :annoyed:
