The reason (for Trip being generous) being that Dunc, like several others among us, assumed Wales/England would count. When Davids was discussed, the FIFA member aspect of it was never mentioned (that only came up much later, after the Kanchelskis situation), just the fact that Suriname was still a colony when Davids was born. Nobody brought up the FIFA thing - if it had occurred to someone back then, we could have avoided the whole Kanchelskis controversy.

But, obviously, technically speaking Davids and Jones are in the same category if we only focus on the FIFA membership aspect: both were born in one FIFA recognized nation and played for a different FIFA recognized nation.

I suggest that if someone wants a player they've already picked (before the Kanchelskis affair) recognized as meeting the "born in other country" criterion, they PM Trip about it. He may then be lenient or not, but formally Dunc's case would be an exception as I see it, it doesn't imply a change of the rules as such - and the rules say nothing about FIFA status.

Main point: appeal to Trip's mercy if you must - but let's not start the whole debate again.

Aye. I'd move him over and field Le Tissier in a free sort of shadow striker role more to the right (compared to where he is in the illustration above). Could keep the formation just as it is - just have Ginola switch sides.

Yeah, ideally the 12th pick would be a criteria with a bunch of fun attacking options or a 3rd CB thing to allow for tactical flexibility. Not a ton of great options in that vein from the no-European competition rule.

Litmanen in his prime would rather be a second/shadow striker with retarded goal-scoring statistics(15 goals in 21 CL matches).

I would play a 4-4-1-1 on paper so it doesn't look as if your wingers would be as offensively positioned as Litmanen as that would be a bit bananas.

That front 4 can never work together. Batisituta is better with a partner like Inzaghi. Toure will get caught out of position.

Yeah. I'm still having second thoughts on him.

- Ridiculous stats as second striker,
- Rijkaard describes him as "Dennis Bergkamp was brilliant for Ajax but the best No.10 we ever had was Jari". Played tip of diamond behind 2 strikers for CL victory.
- He also played in the middle of a 4-3-3.

Indeed, I can think of a certain personal favourite of yours, for starters. There's literally no role on the pitch which doesn't have someone quite handy, if only as a tactical option. And then there's keepers...
 
4-3-3 with three pacey dribblers up front for Pirlo and Mihajlovic to ping balls to. Mihajlovic is the only player in football history I believe to score a hat-trick with free kicks.

Something poetic about the feel and control he had in his peg for corners, crosses, long balls and free kicks.

As long as he has full freedom to score goals it won't matter much. His unique selling point certainly lays in how productive he was. 36 goals in 39 matches as his career best for Ajax, just stupid, it makes me quite put off when he is used as a playmaker further down without the necessary cover because of it though.

Completely removes the goalscoring if he can't move forward without it exposing the team defensively.

Almost every time I've seen him it has been like that.

Because there aren't loads. No one is ever going to pick a striker from that category or a playmaker or a winger. They're never going be nearly as good as players from the other criteria. None of them will be. That's why you aren't going to waste your early pick on that criteria and in the end you'll have to shoehorn your pick.
