The bad (typically gun related) things happening in America thread

Now up to 10 dead, including the first responding officer

someone tell me again why any human being should be allowed to own a gun, much less a fecking assault rifle?

Wait, ten dead in Colorado? I took a break from real life for a few minutes.

Christ al-fecking-mighty. Now it’s necessary to include a year date when talking about Colorado mass fatality events.

A family member (far removed) is up in arms about the AR-15 being classified as a weapon of war. Her reasoning is that no military on earth specifically uses the AR-15. She obviously read that somewhere. I don’t care for her.

What’s the vest velcroed over the suspect’s body in the tweet I posted a bit ago?

haven’t gotten all the way through the thread yet. But to answer your question in case it hasn’t been, it’s basically an anti-suicide smock. Velcro so there’s nothing to try and rip off and kill himself with.

Yep, I think @Penna saw such in The Guardian & said so.

I was of the thought that it might be a bulletproof vest, but was then taken a bit back by why such would be used specifically for this perp & not others. Makes total sense about the anti-suicide vest.

I wonder if we will see the Denver perp dressed similarly in mugshots soon.

Not blood, thankfully, but my blood married this mensa two years ago. He has been signaling signs of buyer’s remorse in recent months; I’m going to try to grease those skids to the fullest. I’m the only family member not on Facebook which is where this maroon is spouting such idiocy, I can only imagine what complete delusion doesn’t make its way to me.

Most likely, regarding that last point. Which is a shame to waste so many resources on them.

So much surreality in this clip from the store, shows the majority of the confrontation (contains disturbing images)...

Don’t think I have ever seen a live stream so close to such a tragic event not from a perpetrator (alleged perp walked out at 58:28, looks like a lovely fellow) before. Comments are really interesting.

Is this targeting a certain group or just another mass shooting in America?

What can you say? There'll be another one in a fortnight. Then another. Then another.

First officer on the scene was killed but apparently if the good guys have guns it will solve the problem.

Maybe vaccine administrators and checkout staff at King Soopers should have been tooled up ready. It is so crazy over there but it will never change.

The CNN article mentioned that one of the first people shot was in line to be vaccinated. Pure speculation at this point, of course, but it certainly caught my attention.

Certainly didn’t have this on my ‘reasons for vaccine hesitancy’ bingo card.

King Soopers is a weird name for a grocery chain. I've never heard of it.

The cop had seven kids. :(
It’s a subsidiary of Kroger, only in Colorado, I think.

We have some odd ones - Piggly Wiggly, Harris Teeter, Hy-Vee. Sure there’s dozens other unique ones out there as well.

because trying to make them illegal and take them off people would probably result in so many deaths that no government has the balls to try it?
It’s also been delusionally ingrained into people’s minds that gun ownership is a ‘god-given’ right. Helps the fetishizing.

Im pushing 60 but for as long as I can remember these sorts of shootings happen multiple times every year. By now I would think I should be surprised that nothing ever gets done about the gun issues in the US but Im not, its another year and another set of tragic deaths. It wont ever get better, it will slowly get worse.

The victims (or family members of the slain) of these mindless crimes should be able to sue the gun manufacturers and dealers unless they themselves were in the process of committing a crime. If their marketing strategy is aimed at self defense and home protection then they should be kicked in the fecking balls when their product is used to kill hundreds of innocent people year after year.

A part of the population would see it as a start of an revolution for goverment takeover. And they would feel that criminals get to keep their guns and therefore they would be left defenseless.

Pretty good layman’s explanation of how this is practically impossible here...

I have friends in Colorado. Need to check if it's Boulder where they live now, hopefully they're ok. I have no idea of how big the area is.

This is so sad - RIP.

To the American posters - what, if anything, do you think will be the straw that breaks the camel's back with regards to your gun laws? Is the pro-gun lobby (NRA?) just far too strong and influential for the law ever to change?

Boulder is pretty big mate.

We have friends in Englewood which is about half an hour or so away from memory.

I love Colorado, but bloody hell it’s had more than it’s fair share of these shootings.

Nothing will soon change it, I don’t think. The NRA is actually as toothless as it has been before its metamorphosis in its current gun fetish lunacy a few decades ago, so there’s a scintilla of hope, but events like these have become so commonplace, it’s almost background noise. We’ve had slaughters at grammar schools, high schools, colleges, festivals, night clubs, post offices, houses of worship, basic institutions of commerce (fast food restaurants, banks, movie theaters, big box stores), government offices, & military bases, basically every facet of life. Nothing has moved the needle towards common sense regarding gun control.

That's how I see it too sadly. I think if nothing changed after Sandy Hook, then it's unlikely to change ever.

My knowledge of US Law, and state law isn't great, but can't some of the states just outright ban guns? Or does it not work that way? I'm thinking if a few states begin outlawing them, then it might mean others follow down the line.

The crux here is that the majority of state legislatures are controlled by Republicans. Such legislation has been passed by Dem-controlled states, but guns still flow into those states.
As @WI_Red stated earlier, Boulder passed an assault weapons ban a couple of years ago, only to be struck down by a judge just last week (most likely wouldn’t have prevented this massacre, but indicative of the uphill battle locales have in trying to make their communities safer).
A completely flawed interpretation of the Second Anendment tied in with the allure of religion & big business has made this saga a Gordian Knot that seems permanent in our lives. Gun violence is a tattoo on the body of my country.

America isn't a good place anymore. My own affection for the country is scarily reminiscient to that friend who still wants to believe her cheating ex is about to turn a corner and change.

I want to believe it's not as bad as it is, and not going in the wrong direction. But I know I'm wrong.

It's funny how the freedom loving gun nuts see the right to bear arms as more important than the right not to be slaughtered whilst going about your daily business.

Their right to force projection is basically enshrined over our right to have simple protection.
