The bad (typically gun related) things happening in America thread

America isn't a good place anymore. My own affection for the country is scarily reminiscient to that friend who still wants to believe her cheating ex is about to turn a corner and change.

I want to believe it's not as bad as it is, and not going in the wrong direction. But I know I'm wrong.
I tell this to friends who think I'm exaggerating, but I honestly believe this is the case. I've never wanted to be wrong about something more in my life. I'm from Texas and at one point I thought I understood the gun culture, but now it's clear the argument is intellectually dishonest at best. The more we become desensitized to it, the more this will happen until a real-life Gangs of New York script starts unfolding across America.

I mean even for the literalists, there's the word 'well-regulated' right there.

It's concerning.

This is, imo, essential listening for anyone who wants to have an opinion on the NRA.

Also Radiolab is pretty much always awesome.

I 100% agree.

As an aside, I remember exactly where I was when I first listened to this. The wife and I used to volunteer in Bama to be "victims" for a K9 SAR team. We would get dumped in the middle of the woods and wait till the team found us. It was really awesome to watch. Anyways, I was sat in the middle of nowhere listening to this episode while all around me dozens of gun shots were going off in the distance from some rednecks shooting at something. Kinda terrifying.

The US can be so random. In the worst possible ways.

This is it.

If a classroom full of 6 year olds, babies, can get blasted to bits by an assault rifle and the country's response is "Thoughts and prayers" then that country is broken beyond repair. America is a lost cause with guns. They'll never change.
Well, you have to factor in the obvious ‘crisis actor’ angle into this.

Ah, now we shall see how quickly Fox News can cover this.

Why did I look at the replies.

Never look at the replies.
I only had a quick scan but was pleantly surprised that many were sticking it to them

Top comment is from Jeff Tiedrich

Not quite as bad as I thought for a social media site.

But, yes, it is still replete with mental deficients.

Right wingers going hard right now with stuff like this...

What a fecking dunce...

feck sake.

I saw one saying people are fat so should we have fork control.

People be dumb.

For so many, many of those "people" I wish their parents had used birth control.
I remember my pop telling me early in my life that ‘he loves individuals, but he hates people.’ It confused me at first.

This is a perfect example of his sentiment.

I love the ones who are saying that Biden let this murderer into the country due to his lax border policies.

What if after a day of Fox frothing it was released that "oops, we made a mistake, is name is Chad McFacistface and he is a registered republican".

You are correct, it’s just a law.

And you’re right, there’s no inertia to repeal the law or craft a different one. It smacks of the same autonomy with which the tobacco industry had for decades. It took a massive aligning of some stars (& some luck) in the late 80s to be able to pierce the defenses the industry had erected around themselves & finally hit them in the pocketbook & further change advertising to the better. With the country even more polarized currently, there simply won’t be any way the gun industry will soon face retribution for the hell they have wrought on this country.

Christ, I hope I am wrong, but we’ve been here far too many times in the past. It’s a macabre Groundhog Day.
It's so fecking depressing isn't it. I refuse to live in fear but that doesn't stop me checking for the exits everywhere I go.

Gee, maybe it would have been better if this radicalized individual wasn't able to access firearms so easily. Over to you, Tucker.

A whole population radicalized by high fructose corn syrup, TV commercials and Zoloft

I hate how that'll change the discourse entirely. Before the identity was revealed, all of the talk was about gun control. Now, it'll all be about the darn foreigner and how they're coming in to destroy America. My question is how a recent immigrant someone would even get access to a freaking AR-15 that easily; that, to me, is absolutely ridiculous.

A bit off topic but your post got me thinking. Now we all know correlation doesn't equal causation,

Can it really be coincidence?

(Rest in peace to the poor souls, i'm beyond discussing gun control at this point, I just despair)

I saw something, somewhere, that he had been in the USA for most his life. Forget ISIS, it's more likely he was radicalized by the US.

Not sure I caught everything, but wasn't it said he is a long term resident who came to the US as a child?

Mocking anti-depressants is really not the angle you should take in this situation, chief.
It is an angle when people are popping these pills like aspirin without having therapeutic assistance to go with it.

Edit: But quick googling tells me the anti-pharmaceutic line is a staple talking point used by US gun apologists, and that's not something I want to associate myself with at all, and it's also not an argument I want to make at all, so I retract the sloppy comment.

One question I quite never seem to find a clear answer for: of all the mass shootings that happened in recent years, which % was done with legal weapons and which % with illegal weapons?

Yes, when he was 3 years old.

Yeah, Penna's right. I made a mistake in saying that. That might have been a Freudian slip on my end probably due to my concerns over how this will be framed by much of the American media.
