The Americas Draft

@Chesterlestreet I'm actually confused of the born/represented rule now. By definition it now says either he represented the country or was born in one of those countries. Does it have a minimum year(s) to have stayed there or?

Case in point - José Eulogio Gárate - is he eligible in this case or not?

As per the rule, as it now stands, he clearly is.

But his is precisely a case of the sort we're talking about above - and the reason I introduced the caveat which has now been removed (because people found it confusing).

As far as I know, he was never eligible for Argentina - his parents aren't Argentinian (but Spanish, formally - Basque, more particularly), and he didn't grow up in Argentina either. He was simply born there (because his parents worked there, presumably - I don't know the exact circumstances).

So, the anwer is - yes: He is eligible as per the rule. But can you make a case for him belonging - naturally, as it were - in this draft? If not, the pick would likely be dismissed as not being in the spirit of the draft.

Got it. He's Basque for example so culturally should belong to the Spanish community. Either way there are cases but depends on(subjectively) would fit or not in the spirit of the draft. Came to my mind since he's (fairly) known.

As an informal regulation we could perhaps add that if a manager is considering picking someone in this category, he should settle the matter of eligibility per PM before making his pick.

The possible gray areas here would be old school players of a certain ilk, I think: Someone who may or may not have played club football in the Americas, for instance (in some cases documenting the latter can be very difficult).

For modern players, I think it should be fairly clear which players belong to the Laudrup category - i.e. players that really have no business featuring in this particular draft.

Probably don't have the time to have my own team but happy to assist someone else if anyone needs it?

I don't like it, generally - I think the guy running it should be 100% neutral.

Anyway, I have no particular interest in this draft - I only agreed to running it because people were seemingly keen on a South American draft, so I have to presume they actually are.

Someone will take the last spot, I'm sure. If not we can always get Balu to pretend that he's Anto again - that has worked well before.

I've never done one of these before but I would be willing to take the last spot.

ON POTENTIALLY CONTROVERSIAL PICKS/SPIRIT OF THE DRAFT:

Rule of thumb: If the player has no obvious connection to the region (the Americas) football wise, he's likely to be rejected as not being in line with the spirit-of-the-draft principle. Ask yourself this: Is this player clearly (by common sense and consensus) a Swedish footballer who happened to be born in - oh, I don't know...Las Vegas? Well, then you shouldn't pick him - he isn't a representative of US football in any meaningful sense, and has no business featuring in this draft.

While several factors could potentially be of interest here, I would say that a minimum of sorts, in terms of having a proper connection to the region, would be that the player has actually played for a team in the region at club level. Use common sense, though - in most cases it will be obvious that the player doesn't really belong here (but would be a much more natural fit in a European draft of some description).

7th is not a great position. Still my master plan may still come to fruition.

Do you still have a post count limit per day? Not that it really matters, chances are you'll get promoted soon enough

Nice to see some new names here, refreshing (in the draft, not in the forum, as you've been here longer than me )

Yes I have a 5 post limit. I've read the forum for a while just rarely posted. I really enjoyed reading the last draft thread though so this should be fun =)

The usual warning:

From now on, DO NOT NAME UNPICKED PLAYERS.

Repeat offenders will be beaten with a blunt instrument. Probably. At least scowled at.
