That Sensible Football Forum

I can only speak for myself of course but I`m personally against the idea. I do agree that something needs to be done, but like many others I favour a stricter moderating of the current forum. I think it has helped a bit after the issue was brought up in the first thread as well, even though that might be because we finally have something to talk about.

I usually don`t post very much in the football forum, and I rarely go into long discussions there either, so I probably don`t get recognized. I don`t post crap though and I feel that I can contribute as well as any other, atleast almost. I`m against the idea, because there is no way I, or posters like me, will be included in the new forum, we don`t "stand out" enough. That would leave me with a crap forum where nothing but shit will be thrown. It will be the newbies all over again really. I`m probably being selfish here, I can see why others would want this new sub-forum, but as I said I`m against it personally.

I was about to post something along those lines. None of my posts particularly stand out, but they contribute to discussion, i dont want to be left with a bunch of WUM's who have their own point of view, and value no-one else's. So if it means anything....i'm against it.

It's the only valid solution to the problems we've got with the football forum...which we all seem to agree is currently not working

The thing is it's all good for us to say we need stricter modding and so on but we aren't mods and we aren't doing the work:

Scanning the threads for muppets,
Closing/moving/editing threads,
Banning and warning posters.

If all of the mods are against this idea and for stricter modding then I'm happy with that (in fact I'd prefer it) as they are doing the work. Otherwise maybe this should be looked at ... if it doesn't work, shut it down and everything goes back.

Too risky, you'd have to ban feckin loads of posters and could hammer the site in terms of traffic

Exactly. It's an obvious point that seems to float over everyone's heads.

I also find it hilarious how people make the point about an elitist forum being pretentious and self appreciating, and yet at the same time harp on about how we should just "ban all the idiots"

Right, so why are there not 30-40 mods then? Even 20-30? This would improve matters if they were all robots.

Moderators are fine, but the question is, who deems something as being quality or not? Exactly, they are not robots, and each person will see one thing in a different light to the other. Herein lies a massive problem.

My argument is that if you get rid of the newbie, the forum will police itself. However, the problem there is that returning banees and windup driver sorts can enter the main forums at will. This is where the 20-30 moderators come in.

Because those who are banned have been given a chance but have proved themselves to be feckwits. This forum would be an invite only. People that don`t post that much, like myself, won`t be given a chance. And if the new forum works fine, I don`t see why the posters there would want many more in. I can`t see how you would find a "fair" way of deciding who`s in and who isn`t. What would the guidelines be?

And probably feck it up, probably by leaving it in a bin bag next to the bin when the bin men are coming next morning.

Leave such things to people with expertise and experience of such matters. :p

Experience in creating a forum?

You basically click "new forum" and then tick some boxes

Having met both you and Ruben, I'd make sure you were given access to the forum, I doubt the idea will take off though, seeing there's not even an ongoing discussion in the admin forum.

In all honesty I could see more chance of you getting in there than me ...

Agree, and it's apparant that no one really knows what the feck they're doing at the moment in terms of modding the football forum. And at risk of labouring the point, this is an obvious problem.....one of the reasons this place is good is that you can have a bit of verbals, there's no need to kill that. At the same time you can no longer have any lasting decent football thread due to the non-contribution of gimps

I can understand the concerns of those who don't post that regularly and fear they'd be left behind with an ocean full of gimps. That's easily sorted tho, either let everyone in to start, or they'll get in over time. I'd envisage the football forum being far busier than the sensible forum anyway

An elitist forum's a better and easier option, though. Select say 20. . .and only invite the one's that are the best in future. And I don't think it'd harm the main boards, as most of us would love to mingle with the spastics just for the entertainment factor.

And there in that very statement lies the problem. It has always amongst other things been the problem. It was becoming a problem before you even joined.

It was already suggested that it wouldn't be invite only, and that people would just be turfed out when they start ruining it for everyone. This appears to have been ignored

Not really that different from the Current Events forum, and better than going on some mass banning spree that risks sucking the life out of the forum

Anyone remember michael owen soccer on the ZX spectrum? slightly off topic I know ...

It would be extremely hard to turf out an elite poster, even more difficult to determine spoilers.

Why? Same rules should apply to all on a new forum.....I agree re the sentiment that older posters etc get more of a chance generally speaking, but if anyone spazed it up they could be suspended/booted...

Not with you re the spoiler bit?
