Thank you Van Gaal Thread

Highs: Martial, FA cup, winning some big matches vs City and Pool. I won't give him Rashford as that was more circumstance for me, though fair play for giving him matches after he broke through.
Lows: MK Dons, CL group stage, Rooney, lowest goals scored & wasted first halves

We never managed to get the potent attack and solid defence working in the same game, either one or the other under his reign. He was a lot more cautious in the end than I'd hoped he would be.

I don't know if the squad is in better shape now to be honest. We moved some palyers on that needed to go, but arguably we'd have been stronger with one of RvP/Chich and Nani would have got a few games, too. The Di Maria fiasco was regrettable.

Going forward he's left us with big holes to fill. I think we still need another CB (Blind back to CDM I reckon) and RW, which was always the case, and probably another LW/ST and CM, depending on how Mourinho lines us up. Youngsters have filled in admirably, but we are where we probably deserve to be and they won't really kick us on in the next couple of seasons (though the future looks good).

A shame it didn't work out but I think it was clear since December he was never going to complete his process.

We all know it wasn't good enough, but winning the FA cup is seriously the best way to end things. FA cup winners, some good youngsters developing, some hope for the future. All the best in retirement Louis.

Absolutely the right decision that he should be gone. Horrible football for 2 seasons. But hopefully now we have finally moved on from the shadow of SAF. but congratulations to Louis and the team. I'm glad he's going but I'm happy for him as a decent man to
Go out with a win. And as someone who grew up on the FA cup and it's glamour today's reminder of the 70s and Whiteside scoring in 85 in extra time while down to 10 men has left me elated. Thanks for today Louis. Now onto better things

Thank you Van Gaal for winning the FA cup and ensuring my username wasn't a total flop!

I think it's the right decision, this season hasn't been anywhere near good enough, and our football has been too poor for too long.

Having said all that, I really do like LvG, and I'm disappointed it didn't work out for him here. Great for him to bow out on a high. Enjoy your retirement Louis!

Thanks for the laughs, The Cup, the Pressers and also the abuse i received from opposition supporters. LOUIS VAN GAALS RED ARMY.

Right decision for him to leave, but you can see some of the positive effects he's had on the team. All our players look a lot more comfortable in possession than before his arrival.

And his run to hug Giggs was adorable.

Thank you Louis van Gaal for trying your "outmost best" and winning us the FA cup. I hope they have a role in mind for him.
I also would like it if a relevant role can be found for him, alongside Woodward and SAF. If he is willing to serve, he still can make a huge contribution, especially in youth development and club infrastructure building.

Feck me we have some soft fans. I am finally happy now that he is leaving. Was absolutely toxic for our club which should be what we actually care about.
Why was he toxic????

He was simply not able to deliver to expectations quick enough.

There was no major civil war with him and the board, squad or fans, everyone wanted him to properly succeed, it's just a real shame he didn't.

I'll say thanks for the FA Cup, only because it has annoyed me for years how little respect we have given the competition. For everything else, feck off LVG you twonk.

Think this is a good conclusion of his time here. To finish his time off here with an FA-Cup title is great of course - both for him, the players, the club and the supporters. Other than that it didn't really work out great for him. He didn't get the results we needed in neither CL or PL, and our playingstyle under him hasn't been the most entertaining and attacking one.

Thanks lvg, you've laid some.good foundations and highlighted a lot of good youngsters coming through. Thanks for the FA cup!!!

fecking. Yes.

3 years after Ferguson and we have the foundation to push for the next dynasty.

LVG came in at an all time low (in my lifetime) and frustrated the life out of us all by encouraging pragmatic, boring, soulless football...

But he leaves on a high having led us to glory. I think history will look fondly upon him.

I think LvG has been fantastic with the youth players.

He deserves a lot of credit. He has done a much better job than it seems. If Barca is anything to go by we'll look back and realize what we had.

Bayern as well, I genuinely think the Shaw injury was the turning point this season - we were just starting to look like a dangerous team. If the reports are true then at least LVG goes out on a high note.

I'm still a big fan of the man, I like a character, it's the manager that's been the problem. Shame that for whatever reason we mostly got to see the bad side of his work rather than some of better things he's shown in previous jobs.

If this is his last moment in football, I'm happy he left on a high note.

Agreed. I'm relieved that he's leaving but I'm glad its on a relative high. I could never quite bring myself to dislike the mad fecker, much as he exasperated me.

Exactly, the vast majority of the posters on here don't realize what a torrid time we had with injuries. We have 1 recognized central defender.

He tried his best, I was impressed with the way he lined the team up today after the Red card. I reckon he failed to get his message across to the players, football is simple, managers that tend to make it difficult like him will struggle in English football that is very direct.

Some might think it's just FA Cup, yes it is. But winning a trophy post Fergie was significant and now the team know they can do it. Next manager have their work cut a bit. Thumbs up to LVG and thanks.

It's kind of sad that it didn't work out in the end, but ultimately Van Gaal only had himself to blame. Hamstrung himself with all the silly decisions he made over the two seasons he is (was?) here.

I was hoping for a United equivalent to "We are the best in Berlin, in Dortmund, in Germany, and soon Europe" speech but at least we got the FA cup.

It seems some of LVGOUT crowd are sad that their 400+ post thread is coming to an end so they're seeping into other LVG threads trying to bash him one last time before he leaves...
As if getting humiliated by Arsenal,MK dons, Leicester and Everton was any better.

And i failed to mention that the league at the top for LVG was much weaker too with City giving us every oppurtunity to take 4th and 80 points giving a Comfortable 10 point title win for Leicester. Still he blew it. And LVG used Fellaini more if anything.

And as for youth Moyes also gave us Januzaj in case anyone forgets who LVG mistreated after wards along with Pereira and Wilson. 3 Of our brightest talents in that age group.

And as for one terrific signing when you basically ridiculously sell all your team 2 seasons and spunk 250 million making the squad not much better and thinner, you are bound to atleast get one right. He even fecking bought a club record signing and sold him one year later as he didn't fit. What sort of plan was Di Maria and Valdes ?

As for the FA cup we just about managed to win against fecking palace and got a relatively easy run. Given 250 million and 2 settled seasons i think Moyes could have had a decent shot with this run as well. Oh and even in his first season Moyes did fair bit better in CL also with the same old squad pretty much playing much better football there.
:lol::confused::wenger:

We still had Paddy McNair and Phil Jones, along with Chris Smalling.

No, we only had Mike. McNair was youth and Jones got injured since the first game of preseason. We were all concerned. Maybe I was harsh, let's say he put his faith in Jones and it didn't work. But we all felt he should have gotten a 2nd center back which I believe it would have gotten him Top 4.

Fair enough I suppose. He had faith in his players and it didn't work out. Isn't the first time and won't be the last.

Idiotic decision by the Board and Woodward to not endorse LVG these last six months. They should have just said "No decision will be made till the end of the season. No coaching changes will happen no matter what". Just saying that will ease the tension around the club, the media and the fans.

In all honesty we do owe LVG a thank you. He did steady the ship (Moyes left us in a big mess) got us back in CL football in his first season in charge but admittedly he did fail his second season (CL football on goal difference) but won us a cup. Not good enough for us as a manager at the end of the day but he did an average job not a terrible job.

Unfortunately it didn't work out for him but I wish him all the best. His Ajax team that won the Ucl and League double unbeaten with a squad full of teenagers in 95 is still the greatest achievement I have seen in European football.

"I win a trophy everywhere he go" - he was right on that.

I am glad we won the FA cup after a 12 year hiatus and that he is leaving. Good luck to him.

Nearly made a thread to see if anybody else feels really quite sorry for him. Today was his big day, he hasn't reached the highs we'd hoped for at United but doesn't deserve the mob with pitchfork treatment from a few in here.

Today all I saw was an old man delighted to have had his special day and won a trophy. By the time he went to bed, every media outlet was focussing only on Mourinho. That's going to hurt.

A very unfair way for him to bow out. Thank you Louis, miss you I will.

Was a disappointing time with us given the league positions and football on show but he did have his moments, including a FA Cup. So, thank you and now, farewell.
