Tennis Thread 2014

Drives me wild when anytime a person or a team make a good comeback there's somebody there to run the classic "HE'S BOTTLED IT" or "HE'S CHOKING!".

Can't for fecking once people just accept that maybe, just maybe, that player/team making the comeback has upped their game, got it together and is playing quality stuff? Rant over

You have a point, but it's misguided in this instance. Novak was known in his younger days for his weak mentality (at least compared to those other players at his elite level). He was 5-2 up, had to chances to serve for the set, and fecked 'em both up. The second game, where Federer broke back and made it 5-5, he double faulted or or generally made a mess of all of his serves. He was choking.

But he didn't. Novak just completely went into his shell, rather then Fed suddenly upping his game to an unbeatable level.

Djokovic looks injured.

How many medical breaks are you allowed? Novak takes them constantly, whenever he's in trouble.

The "bottled it" thing is usually pushed by spectators who haven't played the sport, and therefore struggle to comprehend how momentum swings can change matches.

People really have this irrational hatred against Djokovic on the Caf.

Doesn't play well= Djokovic chokes again inspite of him proving his mental strength again.

Looks legitimately injured= Mind games by Djokovic .

He got his first treatment in the 2nd set and it never looked like anything bothere him at all. Shame on me if I'm accusing him wrongly, but Djokovic does have a history of getting "treatment" at convenient times.

Yup, he has no previous at all in (a) choking at important moments, and (b) constantly taking medical timeouts at convenient points.

Federer's winning this all day long. Ffs.

Why would that be bad? My favourite player is Nadal but Federer is a true champion. I'd love to see him win this at 32 after being 5.2 down in the fourth. You can't help but like the guy.

He's a fantastic player - they both are. Not sure why anyone would criticize either.

I don't think I can stomach watching Federer win this.

If Fed wins today, apparently he'll be the third oldest player to won a Grand Slam on the open era.

I don't think that he is faking anything this time. He slipped twice on the last set so might have had a small injury.

He does it strategically. I remember he called for the trainer right when Murray was serving for the US Open, it's a deliberate ploy to halt his opponents rhythm.

I've never really liked him, great player that he is. Plus I want Nadal to beat his Slam record.

I know that, but this time I think was legitimate. He slipped twice, could have injured there.

What are these linespeople doing for fecks sake?

He choked in his earlier years and has improved a lot in his last few years.

People here tend to equate choking with not playing well.

Keep on continuing your chokovic lulz banter though.

Great rally. Novak needs to do more of this, drag the rallies out, tire Federer. Because Federer will tire first, surely.

I don't like the guy. The Barcelona of tennis for me.

Novak doesn't seem to be hitting the ball as crisp as he was earlier in the match, especially on the forehand. Federer's getting to more of those shots then he was before.

I'd like Nadal to beat his record too, but I think it's wrong to be saddened by a great champion coming towards the end of his career winning a title as the underdog. Doesn't make a lot of sense to me, to be honest. Perhaps I am just more of a romantic.

I'm miles away from being a Federer fan, but I was delighted by that comeback in the fourth. I'm not saying that I actually want him to win, but whichever one wins it now will deserve it.

Did Fed won all three games in this set without losing a single point?

He's a slimey git. Give me the passion of Nadal/Murray/Djokovic anyday over Fed.

federer's intensely passionate, he just doesn't let it out on the court because it affects his game negatively, while it helps Nadal and Djokovic. Murray's not exactly my cup of tea either.
