Tennis Thread 2014

So, is that shorter than last year's? Remember, that was a disappointingly one-sided thrashing, too.

Glad Kvitova won. Bouchard seemed very nervous going out on to the court.

The thing is don't many of the women's players want to play 5 sets too? I don't think there's anything wrong with awarding equal prize money it just seems so with the current format and state of the women's game.

I imagine 3 set matches is also the reason for more unpredictability in the women's slams, as if it were 5 sets the top players have a better chance of comebacks etc. Sharapova might have turned it around against Kerber, breezed past Bouchard and then we would have had a proper final.

Women's tennis is so bad. 55 minutes for a final of Wimbledon? Its appalling. They need to make it 5 sets.

Its a joke they get equal prize money.

Have to say I'm on this side of the argument. Equal pay for equal work definitely but this isn't. I suppose though at the end of the day there's plenty more important injustices out there again women then this.

Havn't really be watching but I expect the great Andy Murray to win again this year, the rest of them are right boring bastards.

Yep, I definitely believe in equal pay for equal work but this isn't it. An in Grand Slam tennis it's a bit of a joke that Bouchard will get the same as whoever loses tomorrow in Djokovic or Federer.

Yeah men and women getting paid the same would be ridiculous.

They don't though, they get paid the same for less work.

Thats to say nothing about the relative disparity between fitness levels, talent and skill between the mens and womens games. Tennis, along with every other sport is an entertainment business, and the mens game just provides so much more entertainment.

Nah.

Murray needs a coach who will push him and not take his shit. Lendl did exact that and he would never have played that passive with him as coach. It was the Murray of a few years ago waiting for his opponent to make mistakes.

I really hope he gets rid of Mauresmo.

Otherwise known as discrimination, which is something society us doing away with.

As for enter entertainment value - it's completely subjective isn't it.

Tennis is one of the few sports where the women's game gets about as much attention as the men's. Perfectly right that they get equal prize money. Kvitova played some fantastic stuff today, I suppose she's not worth the full whack either though? Or are we just doing it on a player by player basis?

It's not discrimination, but its such a boring discussion when all one party does is throw and claims like that in lieu of an actual point.

I guess we could solve it all by having the women and the men play in the same draw, but when all the women are knocked out by the second round it would be kinda pointless.

We can agree to disagree on the main point of pay disparity. The head of the women's tour has already said the women are ready and willing to play best of five.

The 2nd point about the men's game being more entertaining is obviously completely subjective.

No, its not subjective. By any measure, men's game is definitely more entertaining. This is why tickets for the men's final will go for 4-5 times more than the women's final.

Yeah. I think the thing for me is that whilst the entertainment value might be subjective to the individual from when I've noted and I could be wrong, but I think the viewing figures for the mens is higher and the re-sale prices for the top men's game is higher. For me ultimately taking away from the relative skill/fitness/quality of the two games if you just look at the market I think if they did separate the slams the mens would sell for a lot more in terms of buying the tv rights and the tickets would sell for more.

I don't think it would extend to all women's and men's games, I think some of the female players would earn more than some of the men and rightly so, but probably the top four guys would earn more if it was based on market demand.

And personally I don't see what's wrong with that. I don't get why they need equal pay when it's not the same and I don't mean the number of sets, the fact is the opponents they play differ on almost every attribute you can think off. The title of "Tennis player" is the same but what they're doing, the level and the popularity is from my personal observation different. Of course if you had two workers doing the same job and on average facing the same level of difficulty they should have base salaries which are equal but when it's not the same then I don't see why it should be equal. I think the comparison that a female model earns much more than a male counterpart is a good equivalent because at the end of the day there's more demand in the female fashion part of the market than the men's and just because they're both under the title of "Clothes Model" doesn't mean they deserve the same pay.

But like I said I think there's only so much it's worth talking about given they're all very wealthy at the end of the day and there are much bigger injustices out there. I think what can be annoying is when it's seen as a triumph for equality where for me I think it's an area of unfairness, but as I said in context it's not exactly a pressing issue.

I think that we're just in a particularly bad time for Women's tennis at the moment. The vast majority of players seem to just stay on the baseline and rely on blunt power and strength whilst the grunting and screaming can be pretty unbearable at times. There's a real lack of quality and star power there.

It will hopefully turn around, there was a time when the Women's game was more exciting to watch than the Men's. Maybe they should introduce playing 5 sets on a trial basis to test it out? I think it would help things. Having a grand slam final last less than an hour is pretty crap.

And to think that 20 years ago, people without any knowledge about tennis were advised to watch the women first because they played with more finesse and relied less on raw athleticism... one reason why I basically stopped watching women's tennis is that they all play like clones.

I've made a pasttime out of counting how many slices are played per match and it's incredible how many women's matches end without a single slice...

Going for a Djokovic win in 4 or maybe even 3, think he'll be too strong for Federer.

Both looking pretty sharp from the get go, hopefully bodes well for a good match.

He played a totally flat game. Entirely his own doing and nothing to do with the personnel in his box. One of the things that infuriates me about Andy Murray fans is all the excuses they make for him and all the apportioning of blame somewhere else. Nadal has had the same coach since he was a little boy. When Nadal loses (or any other top player for that matter), there is never this nonsense about his coach.

The fact is Murray isn't as good Nadal and Djokovic and he's not better, in my opinion, than a fully fit Federer. His win at Wimbledon last year was partly because of injuries to said players. Stop making excuses for the incredible sulk. This is why Nadal is and always will be far more of a favourite than Murray.

Those 2 serves by Federer to set up the set point were awesome.

Stunning first set. Nothing between them really. Could be in for a long one.

I could happily sit for a few hours and just watch Federer hit backhands over and over again.
