Tennis Thread 2011

Poor error from Nadal at 15-30 on the Djoko serve. You NEED to hit those shots if you want to beat this guy.

Djoko serving for set and he gets broken. That's very very surprising. He's the far stronger of the two mentally off late. Hopefully Nadal can hold this time and not fold under the slightest of pressure on serve.

Djokvic is an incredible player btw. Sportsman of the year surely?

30-0 up and Nadal goes on to lose the game and set. Great tennis by Djokovic. Nadal is so so weak mentally against Djokovic. I don't remember the last time he's even saved a break point against this guy.

I think Murray deserves a lifetime achievment award for managing to get 5 breaks vs Djoko and also being in a position to serve for the match.

Bloody hell Nadal show some god dam offense for once. 30-15 up on the Djoko serve and you continue to flight the ball and be so bloody defensive.

This is unbelievable. 4-4 and 30-15 up on Djoko's serve yet again and Nadal does that baffling backhand flighted shot yet again. Djokovic is absolutely SMASHING that away and he does it not once but twice in that game. Shocking stuff.

Can't believe he won. Absolutely fecking unbelievable level of tennis plus mental power.

So just how big an icon is Djokovic now in Serbia?

He's simply too good for Nadal right now.

The absolute number one. Followed by the nation's adoration for basketball. But Nole that's just something we never had in the history of sports in Serbia.

fecking hell Djokovic!

37 wins on the bounce, is that a record?

I have no words for Djokovic anymore. He's just incredible. Not even Federer at his peak has played THIS well against someone of the quality of Nadal.

IMO Djokovic is definitely a favorite for RG now. The only way I can see Nadal winning is if someone takes out Djokovic and considering how shit everyone apart from Nadal and Djokovic are right now, that's pretty unlikely as well.

I think I know how Fed fans might feel when he comes up against Nadal now. I've just completely given up any hope of Nadal beating Djokovic now. I'll be missing the RG final and I think it's actually not going to be a bad final to miss.

fair play for taking defeat graciously

Arriving at Roland Garros unbeaten :wenger: That's unthinkable

He's probably going to depart RG unbeaten as well. I wonder what the odds are on him doing The Slam this year?

McEnroe did 42 at the start of a season so that means Djokovic reaching the semis will beat that record. So it's gone then.

Read a line somewhere and it's so true:

Nadal raised the bar for mental and physical strength and now Novak has beaten it.

Incredible isn't it... People were still impassioned four months ago as to which of Federer or Nadal was the best ever. What does that make Djokovic now? :)

Tennis golden age for sure... You gotta feel for Murray (who celebrates his 24th birthday today) but at the same time, rest assured all these losses will build him in the long run, and doubtless lead him to a Grand Slam title.

Well Djokovic has to win atleast 10-15 more Slams before we can start talking about that but this is certainly one of the best run of form ever. The way he balances defense and attack is just out of this world. He's like Nadal on steroids.

Will be interesting to see how he reacts to his first loss though. Would be even more interesting to see who on earth manages to do it!

I can almost imagine an ATP meeting taking place without informing Djokovic and every player deciding how to take down Djokovic

Maybe the Spurs Lasagna!

Well to me that debate is incredibly moot anyway, I mean why opposing everyone all the time rather than just feeling lucky to have such champions competing against each other?

What I meant was, how is the debate going to go now.. People saying Federer is the best ever will have to answer to his head-to-head record against Nadal. He has won the most Grand Slams but even that actually isn't true, what with 15 people having won more, starting with Roy Emerson.

So should we argue it is Nadal that claims the title? How could he though, when his contests with Djokovic have been so disputed...And since it's not Djokovic, who can it be?...

I thank Nole for ending this debate, not by being the solution to it, but by showing there is no answer. All three stand out thanks to incredible talent, hard work and will. My preference goes to Djokovic who sat four years at world number three and still found the determination to step up that final gear and overcome the two greats. This added with a personality that has no equal in men's tennis.

decent turn of phrase there Nani Nana

Well tbh I don't really think either of these will go down as the greatest ever but yes it's complicated now.

Nadal owns Fed
Djokovic owns Nadal

I wonder who has a winning record vs Djoko?

I really like Djokovic and yes he's by far the greatest player in the world right now but he's still absolutely no where near Nadal and Federer over the years. Even if he has a run of going the whole season unbeaten but then fails to win more than 5-6 Slams (very unlikely) he will be remembered as having had the best season ever in the history of tennis but still probably not the greatest ever.

H2H records matter but well Davydenko owns Nadal on Hard Courts but he's not better than him because of that.

I agree, we'll see how long he remains motivated once he gets that World no.1 spot and experiences a couple of defeats. Nonetheless I find it enjoyable and thoroughly deserved to see him catching hold of a piece of the cake in these exceptionally competitive days for men's tennis

Dare I ask why you are such a hardcore Nadal fan? Is it just the way he plays, or might there be some geopolitical feel involved, Nadal embodying the emerging power against the traditionally dominant European (ie Federer) a bit like India since the turn of the century? :D

Well now some of you are going well over the top with the Djokovic praise. Doesn't deserve to be mentioned in the same breath as Federer overall. Incredible year so far though.

That is a partly how it all started :D

I remember watching Nadal play Federer at Miami back when he was 16 or 17 in around 2004. Fed was World Number One and far too dominant as always and this kid managed to beat him in Straight sets in his match vs The Great Swiss. Later that year he beat Roddick as well when Spain won the Davis Cup. He was outside the top 50 at tha time.

That's the moment since when I've supported him. He looked special at that time but I honestly never imagined he'd go on to win 9 Slams and all surfaces.

He was the Underdog who took on the Giant and won :D

Oh and as for the Number One ranking, it's only a matter of time before Djokovic gets it. However he's going to have a VERY hard time holding onto it next year with the crazy amount of points he has to defend.

True, Djoko still has a long way to go.. he's shown he can produce a phenomenal level of tennis but Fed and Nadal done it over an extended period. He has to do the same and rack up the Grand Slams on a consistent basis.

Bloody hell Fed is at 14/1 to win the French Open

When's the last time that happened?

I quite agree. He has many years of consistent awesomeness like Federer to accomplish before he can be regarded anywhere close to him.
He has a long way to go before he's held in the same breadth as Rafa or Agassi as well.

My name is Novak Nole Novace Djokovic, Loyal servant to the land of Serbia. Son to a boring father, son to a crazy mother. And I will become #1, in this life or the next.

Legend. I would just like to say feck you to the idiot who ripped it out of me years ago when I said Nole is a potential #1.

Nole always had a strong mentality, but it was never consistent. He would at times fight like a maniac to win, but lose with something trivial. Now he is able to keep fighting throughout and when you add this mental strength with his ability to win from anywhere on the court - well you have a complete player, and one which will be very difficult to stop.
