Tennis Thread 2011

Now the Era of the Djoko begins. No one can stop him now except Federer of all people. Strange how that sound.

Fed? With that weak backhand of his Djoko will thrash the living daylights out of him. The two people who have looked the best against him on clay have been Bellucci and Andy Murray. It's a shame RG is a Grand Slam or Murray might just have done it.

If Federer plays at his best (unlikely as that is), he'll tonk Djokovic.

IF IF IF.

If Djokovic plays to his maximum, Federer gets blown off the court.

Years ago at the US Opens, Djokovic would have chances to beat Federer but would choke. That was his biggest problem, and as good as Federer was then a lot of his wins against Djokovic were games that Djokovic should have put away - but a win is a win and you can't begrudge Fed's winning record vs Nole.

I agree, we'll see how long he remains motivated once he gets that World no.1 spot and experiences a couple of defeats. Nonetheless I find it enjoyable and thoroughly deserved to see him catching hold of a piece of the cake in these exceptionally competitive days for men's tennis

Dare I ask why you are such a hardcore Nadal fan? Is it just the way he plays, or might there be some geopolitical feel involved, Nadal embodying the emerging power against the traditionally dominant European (ie Federer) a bit like India since the turn of the century? :D

umm isn't nadal european too? and comes from a richer tennis country than switzerland?

There's no if. Federer's maximum has 16 grandslam titles. Djokovic's maximum has won him 2 so far. Long way to go to match Nadal forget Federer.

Federer's peak was 04-07 IMO. Not seen a better tennis player than the player he was then.

Of course there is. Right now in a 1 vs 1 if Djokovic plays to his maximum, Federer won't beat him... as has been shown the last few encounters. We'll see if it changes on grass.

Your argument is completely different, nowehere am I saying that Djokovic has overtaken Federer's status because obviously he has a shit load more Grand Slams to win.

I did say 'Federer at his best'. I don't think anyone can touch him when he's at his best.

It's rather unfair to compare them when Djokovic is playing the best tennis of his life and Federer has declined drastically.

My, how I'd love just ONE more year of vintage Fed.

Except Nadal did touch and beat Federer at his best. He galloped all those GS in absence of proper competition, a luxury neither Nadal or Novak have been afforded.

I sort of agree with that. Fed's greatest competition was the unbelievably one dimensional Andy Roddick while Nadal at his best has had to deal with Fed and Djoko has had to deal with BOTH Fed and Nadal.

Sure Fed will go down as one of the greatest but really his peak coincided with quite a shit period in mens tennis. Federer, Roddick and....that's it (Hewitt was already on the decline)

Nadal only beat Federer in the French Open in Grandslams back then (04-07). Till then he had beaten Nadal twice in Wimbledon finals and lost to him twice in French Open finals.

I'm not suggesting the competition wasn't a tad poor when Federer was at his best. It is true. But I believe those 4 years from him is the best tennis I've seen from anyone. It's just an opinion. I felt a decline in his game gradually since then and it's told in terms of results as well. Losing to random chaps every now and then is something Federer would never do back then.

It's also worth noting that at that point Nadal had played something like a total of 20 matches on grass in his career whereas Fed has trained on clay as well since he was young ;)

That's true. I remember back in 2004 and 2005 especially I think Nadal, Safin and Gasquet were the only people to beat him.

That's true as well. I'm not suggesting nadal was at his best then. Just saying those three or four years were fed's peak years.

Really great to see Djoko back to his very best. Makes things a lot more interesting. Murray really should have defeated him and this is a great sign for Murray and on clay too. He can't win the French in my opinion but he can certainly make great progress this year. His belief is back.

He's beaten just 1 Top 10 player on clay. It'll be fairly amazing if he even manages to make it to the semis but I hope he can take out Djoko!

I know footballers aren't smart but...

Andy Murray :

Can anyone explain what a derivative is? My friend dani has international finance and marketing degree and thinks its a biscuit....

So sounds like its some sort of financial instrument not something dani can dunk in his tea...

Good god.

Djokovic has been playing great but aside from the Oz Open, he's played best out of 3 sets in all his wins. I think Nadal and Federer are usually much harder to beat in best of 5 sets. I would put Nadal as the favourite for RG still and I think IF Roger can get back to anywhere near his best he would still have a great chance at Wimbledon. At the moment I think Murray is way too inconsistent to be in the running.

I was so wrong

Djoko did attack the Fed backhand but he defended brilliantly. Fed's backhand will be tested more against Nadal's top spinning balls though.

Federer was amazing in this match but the key was his serve, as shown with a fecking ace on match point...

Djokovic deserves massive respect from clawing his way back to serving for the second. I've no doubt in my mind if he got that he would have won the match from there.

I genuinely hate that french crowd...

Lastly, what a fecking amazing run by Djokovic, it's a shame he couldn't hand on for one game, but that #1 title is imminent.

why btw?

Against Gasquet they booed Djokovic, they booed him again today at some point in the match... feck them.

That's odd. I didn't think he did anything to deserve that.

Surprised by how much they love Federer.

I agree. It's the worst crowd in tennis. Except Fed and the French players they boo everyone. Pathetic

Maybe I can relate, Djokovic is a great great player, I know he is very emotional and passionate, but sometimes his stares look and chest pumping is a annoying especially after making his opponents wait and wait wait for a serve when he is in trouble. It will take a while for people to warm up to him, he needs a good PR team, they have started very well in the way they are presenting him to the public. Like two years ago, it even looked like he was taking on the crowd with some of his angry stares at them after winning points.
He might be a good guy, but I just don't like him yet. When I used to play tennis, I hated everything that Djokovic does when my opponents did them, time wasting when I have break points and stuff.
So in short, i think his style robs people the wrong way. It will change though.

Really? fecking really? People just get up and type any shit they want. What do you know about tennis lad?

fecking hell.

"No one can stop him" was a massive overstatement and you know it. Novak was just a player on a really really hot streak. Yes, Federer was eventually the one who beat him but that doesn't mean that others cannot beat him. Nadal certainly can and so can a lot of top players.

Damn, nice recovery, or I may have misconstrue what your meant. I thought the horse shit was addressed to the fact that Federer could not beat Djokovic. Sorry if I misunderstood you.

No problem. Yes I definitely did not mean that. Federer can obviously beat Novak on his day. But so can Rafa, Murray, Del Potro and a lot of other top guys.

My objection was the "No one can stop him" part of the post.

Anyone watching the Queens final? Come on Tsonga!
