2 Break points Rafa. Lets see how he wastes them this time!
So Nadal wins 5-7 6-1 6-3. Federer did well but Nadal really should have won this in straight sets. Yet don't know how he managed to lose that 1st set. Anyway Federer played better than he has been off late but I feel this was his best chance to beat Nadal on Clay as Madrid really suits the hard court specialists a lot due to the conditions. Not quite so sure Fed will come this close to Rafa on the slower courts of Rome and Paris.
Anyway a potential Nadal Djoko final tomorrow. Hopefully it's 3rd time lucky for Nadal this season!
Federer can't maintain his level for any length of time now. That's why I can't see him winning a Slam without a favourable draw.
Why?
No discredit to Federer but Nadal really threw away that 1st set imo. Comfortably up and then started throwing away chances though Fed did really well to come back in it.
Anyway as Nadal said, it wasn't the best match these two have played. Just too many mistakes!
It's a bit like Federer throwing away the other two isn't it?
Basically both played okay tennis today with many errors but for Nadal it's not the norm whereas for Federer these days it very much is.
Djokovic wins 7-5 6-4. Not really surprised by that. Djokovic is playing tennis from a different planet right now and Nadal had no answer to that. Still disappointed by the lack of fight shown by Nadal and the defensive tactics but Djokovic is just too good. He's going to be World Number One very very soon.
However I do believe we'll see a much better Nadal at Rome and RG. Madrid is as close to hard court as you can get and he struggles there. He's lost here before, lost here today and will quite probably lose here again.
It's not even funny the amount of points Djokovic is going to be defending next year
Haha that is so true, I haven't even thought about that.
Madrid has never been Nadal's favourite clay-court venue because of the faster pace caused by the high altitude, and he will hope that conditions favour him more at next week's Rome Masters and, more importantly, Roland Garros later this month.
"I came up against a great player obviously - he's having a monster year," said Nadal. "He was better, you have to accept that."
"The number 1 ranking is not in danger - it's finished. Let's not lie to ourselves, that's the reality."
Forget the grasp on his mental game. Even without that he's easily going to take #1 because Nadal just has far too many points to defend and Djoko just keeps winning.
However he's going to be losing a lot of points next year!
Oh he absolutely has grown mentally as well but what I meant is that the Number 1 is coming to him anyway now. And to be honest I though vuc meant that he's got the grasp on Nadal. Only now did I properly see what he wrote so yeah a bit of a mistake.
Djokovic is on another planet to everyone else this year. It's scary to watch. Will be interesting if he can keep this up at RG and Wimby.
