2 Break points Rafa. Lets see how he wastes them this time!

That Nadal shot was in. Fed should have just played on really. Nadal 4-0 up.

Not surprisingly Madrid was the place where he lost a set last year as well. That time it was Almagro.

Nadal with a break in the 3rd set for 3-1 now. Please don't mess this up now Rafa!

He took the 2nd set 6-1 btw.

So Nadal's game this. But very encouraging from Federer. The magic is still there. When he turns it on I don't think anyone can live with him. But then those unforced errors are still litered all over his game. He goes through spell of losing lots of points out of his self created mistakes. But at least the class in parts is still there. So I still have hope for more grandslams as long as that's there.

So Nadal wins 5-7 6-1 6-3. Federer did well but Nadal really should have won this in straight sets. Yet don't know how he managed to lose that 1st set. Anyway Federer played better than he has been off late but I feel this was his best chance to beat Nadal on Clay as Madrid really suits the hard court specialists a lot due to the conditions. Not quite so sure Fed will come this close to Rafa on the slower courts of Rome and Paris.

Anyway a potential Nadal Djoko final tomorrow. Hopefully it's 3rd time lucky for Nadal this season!

Why?

Yes it's hard to see him winning a Slam. There are still the odd moments of magic but he can't really do it over 5 sets vs Djokovic/Nadal. His best chance of winning a Slam is hoping he plays Murray in the final.

Federer can't maintain his level for any length of time now. That's why I can't see him winning a Slam without a favourable draw.

Therein lies the problem. But the quality is there in patches, so I see no reason why there can't be a day where those 15 minute bursts of awfulness don't come. It is possible. So I can see him beating anyone on his day. And really, he's good enough to beat most anyway. He just needs a couple of days like that in the semis and finals to win a grand slam. Very possible but yeah, it won't happen with major slumps during matches.

No discredit to Federer but Nadal really threw away that 1st set imo. Comfortably up and then started throwing away chances though Fed did really well to come back in it.

Anyway as Nadal said, it wasn't the best match these two have played. Just too many mistakes!

It's a bit like Federer throwing away the other two isn't it?

Basically both played okay tennis today with many errors but for Nadal it's not the norm whereas for Federer these days it very much is.

Exactly which is why the collapse in the first set was strange to watch.

The problem with Federer now is the errors as you said. He needs to somehow keep the error count low but it's been happening for over a year now so I don't know how he can control it.

Anyway as for Rolland Garros I can't see him winning. It's hard to maintain your level for 5 sets vs Nadal or even Djokovic.

You're talking as if he's some chap whose never been able to maintain consistency over a full game in his career. This is Roger Federer. Yes he's got this problem in his game these days and it could well be one of things that stays with him till his fine career comes to a close. But given that it isn't any ordinary player there's also a chance that he's able to pull it together for the odd grandlsam or two, if not a year or two. I do think it's unlikely given his age will start telling soon, but it's not impossible. Not for one of the greatest ever.

Oh he's had a fantastic career but he's touched 30 now and it's not that easy to keep up with people 5-7 younger than you. Even Nadal finds it difficult to keep in touch with Djokovic this season so it'll be even more difficult for Fed.

None of the big hitters are scared of Federer anymore which showed in the wins for the likes of Sod and Berdych last year and if he does survive the floaters in the draw he's got the probability of playing Djoko and Nadal back to back to lift a Slam.

Bellucci really has come out of nowhere. Took out Murray and Berdych and doing very well vs Djoko till now. He's got a monster of a serve.

And he just broke Djokovic. Bel has easily been the better player....till now.

Bloody hell. Some absolutely phenomenal tennis from Bellucci. Was triple break point down on his serve. Saved them all and then broke Novak to love in the next game. He's a set and a break up and playing possibly the best tennis I've seen anyone play on Clay since Rafa.

Can Djoko's run finally end?

So Djokovic goes on to win it. A shame really because Bellucci had a great chance with the set and break up but he just did not have the nerves to see it out and Novak's class told in the end.

37 straight victories on clay for Nadal. 33 straight on every surface for Djokovic. And they face off tomorrow in the final. They've already played each other a massive 26 times and Djokovic leads the HC head to head 9-5 but Nadal has won every meeting on clay, though they've been tough contests.

Hopefully Nadal can assert his supremacy over Djokovic tomorrow but I think Novak has more chance of winning tomorrow vs Nadal than he will at Rome or in Paris so should be fascinating!

Bloody Hell Nadal comes back from 4-0 down in the first set and is now 4-5 down but it's on serve. Still reckon Djoko will win this. This court is really really fast.

Djoko takes the first set 7-5.

Nadal breaks Djoko in the first game of the 2nd. He just hit a between the legs lob winner over Djoko   Shot of the year!

Djoko's playing really well and he's 7-5 4-3 up. And yes it's a best of 3. At this rate it's not going to go to a 3rd set!

Djoko is going World #1 pretty soon.

Both Federer and Nadal are now Djokovic's bitch.

Djokavic wins!

Haven't followed tennis since the US Open last year but I hear Novak's had a great year so far. I always thought if he improved his mentality he could challenge the likes of Roger & Rafa and he seems to be doing that now.

Djokovic wins 7-5 6-4. Not really surprised by that. Djokovic is playing tennis from a different planet right now and Nadal had no answer to that. Still disappointed by the lack of fight shown by Nadal and the defensive tactics but Djokovic is just too good. He's going to be World Number One very very soon.

However I do believe we'll see a much better Nadal at Rome and RG. Madrid is as close to hard court as you can get and he struggles there. He's lost here before, lost here today and will quite probably lose here again.

It's not even funny the amount of points Djokovic is going to be defending next year

Haha that is so true, I haven't even thought about that.

He's going to have to take part in (and win) absolutely everything in the first 5 months next year to not lose a single point

This system is just so stupid.

If Djokovic plays this way it won't be the last time you'll be saying that.

I really really admire Djokovic. Great player and classy as well. A very subdued celebration compared to the usual.

Nadal, gracious though he was in defeat, looked super pissed today. A pissed Nadal on clay with a point to prove...it's going to be fun hopefully.

Madrid has never been Nadal's favourite clay-court venue because of the faster pace caused by the high altitude, and he will hope that conditions favour him more at next week's Rome Masters and, more importantly, Roland Garros later this month.

"I came up against a great player obviously - he's having a monster year," said Nadal. "He was better, you have to accept that."
"The number 1 ranking is not in danger - it's finished. Let's not lie to ourselves, that's the reality."

That Trophy

Djokovic! What a legend, I actually thought he would win today - didn't expect 4-0 to begin with, but the thing is he can beat you from any position on the court.

Nadal is incredible, but now that Nole has a grasp on his mental game I can see him taking #1.

Forget the grasp on his mental game. Even without that he's easily going to take #1 because Nadal just has far too many points to defend and Djoko just keeps winning.

However he's going to be losing a lot of points next year!

Without that? You don't think Djokavic has got the mentality now of a top player? You simply can't be this good without being mentally strong, at least for that particular time frame.

Oh he absolutely has grown mentally as well but what I meant is that the Number 1 is coming to him anyway now. And to be honest I though vuc meant that he's got the grasp on Nadal. Only now did I properly see what he wrote so yeah a bit of a mistake.

Djokovic is on another planet to everyone else this year. It's scary to watch. Will be interesting if he can keep this up at RG and Wimby.

Oh alright then.
