Tennis Thread 2011

I am resigned to accept Djokovic as the next big thing. Did not like his antics and still don't but you have to respect greatness when you see it, the majors will be his for the next 5 years bar injuries. He can beat Nadal on any surface except the grass

Verdasco just pulled off the bottle job of a lifetime. A performance so bad that Arsenal would be proud.

From 6-2 5-4 (40-0) up and with a triple Match point....he lost to Soderling. Woeful stuff. He lost 2-6 7-5 6-4

I've just seen Nadal play the most pathetic, embarrassing and woeful set of tennis I think. He lost the 1st set ON CLAY in a tie break to some Lorenzi guy ranked 141st in the World.

He wasn't great at Monte Carlo, he was ok at Barca, poor at Madrid and this start has been shocking.

What a performance from Gasquet to take out Federer after being a set down. Too often he's chocked at crucial points in games but today he beat Fed in 2 tie breaks. Super performance.

ahh that's why he was trending on twitter.

I dont think Nadal was ever able to get into Nole's head, at any point in the match. It seems as if it was Nadal who actually completely lost the mental battle, constantly being aware he's facing a machine which Nole simply is at the moment.

Yup. Djoko was just way too good. Nadal said 2 days before the final that he knows how to play against Fed but has no idea what to do vs Djokovic.

Anyway Nadal into the semis today with a 6-1 6-3 win over Cilic. He's been improving since that disaster of a first match vs Lorenzi. He gets to keep his #1 ranking and will be Num 1 at RG. The ranking will go soon enough anyway but I just wish he can win RG and prove to be the King of Clay again.

Djokovic is scarily good. It's going to take a massive effort for anyone to beat him on any surface imo.

He just demolished Soderling 6-3 6-0.

Soderling, jus like Wawrinka last night, had good chances to break in the first set and didn't take them and then got hammered.

I don't like Murray but I'm hoping he can beat Djokovic but in this form it's pretty unlikely.

Decent match on between Djoko and Murray. Early exchange of breaks and it's 2-1 Djoko. Quality hasn't been too great but some very very long rallies.

Awful shot by Murray, needs to put shots like that away if he's to make a telling impression.

Murray's just so rubbish. He's just beaten 1 player in the Top 10 on clay apparently. And it's showing.

I know I'm a Nadal fan but I think it's good for mens tennis if Nadal wins tomorrow. If Djokovic runs away with it tomorrow as well I reckon he could go on and win the French. How do you go unbeaten till halfway through May?!

PS: Djokovic is playing the best tennis played by anyone in the last few years. He's just a bit too good.

How is this bad for mens tennis exactly?

Well not exactly bad but it would be nice if someone could come close to challenging. He's reaching frightening levels of domination. And it's not just on one surface :nervous:

Federer and Nadal have been winning grandslams for the last 200 years. It's about time, for the good of tennis, someone else takes the stage. One grandslam is the end all his domination is in terms of grandslams, which isn't actually dominant.

Murray's been very good this set. Holding serve well and now 0-30 up on Djoko's serve. Can he get the break? Doubt it..

PS: He does get it

Still needs to hold serve twice to see out the set...

Wow some incredible tennis from Murray in this set and he takes it 6-3. Djokovic has made some very uncharacteristic errors in the last few games...

Djoko breaks Murray for 3-1 and immediately Murray breaks back with 2 service return winners from 30-30. Super game from him. Wonder if this time he'll hold serve after breaking back!

Win or Lose, promising performance from the Scot.. picked up since the second set.

Holy crap. Murray from a break down to a break up

From 3-1 down to 4-3 up. 2 decent service games away from ending Novak's run!

What a volley.

I just tune in. How has Djokovic been stretched so much?

Bloody hell what a match. Djoko broke back for 4-4 and now Murray breaks back AGAIN for 5-4 and will serve for it. Incredible game. They both look dead on their feet right now. It's been tiring just to watch this game!

Murray. What a choker. Serving for it and just really throws it away with double faults and stupid errors. 30-0 up on the Djoko serve and again tries to drop shot when the court was empty. Watch him get broken and lose this now.

Whenever Nadal's rivals win a match you put it down to choking from the other guy.

I know throw the term around rather loosely but seriously 5-4 30-15 up on your serve and then you go on to double fault twice and try to drop shot when the far court is empty?

And congrats to Djokovic. This guy is just crazy. His unbelievable run just does not end

Tired or not I can see him beating Nadal tomorrow.

Djokovic and Nadal have played in the final of every ATP (non Slam) tournament they've played this year

Nadal will win tomorrow. Both Murray and Djokovic looked like they were about to collapse at the end of that.

I reckon a final between the two could be a lot of fun at the french.

Although I will still hope Federer silently makes his way through to the latter stages and maybe turns it on.

I hope so but Djokovic has gotten into Nadal's head. RN just can't figure out how to play against Djoko which is why I can see him winning again.

You reckon the unbeaten run could start becoming a burden for Djoko after a while? I remember when Nadal's 81 run game was ended by Fed at Hamburg (i think) , he almost looked relieved. Ofcourse Djokovic won't want to lose but the longer the run goes on he might start to show pressure. Today's the first time I've seen him actually get very frustrated and even show some negative body language during a match in a long long time.

Stats: First time in ATP Masters 1000 history (since '90), same duo will play in 4 finals during year. No player has d. #Nadal in 4 finals in row.

congratulations

I think so. I think it might actually be better for Djokovic to lose tomorrow so that he doesn't carry this hype with him to the French Open. With these runs, for some time you feed off it and after that it becomes a burden. And he won't need that added pressure at Roland Garros.

I can see him winning tomorrow but given there's no real gap of a day or two, and the amount this match took out of Djokovic as well as that fall of his, Nadal has to be favorite. For Djokovic to win he'd have to win it in 2. If it goes beyond two, Nadal should be in far better shape.

Fully agree. He wins tomorrow and he'll be a firm favourite for the French Open imo. But he's handled the pressure really well till now. Ever since that USO semi final vs Fed when he saved the two match points, his mental strength has been supreme. He just never looks rattled now.

Didnt realize the final match is in less than 4 hours. Cant see Novak beating Rafa today, he's probably too exhausted at this point.

Djokovic has shown great character this season. And the form he's in it wouldn't really surprise me if he won this. And the rain and the extra rest will have no doubt helped. Hoping for a great final and a Nadal win. 4 losses back to back would be a bit too much :nervous:
