Tennis 2024

It's fun, but utterly meaningless and confected. Which is why I never quite get around to watching it.

The players seem to take it seriously, which is what mostly matters, producing many great matches year in year out.

Plus you get to see partnerships that you'll never see on the tour.

They do, after a fashion. Some of it is quite knowing in my opinion, with the wraparound filming etc. and the massive pay cheque helps, too.

Ultimately, though, people playing individual sports quite often love playing in team events like this (see McIlroy crying 45 different times at every Ryder Cup). It’s a fun diversion.

The Laver Cup is probably the most underrated tournament...on the CAF at least. It always delivers, yet few seem to follow it.

Anyway, congrats. Team Europe for snatching the cup after some exciting matches over all three days.
It can be fun to watch but to me it's just a glorified exhibition and I don't really have an interest in watching exhibition tennis.

It's definitely the best exhibition tennis event out there, though I do find it a little annoying that they try to make it seem like it matters.

Far East season and then the finals in Turin (going there for one afternoon session, hopefully)!

The World Anti-Doping Agency has appealed against the decision to clear Jannik Sinner of blame after he twice tested positive for a banned substance.

...

I think another case of why doping cases are so messy to deal with. The will be differences in cases, so a blanket rule wouldn't make sense but the process is unclear and messy. Thought it was over, but maybe not.

Even if the appeal is successful, surely there will be a counter appeal by Sinner's team.

This is playbook quango’s time and there is only one outcome once it starts, whether a fine, a slap on the wrist or something hevier it depends on… who knows!?

Yeah, the "no negligence" sentence when a member of his team was carrying the fecking cream was ridiculous, come on

Figure it's gonna be like a 6 months ban in the end, imo

Thanks to the magic of smart working I'm watching the first big Sincaraz final

And it appears physicists must add a new fundamental law: Sinner can't lose tie-breaks

Alcaraz can break physics though

Psychedelic match

Just a word of thanks for this post.

I switched on Sky tennis yesterday - Sinner was playing Alcaraz and the third set had just started. Now, I only ever really watch live sport, but it took me a couple of minutes to realise that I was watching a recording and that was long enough to get me hooked on the match.

As I hadn't seen the result and your post had been kind of ambiguous, I was able to declare the match "live for me" and enjoy the final in blissful ignorance

The lesson being never back Carlitos into a corner. That's when he remembers he's actually omnipotent

Arnaldi playing some great stuff against Meddy now. Third set

Rune loses yet again to a top 10 opponent. At what point does he concede that he's found his level?

It's so sad, isn't it? People who don't follow sports will never understand what a truly special thing the Federer-Nadal rivalry was.

Took the game to another level. Peak Nadal was just a monster. The greatest rival of both Djokovic and Federer.

Unbelievable player. Skill and mentality wise out of this world. Loved his rivalry with Roger. Dark night ending of that Wimbledon final was epic.

What a player! So sad. Thank you for all the amazing entertainment and excitement over so many years.

This has been coming since last year but it still hurts. It feels surreal we'll never see him play again after November.

End of an era. What a player he was
Almost: Djokovic is still playing, although he may not stay around for long. Federer, Nadal, Djokovic and Serena Williams played at the same time. One of them remains. Hard to imagine.

I am a Federer fan, and never really liked Nadal’s style. But what a legend he is. These players are unreplacable. I wish him the best moving forward.

Line judges are to disappear from Wimbledon after 147 years as the All England Club will adopt electronic line calling from 2025.

The technology will be in place for all qualifying and main draw matches and replace the judges who were responsible for calling shots 'out' and 'fault' on a serve.

The Australian Open and US Open adopted electronic line calling in 2021 and 2022 respectively.

It doesn't hurt as much since it's been coming for a while. Still :wenger:

My favourite player ever

Meanwhile, Alcaraz is losing in straight sets to Machac....

So is Nadal 2nd or 3rd on the goat list?

Personally I think he's easily 2nd. The head to head, the more slams, the way he basically made the one handed backhand extinct by top spinning the shit out of Federers backhand.

A good decision - I wonder if/when RG will adopt it, though it would be a bit more contentious on clay, given players would no doubt be arguing some decisions based on the ball mark.

Personally I have him 2nd, though I think the gap between him and Federer is a lot closer than it is between Nadal or Federer with Djokovic.

Was waiting for it and yet it's still sad.

He was so special to watch. No other player has given me as much excitement as watching Rafa

When you watch him for two decades, recent years tend to overshadow the older years but what an astonishing player he was back in the day. Watching all the videos really hits you in the feels.

If you made a list of the top 25 tennis matches ever, I think Nadal features on them more than any player:

2007 Wimbledon F v Federer
2008 Wimbledon F v Federer
2009 Australian Open SF v Verdasco
2009 Australian Open F v Federer
2012 Australian Open F v Djokovic
2013 Roland Garros SF v Djokovic
2017 Australian Open F v Federer
2018 Wimbledon SF v Djokovic
2022 Australian Open F v Medvedev

These are some of the most memorable games off the top of my head.

Legend is an understatement, probably the second best/greatest tennis player of all time.

If his body co-operated a bit more, what could have been..

All the best Rafa.

Was just thinking this, and yeah

The fact he lost 3 games(DVerev this year doesn't count!) In 20 years at RG is just

Winning a single point on clay against him was harder than beating Real Madrid in a CL final. For all that Djokovic is the better/greater overall player, the correct answer to the best tennis player of all time is Nadal on clay. Nothing even remotely comparable

I'm, not ok

Nole is in China to fecking win :o

Holy shit this might be the single most fictional game I've ever seen. This isn't real, come on

Poor Fritz

Nole vs Sinner final might break reality

Sinner beats Djokovic pretty comfortably in the final, 7-6, 6-3. Has now won four out of the last five again him, all in this past year.

Nole servebotted his way through the first 5 games, then he lost his serve for the tie-break and the first 3 games of the second and he wasn't competitive against Sinner when he wasn't a servebot

that said he also looked to me like he had physical issues moving to his right. Still, a statement win for Sinner this, in this fashion. And still unbeaten on fast courts this year

Nadal Still is easily good enough to be Top 5 player. Can't beat the big guys but better than the rest. It was a good final match for the rivalry.

This is a joke right?
