Tennis 2024

Playing through a meniscus tear at that age... might be the end?

He had surgery today and is expected to miss Wimbledon and focus on the Olympics. I don't think it's that huge of a deal. His form this season has been the bigger problem.

Expect him to come out in killer-robot mode for the Olympics, then might hang it up if he wins that. His team admitted the biggest issue this year was a lack of motivation

Sinner vs Alcaraz, hopefully we get another USO22/Miami23 classic. Much will depend on conditions I feel, as I can't see Jannik giving Carlos too much trouble on the glacially slow night courts of last week.

Other side, Alex De Minaur, the world is with you mate!

As the Sinner/Alcaraz half of the draw has played first, I believe that will be the first SF, so it will definitely be in the day. I think the second semi-final will also be in the day too, so today is the last of the night session.

What a win for Andreeva! Huge chance for Paolini and Andreeva to make the RG final (and get thumped by Swiatek )

Shame Coco is on Igas side but love these upsets, especially Mirra, another breakthrough win.

Very unlike Zverev to see out a win professionally without throwing away sets.

I see that both are scheduled at 2:30pm according to Soccerstand, are they really gonna play at the same time? Can't remember how it usually is but aren't they both playing on Philippe Chatrier?

Shame that Alcaraz vs Sinner is the first one, would've liked to see that one in full tonight.

So yeah, hoping it takes a few hours that I'll be home from work to catch the ending.

Sinner was 6:2, 2:0, but since then Alcaraz has cut out a lot of his errors and won the second 6:3. Really dominated it once he got going. Whole new match now.

Players can lose without choking.

Yeah, dunno if it’s the fed/nadal/djoko tribalism that has infected people but there is such a culture of just ragging on top top tennis players.

even your Ruuds, Medvedevs, Dimis etc who couldn’t get out from the shadow of the most golden generation in tennis history got and get such dismissive commentary on here.

it’s pretty spoiled/laughable.

Not to mention these guys are 22/21, they are actually showing a great deal of maturity and mental strength.

Way too many unforced errors by Alcaraz after he went 2-1 up in that third set.

People don't know what choking even means anymore.

Either way, Sinner has ludicrous reach, and is there any other event that regularly somehow ends up with it's prime matchup always seemingly in the semi than Roland Garros? Though I guess the counter here is one of these vs Djokovic was the true prime attraction. But RG ending up with wild semi's has historically been way too common, by fluke of course, but still

Annnnnd.... it's delivered, a five setter, belter of a 4th set that. Both played some terrific stuff.

At times, yet. Probably not consistently enough and the momentum swings were quite wild, but like others wrote, they are very young and haven't been at those stages that many times.

These two are far more aggressive than either of Djokovic or Nadal, so if the direct comparison for what's terrific is with them two having massive long rallies, then I don't think that's fair.

Mind you, Nadal-Djokovic 2013 is the greatest match ever on this surface.

Also, am I alone in finding it mad how Alcaraz's hair doesn't seem to have an ounce of sweat on it? Kid looks like he's coasting, which is mad.

This match has been far below the usual Sinner Carlos levels. A bit disappointing to be honest.

Yeah, idk about this one. Depends what you mean by aggressive.
Tbf, Sinner and Carlos are probably atleast 10x as aggressive as Rafa and Novak ever were. There's a reason Carlos' game sprays as many errors also as it does because he's hyper aggressive and loves to go all out for winners most of the game. I love watching these two play but I much preferred Rafa vs Novak because their rallies were a lot more than just bashing the ball as hard as you can.

If we're talking wanting to hit through your opponent and end the rally as soon as possible, then yeah, they're probably more aggressive. Rafa and Novak are a lot more measured in their approach. There's a lot more depth to their games. If we're talking ball striking, I'd say Nadal is up there with them, but imparts a lot more spin, instead of just flat power.

I also think there's a recency bias when it comes to Novak. Between 2011-2014, Novak was monstrously aggressive. The only player who made defense an impossibility for Nadal at the time.
I don't think these two compete with that version.

Carlos wins. Super job from him to come back from where he was in that second set. Can't wait to see these two face off at the USO.

Purely in terms of an entertaining final, I hope Zverev wins the other semifinal. Carlos vs Ruud would be just way too one sided.

Too bad, would have liked Sinner to advance. Exciting match though, if not that high level throughout.

I don't think Sinner is very good on clay so this was a very good tournament for him. He'll probably still be kicking himself for letting this opportunity go though.

Yup, that's what I did mean in terms of aggression. And I agree, Rafa and Novak always have been more measured and tactical in their approaches and I think it had a lot more variety and quality than what we see these days.

I do think these two on hard courts are extremely entertaining though.

Alcaraz takes it, but what a scrap. Strange match really, such quality in some of the plays immediately followed by errors and inconsistency. Tough match to call for most of the games though.

It does feel like we'll be watching these two fighting it out on a regular basis now.

The errors is what really spoils the matches for me personally but I guess that is what you'll get when these guys just go all out for winners and with their aggression levels.

These two are generally the best players on tour at the moment, but that was a good match given they'd had so much interrupted court time prior to RG. Netiher was really in peak form.

Sinner looked unusually frustrated towards the end as well.

Not really actually. I love this match up and every match these two play is phenomenal but the level today just hasn't been close to their best.
Easier to forget now but 2 weeks ago neither was even sure they could be at RG in the first place. Sinner was shattered in the 5th
