Tennis 2023

I was at Ashe watching Djokovic vs Fritz and Ostapenko vs Coco. It was brutally hot - brutally. It felt like being in Sauna for 3+ hours. If you are leaning forward for 5+ minutes, you can't safely lean back as the seat gets so hot. Crazy hot conditions!!!

Coco Gauff winning the 1st set by 6-4 and now leading 1-0 over Karolína Muchová. But the match is suspended because some random asshole (or bunch of assholes) is doing God knows what and refuses to feck off. What I do not understand is why the stadium staff have to negotiate with that(those) person(s) when it would be far more simple to send NYPD cops to remove them ASAP.

Seriously, I don't care how much money one paid for a ticket, I don't care what is your motivation for such behavior, and I don't care who you are. If you can't behave, you deserve to get kicked out, arrested and finally banned for life.

He apparently glued his shoes to the court.

To be fair, if they just untied his laces and made him walk on the court... his feet would melt, so win win all round. Good enough punishment for me.

So the women’s final will be contested between the in-form, crowd favourite Gauff, and the incoming world no. 1 Sabalenka.

I don’t like Sabalenka at all, but credit to her for her consistency at the big tournaments this year, and for her fighting spirit after getting bagelled by Keys in the opening set. She seemed pretty clutch in big moments and when under pressure in the 2nd and 3rd sets. That’s even more impressive, given the mental frailties she has shown in previous grand slam semi-finals; against Fernandez and Swiatek during the 2 previous US Opens, and against Muchova and Jabeur at RG and Wimbledon this year.

I really hope that Gauff wins the final on Saturday though. Win or lose, she definitely looks to be on the right track given that she is only 19; she will contest her 2nd grand slam final already. I always thought that hype about her from ESPN, McEnroe, Evert since 2019 etc. should never be held against her, as that wasn’t her fault and wasn’t something that she can control. It’s not like she personally was predicting that she’d win a truck load of grand slams.

As expected, very comfortable for Novak so far. Even if he doesn't win another game, it's a great tournament for Shelton and a good learning experience that he probably wasn't expecting to get so soon.

I think the other SF might be a straight forward one too for Alcaraz.

Medvedev vs Djokovic is probably a more interesting and balanced match up and while I think Alcaraz would also beat Shelton easily, it would have probably been a fun match.

You can only beat what's in front of you but Taylor Fritz being the highest seeded player you face on the way to a Grand Slam is an astonishing indictment of where men's tennis is right now outside of Novak and Carlos. Really hope Carlos beats Medvedev so we get the blockbuster final we deserve for having to sit through these two weeks.

Shelton is a fun player to watch and unfortunately he was never going to be a match for someone as incredible as Novak. Those 143mph serves aren't half as effective vs him.

I don't know if this is something that is primarily focused on when American players are younger but how do ALL of them end up being so good on serve?

Men's tennis is really in a bit of a meh period. I'm not even really watching the US open this year.

I've caught some matches here and there, especially Novak and Carlos but yeah, there's just a serious lack of depth beyond those two. I try to watch with an open mind but the lack of quality really doesn't help. All eggs in the big final basket though!

Yeah, hoping we get Carlos against Novak in the final. The women's draw has probably been a bit more interesting but still pretty flat despite he Gauff story.

On paper it looks like we'll be getting two very good finals at the end of it at least.

I mean, it's not even the easiest run to the final/title in the past few years... Nadal owns that right. The US is historic for easy runs though, end of season fatigue and the heat.

But yeah, stunningly easy either way for Novak.

Yeah I will definitely tune in for repeat of the Wimbledon final. If Carlos does it again I feel the big 3 era might finally really end. Just hope someone else steps up with him.

I'd actually give it to Djokovic in 2016. He lost the final to Stan but he had 3 walkovers enroute to the final. In terms of title winner, Nadal 2017 owns it hands down though.

I think there's very little chance of Novak vs Carlos disappointing, tbh. The nerves that he faced in the RG match seem a thing of the past given their two matches since then and both are in pretty good form. I'd be quite surprised if isn't a 4 hour + slugfest. Ofcourse, need Carlos to do his bit later today.

For sure, Nadal's gotten the easiest finalist in Anderson but I was talking about the path to the final, not the final itself. Del Po and Berretini were both far superior to anything Novak has faced this tournament.

Medvedev is the only one apart from these two who still looks like he can regularly get to semi finals of Slams. Zverev, Rublev and Tsitspas - the lesser said the better. Just don't think Medvedevs game matches up very well with Carlos from what we've seen in their matches so far this year.

Blake Shelton making a late comeback.
One of the most popular predictions on Twitter for this match seemed like straight sets for Novak but the third to go to a tie-break. Think that'll happen here.

Would be quite typical of Novak to save that set point and then break immediately.

Got a lot of respect for Shelton here today. Could have easily folded but he's hung on and fought in this match unlike what a lot of other higher ranked players would have.

Novak so average in this 3rd set. I hope this is temporary and not something he will carry into Sunday if he makes it to Sunday.

Match was already won so he did get a bit complacent/tight and credit to Shelton, who played well and didn't give up. But yup, he'll need to do a lot better if he faces Carlos.

Why the hell is he mimicking the celebration

Surprisingly unclassy from Novak there. It's the last thing you ever expect to see from in defeat. Fairly cold handshake too.

Because he played against entire stadium in that 3rd set. His first serve miss was applauded that entire set. That sucks. Wimbledon crowd would never do that, but US crowd does it and it is pathetic.

Never watched Novak vs Federer at Wimbledon, eh?

I love it  kinda mean but I guess he doesn’t really like him.
It was absolutely hilarious but also so unlike Novak who is usually so gracious and classy. But it'll make for some amazing GIFs.

I think it's funny

Personally I like the no fecks given attitude from Djokovic at times.

Shelton is just a kid but those kind of atmosphere's are difficult to play in and Novak time and time again rises to the occasion.

The reason he did it is because he's naturally a dorky douche, and you should know that by now. You can't train that out of a person however much media training you give them.

Nothing wrong with it either for me, it gives him character.

It was absolutely hilarious but I also feel these kind of things give him the kind of reputation which doesn't make him as likeable as he wants to be. Loved the super cold handshake as well.

Been a while since I saw such a short exchange at the end after the match. Didn't even look like they said any words to each other beyond good game

Maybe it's just me but Djokovic has been very average in the last 2 matches I've watched him it looks like hes really struggling with the heat, not that it seems to matter as he hasn't been up against much.

If its still very hot for the final on Sunday and he's facing Alcaraz can't see Djokovic outlasting him.

If I was Medo and Alcaraz I would be excited for Sunday. This is not AO form.

Did they even say any words to each other? All I saw was Novak hit his racket on the net-cord before very very briefly shaking Shelton's hand.
