Tennis 2023

Djokovic still 1.3 favorite to win.

He'll win this 6-2 in the 5th.

Djokovic in slight trouble. Down a set, and down a break in 2nd set. Good time to put some money on Djokovic or maybe after 2nd set is done
You never get great odds even when Djoko is 2 down, sadly.

I never thought that Djokovic would lose for a second when he was 2 sets to love down, as we've seen that script many times before. I believe that only Ilie Nastase is the only player on record to win more 5 set matches than him.

I guess in terms of his title chances, he doesn't want to be spending too much time on the court round by round ahead of the latter stages, but he has won numerous grand slams before after 5 set scares along the way.

Sinner just hit a 71mph serve, which barely made it over the net. Brought to mind one of the US Open's great moments.

I genuinely still cannot get over how awful a final this was. One of the all time greats.

Sinner looking very out of sorts against Wawrinka. Double faulted to get broken to lose the second set. He was practically chasing the ball toss on his second serve.

Still got the win but I get the feeling his time will soon be up if he does not change gears.

Thought he would be a competitor to Alcaraz but as things stand, the likes of Mensik will get there first.

Yes it was dire stuff. I was looking forward to the prospect of a new grand slam champion and a long-awaited first 90s born grand slam champion on the men's side, but the quality was so bad.

I did think that Thiem was comfortably the most talented 90s born player, ahead of Medvedev, Zverev, Dmitrov etc.

Draper's run to the 4th round has been a very pleasant surprise. Hopefully he can put in a good showing against Rublev.

Assuming his run with not last too much longer, I'd personally love to see a final between Alcaraz and one of the US men from the bottom half of the draw. Sadly Djokovic might have something to say about that though.

Why do you not like the Djoker?

Gauff making a lot of errors in this 2nd set.

She needs to reset and start playing some consistent tennis in the decider.

Has done very well.

Woz has been good and Coco is definitely taking the next step but stillllll feels a little easy to put off her game.

Just 19 though, I really like watching her play.

It's very easy to forget how young she is. Looks like she'll get the win today but she's going to need to step up the level significantly against Swiatek.

Yeah, beat her in Cinci though? Or somewhere recently.

Would fancy Iga though.

She did get the win in Cinci but the H2H is still pretty lopsided in Swiatek's favour. The crowd will be behind Gauff so, just have to make sure she starts well and get the crowd into it.

Ostapenko beats world no 1 Swiatek 3-6, 6-3 6-1.

Ostapenko now leads that head to head 4-0, though the previous match was at Dubai in 2022, just before Swiatek started her monster 37 match winning streak at Doha the following week.

Swiatek's defeat means that Sabalenka will become the new world no. 1 next week. I don't like Sabalenka at all (she's my least favourite out of the current top WTA players), but well done to her, she has been very consistent at the big tournaments. And Swiatek deserves credit for holding the world no. 1 for 76 consecutive weeks, that was an impressive stint.

One thing I have noticed this season, is that Swiatek has looked increasingly 'rattled' when she has lost sets. But with the game that she has, especially on clay, I'd expect her to win more grand slam titles.

Why do you not like the Djoker?

I don't 'despise' him, but I've never really liked him that much either, due to a combination of him IMO trying too hard to be liked, me respecting his game but not finding it that exciting to watch overall (though in 2011 his ascent was brilliant), his frequent temper tantrums on the court (though I respect the fact that after defeats he has been very gracious), and his behaviour during the pandemic notably when he organised that Adria Tour.

But I give him plenty of credit where it's due and have no problems in saying that he is greater than both Federer and Nadal.

Mainly though, I want more variety and novelty in terms of top level contenders in grand slams. Last year when Nadal was the US Open and Djokovic was absent, I wanted Tiafoe to beat him in the 4th and was delighted that he did, mainly for the novelty factor.

Fritz is a very consistent tennis player, but unfortunately for him he has not enough tricks on his locker to beat Novax. Don't even need to see the game.

Novak hasn't been great this USO so could definitely see Fritz win a set, or even two but yep, don't see him winning the match. Unfortunately, Carlos (and Medvedev on his day) are the only players who possess the mental strength and the game to stay with and beat Novak across five sets.

Keys was good value for that win but really disappointing showing from Pegula.

Keys was good value for that win but really disappointing showing from Pegula.

She only hit 6 winners. She is an excellent player, but her game seems a bit too ‘basic’ (for top level professional standards) to win a grand slam. She has a tendency to be outgunned in grand slam quarter-finals (though this time she fell one round short of that) by players with more firepower (like Keys), variety (Vondrousova) or both (Swiatek). If a player like Keys is on form, there’s relatively little that she can do to stop her.

Also I wonder if her entering so many doubles events (she plays a pretty regular doubles schedule with Gauff and is also playing mixed doubles here), is hindering her in singles in terms of making that next jump.

So the men's quarter-final line-up is set:

Alcaraz vs. Zverev
Medvedev vs. Rublev
Tiafoe vs. Shelton
Djokovic vs. Fritz

Tiafoe vs. Shelton is the one I'm looking forward to the most. Tiafoe's backstory is fascinating, and it's impressive that he became a professional tennis player in the first place, let alone such a successful one.

Rublev has a 0-8 record in grand slam quarter-finals, and it would be a pretty big upset if that doesn't worsen to 0-9 tomorrow.

Zverev is by far my least favourite out of the 8 quarter-finalists. I hope he stays slamless.

So what was the phrase? I couldn't make it out on the audio.

US Open fan thrown out after using ‘most famous Hitler phrase’ against Germany’s Alexander Zverev
https://www.telegraph.co.uk/tennis/...ected-for-using-hitler-phrase-against-zverev/

EDIT: Ah
US Open ejects fan who directed Hitler regime phrase at Zverev

"He started singing the anthem of Hitler that was back in the day," Zverev explained. "It was 'Deutschland über alles,' and it was a bit too much.

"I think he was getting involved in the match for a long time, though. I don't mind it. I love when fans are loud. I love when fans are emotional. But I think me being German and not really proud of that history, it's not really a great thing to do, and I think him sitting in one of the front rows, I think a lot of people heard it. So if I just don't react, I think it's bad from my side."

Agreed, bit of a shame they meet at this stage from a yank point of view but neither is very likely to cause much of an upset any deeper I think so probably not a big deal.

Sad Sinner went out, really want him to take the leap but just not there yet in the bigger moments of match after match.

Alcaraz
Med
Shelton (just fancy the upset)
Djoko

Gauff with the first set in 20 mins, Ostapenko winning 4 points...

Fritz has to serve a lot better than in that first set. He generally did okay on return games but than less than 50% first serves in against someone like Novak is a recipe for disaster.

Djokovic looks like he's ill or struggling in the heat. Fritz needs to take advantage as he'll eventually start feeling better, either in time or when he gets the doctor. If he goes can't get back on serve and win this set when Djokovic looks out of sorts there really is no chance.

Fritz needs a doctor to sort out his backhand.

He's struggled recently with the heat / fatigue hasn't he? I assume it's an age thing now and sheer number of matches he's accumulated over the last 15 years, he must be playing with various minor knocks each time he steps out now.

It's been a thing he's had problems with most of his career to be fair. He can manage things but he's prone to having moments where he looks out of sorts in really hot weather but it's not like he's going to retire or completely fade away like he did toward the beginning of his career.

wow, barely a page and the half since the tournament has started and 15 of those posts were about odds on Djokovic's win after being 2 sets down vs Djere. has that ever happened before? it's been a very underwhelming tournament so far, very little to talk about besides the heat and... well, heat.

Zverev as usual pathetic and tired instead of giving Alcaraz at least some resistance. Med is probably the last chance to offer us a good match before the final, as I don't see him going down easily like at Wimbledon.

Shelton has huge serve and has served a record number of aces here so far but the nerves usually kick in with such young players when they face Djokovic. I can see him losing the way Fritz did.

we kinda expected this tbf, simply awaiting another Alcaraz - Djokovic final from the start. it's a good thing Djoko aged well since half the tour is looking dead and unfit, and none of them is a serious competition to Alcaraz.

They all should be slapping on vests at this point now NY's getting brutally hot every year. As someone who recently started moving towards one for my running or well, anything sporty in hotter climates, it's just so much better. Heats still heat, but just makes life a little bit easier.

Alcaraz just thumped Zverev out of the way with such ease too. Danlil's good... but there's a high probability he goes the same way, especially he's in moan mode about the heat. Let's see.

Feck me, Alcaraz looks scary. I hope at least tennis wins and both bring absolute masterclass on Sunday. Hopefully old man prevails, but man o man - Alcaraz is scary.
