Appears Novak also lied on his Travel Declaration by stating that he had not travelled in the 14 days before he flew to Australia. He was seen in Serbia in late December and then in Spain on Jan 2nd.

Yep. His family is going to ensure he's deported tomorrow.

It is never going to happen but if the Queen did get involved it would be hilarious. Causing a constitutional crisis, probably resulting in Australia becoming a republic, would normally be chaos beyond even #scottyfrommarketing

I'd actually  if they cancelled his visa on that basis.

Are there two more smug smackable faces in world politics?

As a casual, I want to ask the hardcores on here to rate some players (old & current) but it'll probably get lost at sea until this Djokovic stuff ends so I shall wait!

I think he will be allowed to stay now. Doing a cancellation immediately would have been better for the Govt, so they are probably hoping this blows over now.

And then Dubai as well no ?

There is factional infighting going on in the libs hq about this.

If Novak plays they are soft on borders (a tory speciality) and if he is kicked out it makes them look stupid (again a tory speciality)

Its a lose/lose situation, and add in that one of their media backers in 9/fairfax would want Novak to play it is a situation that scotty from marketing and the rest of the libs do not want to be in.

Don't think this is relevant.

I edited my comment as it could be taken as I am implying or wishing something terrible. I am just in agony that my favorite Serbian athlete after Nemanja Vidic is making a fool of himself.

Maybe choose a better sporting hero and a better sport.

I'm fairly sure Filip Filipović is vaccinated.

Although I may be biased

I really don’t think they’ll cancel at this stage. If the appetite was genuinely there they’d have done it by now. They’re just trying to get through the worst of the public outcry and hope they can survive whatever’s left.

I think along with the fact that the Government had been seeking to extend yesterday's trial also till Wednesday, that seems to be their timeline by which they are ready to do whatever it is they have decided to do.

I'm fairly sure that saying someone else completed a form for you, that you signed declaring that you completed it yourself, isn't much of an excuse.
If it's incorrect for hundreds of other players as well, they're not going to deport them all

They will use the excuse of not wanting to hamper AO draw and judge ruling to let him be. They will get backlash anyhow.

What a shambles. It shows that even in immigration rules there is one rule for the plebs and another for the elites.

Yeah this is what I am thinking as well. Fundamentally nothing has changed - he’s still not vaccinated and doesn’t have a medical exemption which would make you wonder what the government are waiting for if they were going to turf him out.

They can only be thinking of letting him stay and how best to sell it to the public and how to best limit their damage before they make a statement.

I am confused about some aspects. Per reports if Djoko had to be re detained for the border entry to be re litigated then the minister had 4 hours post judgement yesterday to make that decision, which suggest the same can not be contested anymore and he can only be deported via special powers of the immigration minister. But then how did the other player get deported? Was her visa revoked via special powers also?

The 4 hrs was not a limit on a ministerial decision. I think it might have been the linit to appeal the court decision to release him from immigration detention.

The 2 others were deported after choosing not to dispute the visa cancellation.

Disgusting stuff by Novax.

But seems like it wasn't just AO who cocked up per this report.

So Oz govt now trying to act holier than thou also gave the go ahead.

Whatever visa or letter you have you still have to prove what you have signed for in your visa application.

Unless you are rich and famous of course.

This will not be solved til the last minute imo

Scotty and co needs a distraction from the sheer amount of feckups they are currently in.

Still expecting some Borat-like twist with the nationalistic Djoko nutters realising Farage is a small time, racist, opportunistic moron and kicking the sh*t out of him until he flees the country.

If he doesn’t end up playing, I suspect the most likely reason will be that the Australian government will have held the threat of the exercise of ministerial discretion over him and he’ll leave voluntarily to avoid the three year ban, which they’ll forego if he does leave under those terms. They don’t want to get themselves in another legal mess.

I still think he’ll play, but the most likely reason if not, in my opinion, is a soft truce of some sort.

I’m not so sure. Djokovic has put his cards firmly on the table with that tweet yesterday. He definitely intends on staying and I don’t see him backing away now to save any kind of face. He’s won as far as he is concerned so why make any kind of gratuitous move now ? Especially as to do so would further a cause that he either doesn’t give one shit about or clearly doesn’t even believe is real.

He’s put the ball back into the court of the Australian government (pun fully intended).

He said he hopes to stay and play at the AO so it was not quite as strong a comment as you'd expect. I think there's still some way to go in this case and we may see more twists.

I’m not so sure. Perhaps I’m reading too much into his tweet but “…want to stay and try to compete…” suggests to me that he knows this may not be over.

Dunno. As I said, I don’t think it will happen and you’re probably right that he feels entirely vindicated but I just wonder would he gamble a few more potential wins in Australia for one with an already disrupted preparation. I suspect he wouldn’t or won’t but I don’t think it’s beyond the realms of possibility.

I just don’t see him budging even with some kind of threat hanging over his head I guess is what I’m thinking. He strikes me very much as that type. And as you mentioned the Australian government won’t want another legal mess (which Djokovic will also be aware of) so he will push it to the absolute limit rather than agree a truce of sorts.

I don’t know. Just my perception of it. Personally I hope they boot him.

and on it rumbles
Australian border officials are investigating whether Novak Djokovic's travel entry form included a false declaration, Australian media report.

Djokovic's visa was revoked on arrival in Melbourne last week before being reinstated by a judge on Monday.
But Australia's immigration minister still has powers to re-cancel the visa and deport the unvaccinated player.

Djokovic - who is hoping to defend his Australian Open title next week - has not commented on the latest reports.

The 34-year-old Serb player's entry form stated he had not travelled in the 14 days before his arrival on 6 January.
Social media posts appear to show him in both Serbia and Spain during that fortnight.

Why would they do that? Farage’s base is anti EU and anti immigrant, which is perfect for Serbia’s nationalism.

The Aussies have to take this back to the judge, because its pretty obvious Novak lied when he stated on the form that he did not travel in the 14 days prior to his arrival.
