Sinner gets broken serving for the second set and now has to hold serve to force a tiebreak

A 7-0 tiebreak in both men's quarterfinals today. That's a tough one to get back from for Alcaraz, having served for the set.

That was quite a poor game from the both of them but Sinner just about consolidates the break.

Carlos has been fairly poor returning second serves whenever I've watched him this fortnight. Very Nadal vs Tiafoe vibes.

I think like a lot of other Spaniards, Carlos will also unfortunately not have a big enough serve to give him a lot of free points at crucial points in matches.

Yeah his serve is his obvious weakness right now. He has huge pop in his forehand though so perhaps a few tweaks to his technique might help.

Yeah I think Ferrero needs to work with him to figure it out. Moya got Nadal to tweak his serve late in his career and it's helped him get some free points at least. Carlos needs a better serve too or he'll struggle a little bit vs his much better serving opponents, imo.

If Carlos loses, Ruud only needs to reach the final to become #1. However, if neither Ruud nor Carlos make the final, Nadal takes the #1.
So 2 of the guys who can end up as 1st don't even need to win a slam? The rankings are kind of whack.

And there's the break back. Never really had faith in Sinner serving out the entire set. His first serve percentage has also really dipped.

Honestly eventhough I really like these two guys and I'm enjoying how incredible they both are, I'm hoping they tire eachother out for Tiafoe to make the final, the guy won me over I want him to win it all.

Sinner immediately breaks again.

It's the whole way the ranking points work with having to defend points from last year. Nadal and Ruud didn't play and reached R2 last year, respectively. So they have a lot of points to gain this time. Carlos also has did fairly well until RG so has picked up decent points this year. Just on the basis of this season though, Nadal should comfortably be #1.

Imagine a Tiafoe Khachanov final. That wouldn't look out of place as a third round match

There's so much more to tennis than Grand Slams, so if a player gets to two of the four finals in a year (which is what Ruud may do) and also does very well in other tournaments, I don't see a problem in him being number 1.

Nadal may be number 1 for doing well in three Grand Slams, and doing almost nothing else for the rest of the year, which means he'll be number 1 mostly for his results during a six-week priod.

Haha that is incredible bottling from Sinner. I'm glad I put some money on Carlos to win the set right before Sinner came out to serve.

Wow, this game is a rollercoaster. Nearing four and a half hours and there could still be 20 minutes BEFORE a fifth set.

It's not like Ruud has been winning any serious tournaments either though. He's never won a title beyond the 250 level. He has 3 250s won this year whereas Nadal has 2 Grand Slams wins.

Sinner has just imploded. He's looked very tight on serve all set and it's not like Carlos has made him play poorly. His first serve has completely disappeared.

Complete collapse from Sinner to end that set. You'd expect him to fold in the fifth but I'm done trying to predict this match.

Just keep in mind Sinner is still 21 y.o, and the crowd has been backing Alcaraz much more than him, it must be extremely difficult to deal with.

This match will almost certainly now be the latest match ever at the USO.

The signs were there all set honestly. His first serve disappeared all set.

But it's not just about how many tournaments you end up winning. Ruud may not win a Grand Slam this year, but if he'll end up reaching two finals it'll be big.

Also, I assume part of the idea behind the rankings is to give players an incentive to play in many tournaments and not just the big ones.

It's a good thing Pegula didn't force a third set against Swiatek or Alcaraz and Sinner could be playing until four in the morning. Is there a point where they'd stop play?

He'd have one first round withdrawal in Australia, a second round exit in Wimbledon and two finals at RG and USO. It's a fantastic season for him and I'd be happy for him to be #1 but it's hard to argue he's been the best player this year. To be honest, no one has had an amazing year (if we consider consistency through the season).

He hasn’t even won a Masters though. His biggest title this year is a 250 so far! Fair enough if he wins the title but it would be pretty nuts if he gets to number 1 off the back of a runner slot.

Also, how is the Sinner-Alcaraz match still going at this time? Was the night session delayed or do they just start particularly late?

Not just this year, Ruud has never won anything beyond a ATP 250. It'll be the first time something like this happens if he gets to #1.

Second match in a row that Carlos will leave court after 2am. They need to really start matches earlier or the domino's effect always hits the final match on Ashe.
