Tennis 2019

Could end up being good for the game.

Granted, we’ve been fortunate enough to have 3 of the greatest ever playing at the same time, and that’s been great to watch, but, it’s also made the finals of tournaments pretty predictable. Inconsistency leads to not knowing how a tournament will turn out, and that is fun all in itself.
It's made tennis predictable but of super high quality unlike all of the Next Gen. All these kids are so inconsistent they can't even go deep enough in Slams to meet the Big 3, let alone beat them. I think the ATP will represent the WTA post these guys retiring in terms of wild inconsistency and a very high number of unique Slam winners.

I've been watching mid-00s Federer matches, and the speed of the court at the US Open is something else. He played differently then - mostly waited at the baseline and used his forehad to dominate before mixing it up if needed - and because of that you could really see how quick the court was (and how strong his forehand was).
Like this:

Also this one is lovely, just very high quality from Roger.

Yeah I recently saw highlights of the Agassi final from 2005 and the difference is stark. I mean, obviously player's athleticism and style plays a part in the shift to baseline play, but it's gotten far too imbalanced for me. Shots that would have been winners or virtual winners tend not to be, and aggresive play has little reward. It'll lead to more players of a certain type too

If Nadal wins this year’s wimbledon he’ll overtake Federer for sure at some stage in the grand slam stakes. Amazing considering he missed so many because of injuries.

Seems in great form.

Nadal had his chances, didn't take them. Will need to serve it out now.

Great form but going to have 3 big challenges back to back in Querrey (huge server) and then ofcourse Federer and Djokovic back to back. He had to do the Del Potro, Djokovic and Federer (potential) route back to back last year and he didn't manage it and he was in equally good form then.

Sousa/Evans up next for Rafa which is far easier on paper than Nick and Tsonga.

Stephens just fell apart against Konta after failing to break her serve midway through the 2nd set. Konta pounced all over her after that.

Konta is playing some great points.

Did anyone catch the attractive looking line court judge yesterday afternoon? I think she was on during the Djokovic match and the one which followed as well.

Pouille has had his chance to break but can't take them. Had another one to break to serve for the set at 5-5. Federer's lucky Kei is the toughest player he's going to face till the semis because, so far, he's definitely off his game.

And ofcourse, having not taken his chances, he crumbles at 5-6 and loses the set. Just so typical of these type of players.

Berretini is losing is as well so it's Diego and Kei as R4 and QF opponents. On grass, can't really hope for better than that. Neither have big serves and won't trouble Federer.

Federer's simultaneously playing badly and having his own private shot of the tournament competition.

Berretini saves 3 match points and takes it to a 5th vs Diego.

Dan Evans is up a set and a break on Sousa.

Good interview with Federer there on inspiring older folks :D
Quite modest too about setting a new record of wins in slams.

Federer vs Berretini should be an interesting match. Federer has had a lot of shaky moments and so has Berretini at Wimbledon but the Italian is in great form on grass this year. Will probably be a tougher test for Federer than Kei in the quarters.

I saw most of the game. Federer's good shots today were volleys or passing shots. Nothing much from the baseline, and a ton of errors too. Nadal will eat him alive.

Sousa beats Evans in 5 and will face Rafa now. Sousa looked out of it at times in the second set so quite a good win for him this.

Strange treatment of Novak by Wimbledon yet again. They've put him out on Court 1 for a second match running despite him being #1 and defending champion.
Also, QFs played on Centre Court among the Top 4 :

Murray : 10/10
Federer : 13/15
Nadal : 2/6
Novak : 1/9 :wenger:

Very impressed by Pouille yesterday. Not seen much of him. Good player.

I saw Sousa against Cilic, he's underwhelming player in general but especially on grass and it will get ugly if Nadal takes that match seriously like he did with Tsonga and Nick. Nadal can break him couple of times in every set if he wants, but he finally got to play against rather average opponent so maybe he won't be fired up like in previous matches. he can certainly afford to go easy this time.

Yeah that definitely won’t end well for Sousa.

He’s already made history though, first Portuguese player ever to reach this far and that’s a record that won’t be beaten for a long time. Hopefully he avoids an ugly result vs Nadal.

The tradition of no Wimbledon on the 1st Sunday makes zero sense.
I agree, but the whole Manic Monday thing is a big Wimbledon selling point and one that other tournaments don't have, so they're reluctant to get rid of it.

Kind of ruins it for me as viewer at home.

If you going there to watch it definitely is the best day at a grand slam period as you guaranteed atleast one really great match which tends to happen on the second Monday.

But if you watching from home you got too many options to decide who to watch. Wish it was spread out as the Tuesday and Thursday are boring.

Not surprised with the Federer stat really. The wimbledon crowd loves him and let's be honest, he remains the biggest draw in the sport, even at 38. Murray has the British thing going for him. I am not exactly sure that Nadal and Djokovic are loved to the same extent as the other two, especially at Wimbledon. But Djokovic has a genuine reason to feel slighted that he has been overlooked again at Centre court. He is the defending champion after all.
