Tennis 2019

Fed’s issue is most likely fatigue. He’s played a lot of tennis compared to previous 2 years.

It’s complicating at his age. Last year he went in a bit undercooked and folded against Anderson so probably wanted to avoid that, plus the ranking.

So now Nadal has gone past Kyrgios. Tsonga is the only one left before the semis.

I don’t think Federer is a given to reach it either. Pouille isn’t going to be as generous as his opponent today, so Fed will need to step up which to be fair he usually does once he gets to the second week.

Pouille is quite rubbish imo and Fed won't face an issue. Berrettini is the only one can cause a shocker before the semis for Federer imo.
That is interesting that you felt that last year. I was a nervous wreck. I was never confident at any stage that he was going to do it. Djokovic kept the rallies so long and Rafa was trying to get them over quickly which does not really suit him.

So how would you compare his performance today to last year?
Rafa really should have won vs Djokovic. He threw away that third set TB and had so many chances to break even in the fifth. He really should have won Wimbledon last year.

The match against Nadal will be the only one that will tire him out though. He'll be fine.

Nick: "I was going for. I wanted to hit him square in the chest."

Always a disgrace this guy.

Annoyingly Boris was making excuses for him. He is 24 and behaving like a teenager.

Then you have Tomic being fined for not trying.

What is it at the moment with Australian tennis players.

I think Pouille could actually trouble Fed and will take at least a set from him. he looks to be in good form in opening matches, unlike Fed who is usually cruising in earlier rounds, but strangely not this time. 3-1 win at best, but wouldn't be surprised if it's 3-2 too.

Tsonga will be almost as difficult as Nick today so Rafa will absolutely have to be at his best again.

Federer should get through Pouille even with his current poor form but Berrettini might be the hard one.
Tsonga isn't able to serve like Kyrgios, so I think he should be okay.

Berretini has Schwartzman next, so not a banker that he goes through.

Self entitled bullshit. Australia's rich history in tennis means that these little shits come through in their teens and are touted as the next big thing. Sponsors run to them and spend shit loads on them so when they're pretty much multimillionaires before they're 20. They no longer need sport to fund their lifestyle so they get over it.

Additionally, I think both of them come from families where there was significant pressure put on them by their fathers. Tomic's especially is a known nut case. I'd imagine they were pretty much flogged into Tennis at a young age and are simply burnt out, but have no other relevant skills so have to play in order to generate income.

My ex housemate is a pretty gun Tennis player and was an extremely handy Goal Keeper for one of the junior development teams in the A-League here in Aus. Natural athlete but you will never see him play competitively in anything again. He just got burnt out as a kid playing sports that he's good at, but doesn't truly love.

Personally I think Federer's issue can sometimes be boredom. He goes from cruise ontrol to mistakes back to sublime.

That is really interesting. I had no idea that male tennis players were subjected to this type of parental treatment. We hear so much about the females on the circuit who have been through this and have had to step back and learn to love the game all over again once the parent has left the scene. So I suppose different environments suit different people. The William's sisters seemed to thrive but others find it over bearing.

It does not excuse their behaviour but it does make me far more understanding and tolerant to their situation so thanks for the insight.

Aussies do seem to push very hard in their sporting academies and I guess it is a method that works for some but not all.

I remember Alan Smith talking about his time in the FA football school and how he hated it/homesick etc, had to leave but found a different way / route to the top with a better balance to his life football/other things.

Kyrgios is such a weird one , can't remember too many athletes like him. He knows the issues he has but he has good money & lives a comfortable life and so doesn't really care much . He is 24 so there is still time for him but I just don't see him doing anything big in tennis ever . The guy was drinking in a pub till late the night before he was to play Rafa and I can only see things getting worse for him as he becomes older

Tennis money is not something someone could retire on, especially if they are not making Federer, Nadal or Djokovic money with endorsements. Kyrgios is a master edge lord and I don't think there's a sports book that would even take a bet against him going broke as soon as he stops playing in slams.

Really? Tomic was gonna get 45k for getting knocked out of the 1st round of Wimbledon.

His earnings are reportedly around 5m dollars total. Kyrgios at 7m. That’s easily enough to retire on.

Not too sure - let's say Kyrgios gets to $15m and retires at 30 years old, he'd need to live off of $300k/year if dies aged 80. That's nothing spectacular especially if he keeps up the lifestyle he's probably living right now.

That's assuming he doesn't have another income for the rest of his life though, which he probably will but still, it's very easy to piss away money once you're accustomed to a certain lifestyle and suddenly the money isn't coming in like it used to.

Kyrgios has also lost about £150k to fines. The only saving grace for him is he hasn’t had a coach for a few years.

Most players have coaches, fitness coaches and even their own chefs. As well as managers. Then not forgetting the top players get appearance fees.

Also he’s played in the laver cup. Winners for that get £250k each. So losers probably get half of that.

Is that post-tax income? Otherwise a large chunk of it will go there. He has to pay for his trainers, coaches and a lot of other physical upkeep required to keep himself competing at the highest level and those things aren't cheap. A lot of higher earning professionals make that kind of money in 10 years without the same lifestyle but they have the advantage of working into their 60s instead of retiring in their 30s and knowing Kyrgios' discipline, it might be even earlier if his body gives up.

This is a pretty good article on how rough it is for professional tennis players if they aren't marketable or top 5 good.

Think kyrgios might be my favourite tennis player at the moment. Got a lot of time for shithousery.

Another promising youngster (Khachanov) loses in straight sets to RBA.

Kevin Anderson is 2 sets to love down as well. One of Paire, RBA or Raonic are likely to make the semifinal from this quarter.

Seems like Djokovic head is not in the right place today, getting affected by the off the field issues and talks I would guess.

Head doesn't seem there plus it's the faster Court 1 and Hurkacz serves really well and he's struggling to break at all.

This Hurkacz guy is playing some incredible tennis, Djokovic is having some glimpse of lack of concentration but Hurkacz is really making him work hard. Not scared and actually trying to win points, I like it.

Hurkacz is absolutely peaking and Novak is below par. Novak is going to néed to win this somehow even if he can't get out of third gear.

As we speak, triple break point for Novak.

Coco Gauff really struggling against Hercog now, just lost the first set to love, in a pretty bad way, lost serve with a couple double faults thrown in there.

Coco came back from the dead multiple times to take this to a third. Lots of drama!
