Tennis 2019

3 of them combined have 52 grand slams

This level of tennis will never be reached again with 3 of the best players ever to play the game in the same era

Nadal was really poor. Probably the worst I've seen him play in a final.

Credit to Djokovic though. Some of the shots he was hitting were unreal. He's back on top again.

Yeah I think we've all gotten used to this era and in a few years from now the sport will pale miserably in comparison.

Despite losing the final Stas has been playing some great tennis at times in Rotterdam.

Tennis players seem the weirdest people ever.

All top players seem to win stuff then split with their coaches. Osaka being the latest.

Seem like petulant teenagers half of them.

I think tennis is the sport with the highest number of completely spoiled brats. Not directly in relation to the amount of splitting with coaches (which could have other reasons) but I find it staggering how many constantly go into meltdown on the court or act like utter bellends in general.
Completely armchair psychology but it wouldn't surprise me if the combination of the sport being super individualistic and the fact that the majority of them come from quite well off backgrounds (very expensive sport for teenagers) is absolutely toxic for their character development.
Having said that, the absolute elite seems to quite leveled, it's more the second tier players (Raonic, Stephens) who seem a bit mental.

Really I'd say tennis players in general seem to be a class act. Djokovic, Nadal, Federer, Murray are about as good a set of ambassadors a sport can hope to have.

Yeah I referred to them.

Yeah I referred to them.
The nature of the player/coach relationship makes it inevitable. I admire Osaka making her happiness her priority, Bajin was clearly helping her get great results but that's not the only thing that matters in life. Most of us have had a manager who is a dick but for tennis players they actually have the power to get rid of the people who coach them if they're not happy. They all also follow each other, Murray brings in Lendl and then everyone else gets a big name former player, and I wonder if Osaka has looked on enviously at one of her rivals (maybe in terms of the relationship a player has with their coach rather than the results) and decided that's what she wants for now.

Nadal really is throwing this match away against Kyrgios
I'm surprised that he beat Nadal.

Yeah, the only explanation is to me that Nadal wanted to lose. Kyrgios is constantly getting schooled these days while he pretends like he's not trying.

It was a tight game. Kyrgios played well.

Nadal was never troubled on his serve in all three sets. But he had a lot of opportunities to break. Had match points in the tie break too and somehow just threw it away from there.

Nadal blasting Kyrgios in the press conference though. His behaviour throughout the match was pathetic.

What was he doing?

Well done to Roger on winning his 100th title! Had this on in the background whilst watching our match. Straight sets win. Wonderful.

Only 9 more to go before he catches Connors at which point he would be both the slam and singles titles leader.

I don't know whether people are interested in the removal of Chris Kermode as President of the ATP, but the machinations around it are becoming interesting. There seems to be a lot of chatter that this was heavily influenced by Djokovic, along with Justin Gimelstob, who isn't without his own issues at the moment

https://www.theguardian.com/sport/b...novak-djokovic-chris-kermode?CMP=share_btn_tw

Federer and Nadal seem to be questioning the way in which the decision was made by the Players' Council

https://www.telegraph.co.uk/tennis/...fael-nadal-voice-concerns-decision-removeatp/

Djokovic has refused to confirm that he did indeed oust Kermode citing confidentiality and has not elaborated on why the vote went against him, other than to say that he isn't happy with the structure of tennis generally (and, tbf, those conflicts of interest are explained well in the last couple of eps of The Tennis Podcast, though they are firmly in the Kermode camp). However, the structural issues seem to be unrelated to Kermode personally and aren't likely to be related to his removal, so the suggestion seems to be that they know who they'd like to vote into the position in his place.

One other theory I read was that Djokovic is extremely successful in Asia, both in terms of tennis and the financial side. He'd like the Tour finals to move there but apparently Kermode wasn't amendable to supporting him on that, which caused a rift between them.

All pretty odd.

Clear path to the finals for Shapovalov if he can keep up his current form. Roger v Rafa in the semis could be interesting.

Got to admit it’s been a dull Indian Wells so far.

The night game is Karlovic vs Thiem and Koelscriber vs Monfils.

Nice match from Federer.

Looking forward to Nadal/Kachanov

Nadal has knee problems again. Played fairly well considering he looked to have problems early on in the first set.

Tape on the knee now.

Well Nadal still won in straight sets (two tie breaks). I'll be very surprised if Federer isn't in the final on Sunday.

Nadal said he might withdraw.

Don’t think he should play Miami and just get ready for clay. I think he should have skipped IW like last year. His body just struggles on hard courts.

Nadal withdraws with a knee injury. No Fed/Nadal semi to look forward to.

Never expected Thiem's first masters win to come on hardcourt, he played a great tournament.
