Tennis 2019

Djokovic at his best today, made Nadal look like an also-ran which is extraordinary given the kind of form Rafa has shown this tournament. That said, Nadal is still in his comeback phase, so maybe we'll see a better scrap between them later in the season.

Not because I'm a Serb myself, but feel like Đoković could return the asteroid that killed the dinosaurs.

Brilliant performance by Djokovic. Abysmal by Nadal. He didn’t do any of the things that got him to the final.

Disappointing final.
I think it's really a case of Novak being in demolition mode today. Doubt Rafa would have won even if he'd played better. Unbelievable stuff.

I think someone on BBC got it spot on.

Nadal started playing a clay game and it was never going to work on that court or against Djokovic who wasn’t going to miss and had the whole court to aim for.

34 winners and 9 unforced errors, no player at their best had a chance today.

French Open looking very interesting now. Nole with a chance to hold all four Slams once again

Really disappointed with that from Rafa today. Great from Novak, but was a demolition job.

Djokovic just too good. The consistency of depth he gets is incredible. He's unplayable on that form.

Nadal

If Novak carries on like this he will end as the GOAT.

Djokovic is starting to become for Nadal what Nadal was for Federer. At this rate I see no chance for Nadal even at the French open.

This is like MJ retiring in 94, then coming back and still making everyone his bitch.

Her reference to Djokovic having a tough time didn’t seem to go down well with him. She might as well have force fed him gluten.

After watching the last 6 months. I think the likes of Nadal(unless it’s clay) and Federer can’t stop him. We seen Zverev and Khachanov beat him in finals.

It’s more the young guys who probably worry Novak because they don’t have the fear of playing him like they do with Nadal or Federer.

It’s amazing turn around. I watched Djokovic at Indian Wells and Miami last year where he lost to average players outside top 100. Even at Barcelona he lost to Klizan. He was literally struggling to win any matches. Even the matches he was winning were hard fought.

Get in Djoko - what a beast! Caught the first set and he was on another planet :p

Even as a Nadal fan, it's hard not to admire Novak. Just utterly and amazingly dominant at his peak. Phenomenal performance yet again

Nadal was thoroughly outplayed and uncomfortable from the first minute. Everytime there was opportunity to put pressure on he fluffed his lines.

It would be quite funny if the least popular of the big 3 (and quite comfortably the least popular) ended up winning the most slams and had to be feted as the best men’s player of all time. I suspect people would still tie themselves in knots trying to argue for the other two.

in case someone missed the final:

brutal performance from Novak. machine.

I wasn’t aware there was such a distinct discrepancy in popularity? I’m a huge Murray fan and knew he didn’t measure up to the big 3 but still...!

A record he just beat that's gone slightly unnoticed - Federer was till today the record holder for all 3 -Australian open, US open, and Wimbledon(6,5,8).
IMO that is quite a good GOAT argument - it's gone today.

Novak will never match Rafa at the French Open or even Federer at Wimbledon, but he can probably tie Fed at the US (he needs 2 more), which will leave Fed and Novak as record holders at 2 slams each and Rafa with his astonishing French record.

Crazy scoreline!! Was Nadal injured or something?

Just because he lost doesn't mean he's injured, something which many fans to fall back on.

He was utterly obliterated by Djokovic, he was on the receiving end of what he gave to Federer in RG 2008.

Based upon this video, it seems Nadal placed like 20 balls in the net in this video alone and another bunch were out. I'm sure Djokovic deserves it , but that was a lot of unforced errors from Nadal.

I'm a Federer fan.

Novak is going to finish the career as the greatest ever player IMO. He'll surpass Federer, had undoubtedly the highest peak ever (both trusting my eyes and ELO rating), and has H2H superior record with Federer and Nadal. Only an injury/another mental burnout may stop him from achieving it.

Djokovic licking his lips at Federer's GOAT status. Hope he or Nadal gets it. Just for laughs.

Hell of a beatdown for Rafa. It was probably a more important match for him than Novak, and obviously Novak was a huge step up in terms of quality compared to who he played to get to the final, but still... Be interesting to see what impact it has on the clay season, before this I would have gone with Nadal sweeping nearly everything but we've seen him struggle to overcome mental blocks against Novak before so we might actually get an interesting clay season for the first time in a few years.

I think such a defeat would have usually had a bigger impact on him but this time, he's outdone himself and the expectations placed on him for Aussie Open. Many thought he wouldn't even play after he pulled out of Brisbane and as he said, he didn't have the kind of match time/preparation to face someone of Novak's calibre.
I think Novak will be a huge huge threat but don't think this will add to the mental issues he faces with Novak.
