Tennis 2018

Even as a non-Brit, I’d love to see Edmund win if from here, as unlikely as that is (saw a tweet earlier that even if he’s beaten in the semi, he’ll have added approx 50% to his career prize money this fortnight alone with around $1.2m) Albeit I think we might well see a Cilic v Berdych final, which could be fun for sheer novelty value.

Something Nadal said in the wake of a discussion back in 2012 about making the tour shorter popped into my head:
"He (Federer) finishes his career like a rose because he has a privileged physique. But neither (Andy) Murray, nor (Novak) Djokovic nor I will finish fresh as a rose."

As true today as it has ever been.

Rafa quite critical just now of the ATP.

'Someone running the tour should have a think over the situation. Too many injuries. There's life after tennis, someone should think about it'.

Said the injured muscle is high up in the thigh, not hip. Knee working fine.
You could argue that someone should be him or someone on his team. He (understandably) pushed pretty hard for that year-end number 1 last year, but he should have skipped Montreal/Cincinnati and Beijing/Shanghai at the bare minimum after such a full clay season. Bit like Murray the year before, albeit not so extreme.

Privileged physique? What's that? Taking care of body?
Reminds of what Fergie used to say about Giggs' physique, how he was just built the right way and never put on any weight. Not sure if that same principle applies to Federer but you can see where he's coming from.

Never got the point of these complaints about the tour length and intensity to be honest. Nobody is holding a gun to their heads to force them to participate and compete all the time. Especially in the cases of these high profile players with injury, they got their untold millions in the bank. Never heard someone talk about the myriad of lower tier pros that scrape by by through winning a match at an atp 250+ event every fortnight and have to worry to make Ends meet, nevermind put away a couple of millions for retirement. Bet they would be delighted to have fewer opportunities to earn their bigger paychecks.
It's a physical Sport and clearly takes his toll, but it's not like they have to work in a dusty mine 8 hours a day, 330 days a year. Nobody will fire Nadal if he takes 2 weeks off for every week he plays.

Giggs had plenty of hamstring problems in his mid-20s though. He lost a yard of pace after that even with practicing yoga.

Roger might be naturally more flexible/durable than the other guys, but his playstyle if anything is the reason he's been able to carry on for so long. He plays shorter 5 setters than them playing 3 setters ffs.

Chung through.

Now that's a talent I can get behind. 21 year old, Slam semi finalist, bested World no.4 and former World no.1 -12 times Slam champions.

Can' wait to see him face Roger. Come on Chung!

Plenty of errors from Fed but Berdych is playing very nicely so far.

Berdych in top form and Federer not hitting it well. Can't see the swiss pull himself up to the necessary level today to be honest.

This many double faults is always a sign that he's not having a good day and/or back problems. Worrying signs.

He was strangely tentative those first 4-5 games. Once he started getting aggressive it was better.

How much was that, like 10 net pts won now?

Nice tiebreak. Berdych probably should have won that set, he was the better player for most of it.

Very difficult to see Berdych comeback now.. He needed that first set after playing so well and rattling Federer

Fed's playing well, apart from that brainfart of a service game in the first set.

That second set was very high quality. 19 winners out of 30 points won.

If Rudseksi can win SPOTY after getting to a final of the USopen - Edmund can get top 3 in 2018.

Has so much going for him.

GSM Federer.

Looked pretty good today. Over 60 winners for 3 sets.

The match against Chung will be tricky. He knew Berdych inside and out.
