Tennis 2017

Not being a Federer fan, I find it really annoying. Cheer on your man that's fine but cheering an opponents errors and double faults is in poor taste.

Spot on. I was at the Sofia Open tournament last month and the crowd was cheering the double faults of Dimitrov's opponents and were loud as feck between their first and second serves, which is unacceptable in tennis and it doesn't matter if your favorite player is on the court or not.

Even though I'm Bulgarian and obviously like and respect Dimitrov, this annoyed the shit out of me. Problem is sometimes the crowd fails to realize that when you watch tennis live you cannot act the same way as you do on the football stadium for example.

On another younger player, what do you guys think or Thiem? I've got mixed views of him, think I've said it in here, but think he may just become that Berdych, Nishikori type player. God consistent players, but overplays himself and bottles the big moments, doesn't come across as a winner to me
Reminds me a lot of Safin, albeit with 1 handed BH and a bit less talent.

If he's lucky he can get a chance at couple of slams after the big four retire.

I just don't find him consistent enough to be a top player. After these 4 go, I don't see any one player standing out. A lot of slams will get divided between the likes of NK, Zyerev, Thiem, Baby Fed and co. You just don't see one outstanding player there like Fed/Djoko/Nadal were.

In the Murray Federer Wimbledon final, the crowd was pretty split iirc.

Yeah I think he too may get lucky in terms of his level of opponents. Still baffles me why be plays so much.

Also heard something along the line of him saying this time next year he'd be happy just to be in the top 10, or something like that. Not sure he's really got it in him to push to the next level.

It's not just fans and commentators though, it's stuff happening even in interviews. Stan looked visibly annoyed recently when he'd just won a match and the first two questions they asked him were about Federer. Stan is the Swiss #1 and has 3 Slams in the last year and he still keeps getting asked about Fed

Yeah I remember saying this many times that the French would cheer Fed against their own as well. I genuinely wouldn't be shocked to see Fed being supported over Murray at Wimbeldon. It's the Apple sort of fanboyism and it's really annoying if you're not part of that bunch but yes I'm used to it now and do usually watch his games on mute. But again, this age and swansong excuse isn't one I believe because it's something that has always happened. When I watch a match, I want the commentator to be neutral and he's supposed to be that way but if you're so all out in favor of one guy winning, it gets a nauseating tbh. Anyway, I guess just another year or two of this to go.

Well he agreed a contract with Basel not so long ago to play till 2019 there, so 2 years at least :)

We don't have the tennis culture yet, so it's understandable. Most who were there expected this would be like a football game, so nothing surprising. :D

I do love Roger though, he's the best ever for me. I think it's understandable that almost everyone involved in Tennis is a little in awe of him.

Don't agree with cheering double faults though. Pretty mean spirited.

He seems to play pretty much every 250/500/1000 tournament there is. He'll burn out if he's not careful.

Kyrgios and Zverev, have the potential to be stand outs out of those guys I think.

Wimbledon is supposed to be the classy Slam and even there you've got fans who cheer opponents and their mistakes vs Fed.

I think so. Crazy that he doesn't schedule better.

Was listening to a tennis podcast and the guy thinks it helps him to play so much, don't buy it at all though.

Nick just seems way too mental to sustain a long career I think. I guess he could be a 3-4 Slam player eventually.

Picking easy points. Karlovic is the other one who has been vulturing the tour playing 250's from Bogota to Zagreb and still hovering around top 20, without making a QF in a Masters or GS in 5 years or so.

Yeah, that's true. Still wanted to slap every one of them on the face, though :smirk:

You can excuse Karlovic for doing it as he's a pretty pointless player who was never going to be a star/winner. Thiem has a lot of potential so you'd think he'd be smarter.

Of late he seems to be settling down. Maybe a false dawn, but who knows. In terms of talent, a very rounded player.

Karlovic at least relies on a massive serve and ending points quickly. This guy likes to rally. Can't see him sustaining it for too long.

Aye, me too, although I'm not sure it will help. :)

yeah, I'm Federer fan but I also don't like that part(probably only against Nadal in the past )

It's a bit sad though that after the quality of tennis in this current era, it's going to be quite a drop down to the next.

Bitterness runs deep in this thread. Take a rest boyz.

You just have to face it - Federer is a great great champion - one of the best of all time in sports (not just tennis) - he will get the plaudits. It is what it is.
Agree that fans shouldn't cheer his opponent's mistakes, but you can't expect them not to go wild for him.

To be fair Thiem has a pretty clean style so a smart scheduling could mean a very long career. Maybe an older pro as a coach can help him in that sense. At the moment he's racking up points for better draws at the clay season so probably makes sense to him as he'll get favorable draw, but that back to back tournaments on hard will be taxing on his body. Probably next year he'll be smarter in his schedule and after some of the top guys fade away even more.

The new guys have zero charisma as well. Best to enjoy the big four as long as we can...

Definitely a fan thing. I'm a Nadal fan, and I quite like Federer, but a couple of his fans I know just act so arrogant about him. Like I've heard some guys tell me how they'd be happy if all the big guns were injured for Wimbledon. Or for the Australian Open that they didn't care how he won it, as long as he does.

Isn't that normal fandom?

Roger has had a bit of a go at the crowd for their behaviour today apparently.

For me that's a bit much. Personally, I wouldn't be delighted if Nadal won a slam in such circumstances, like his opponent being injured. These things happen, but essentially wishing it, or not caring if it happens makes it a disappointment.

I took it to mean they don't care how well he plays as long he wins. Like today for example, Roger was pretty fortunate to win that.

Rather than wishing for injuries. That would be out of order yeah.

That's normal that fans feel like that:lol: I'm sure Nadal/Novak fans feel the same way. Heck we're happy if United don't have to face certain players. That's just the way it is.

At the final against Goffen somebody even shouted "out" on MP serve. Ridiculous.

Maybe for you, but say Nadal was in the final in RG against Novak or Roger and one of them retired early on in the match or it became a bye, I wouldn't be celebrating because he has his 10th.

Football is a team sport, so to me it's very different in many aspects.

I definitely wouldn't 'celebrate' someone getting injured or retiring for any reason. I've also never had the experience of knowing any Fed fans like myself who wish injury on anyone so Fed can win. I'm pretty sure that's not representative of most of his fans.

However, you can't deny that you're usually relieved if your favourite doesn't have to play a tricky opponent (for whatever reason) - that's just a normal reaction. It doesn't mean you wish them harm.

Anyway, your lad Rafa is in the semis, so enjoy!

Definitely not the majority, but a couple fellas I work with certainly are like that and made it fully clear.

Oh no, I agree, looking at Nadal's route to the final for example has looked like a 250/500 event. Nice in some respect, but equally those matches against big opponents are the most exciting to look forward to (and nervy!)

Kyrgios just gone a set up against Zverev. Played some good stuff. Should be good to see him actually play Federer, unlike at IW.

Yeah I'm watching a bit but will fall asleep shortly!:D Think Nick is too strong for Sascha.

Nick's shot just now! Amazing 'tweenie'!

Anyway, have a good night.:)

Same to you mate.

Went to go find it as I switched it off,and certainly worth sharing.

This will be the next big rivalry in tennis. Not on the Fedal level but it will be entertaining. Both are incredibly talented.

The women's final looks interesting. Konta vs Wozniacki, I don't follow the ladies game as closely so not sure how this one is seen in terms of match up.
