Do you think Roger should skip the French?

No chance, he needs to keep believing he can one day beat Rafa at the french. Imagine if he somehow won 2 Frenchies.. his legacy would be unbeatable for future generations. I'd skip the clay court season in general, maybe one warm up tourney and just turn up see how it goes.

He's not that humble really so when he tries to be it comes across forced. Nadal genuinely is though.
Agreed. Easy to be 'gracious' when you've won. He has done many poisonous remarks over the years when he's lost in post match conferences to journos.

Federer should skip the smaller tournaments and probably French open too, and go all in for Wimbledon. Nadal should win French Open and become the only one in history who has won the same Grand Slam 10 times. I would prefer him not doing so, better to not see him going nearer to the number 18.

I think he was a lot more relaxed about this tournament as the people watching it.

That plus he had like 30 minutes to calm himself after winning it. He was crying straight after winning it

So gutted for Rafa, but happy for Roger.

The two best players in tennis history without a doubt. We are so lucky to be living at the same time of this human legends.

Over the moon. Not even germany's WC in 2014 made me this happy.

2012 was horrendous but he was 26-27 and you knew he'd win more eventually. This is just so so hard to take.
Very true. Probably more a case of me being mentally drained (from the Zverev and Dimitrov match) if that makes sense. I don't know, probably just better prepared for a loss.

Bolt? Gretzky?

I don't think Jordan is that much liked universally.

I'd be surprised if a lot of people know who Gretzky is
Although using my friends as a sample isn't ideal haha

Bolt is a good shout

I'm surprised it was Rafa who lost his energy before Roger. He's always outlasted his opponents (except Joko, who I'm pretty sure is made of rubber)

French maybe but there's no chance he can win Wimbeldon again. The servebots all have the best matches of their lives against him. Really really need Nadal to win the French to get over this loss. Football doesn't get me half as depresssed as tennis can.

Shouldn't be depressed mate, I'm more a Nadal fan but Federer absolutely deserved this.. how much has he given the sport, I mean I play tennis and I'd be lying if my entire way of playing hasn't been learnt from watching Federer. He's the guy who made me want to learn how to play the game, so absolutely deserves to have at least one major toe to toe encounter with Nadal which goes in his favour.

He was broken after that 2008 loss, can't imagine what he must have gone through after that. He was never quite the same again as a person so it is beautifully fitting that he has had to go through all that time and almost fight his own mind at times today and finally overcome Nadal. Sport doesn't get more special than that.

Tell you what, if they do meet again and they're fit, I reckon it would be an even more spectacular encounter because now Federer knows he can beat him = less unforced errors and Nadal would have to up his own game and he'd be extra hungry for the win. The quality would in theory be even better.

At the end of the 3rd set I was prepared. To then come back, be 3-1 up in the final. Ugh. I genuienly hate the Aussie Open. All of Nadal's injuries, final losses. It's just a horrible horrible tournament :(

If he somehow does it he should be crowned best ever, same amount of grand slams and far better head to head.

wtf, bigger fan of Federer than your country/national team of your favorite sport? Just curious, Bayern to win nothing this season to trade for Federer winning at least two more grand slams this season. Would you take it.

French Open coming up so Nadal has great chance there. Season's only just started...

Definitely. Felt like all he needed was one more break. Didn't really have a sniff though.

I think that will never admit (since he is as polite in the interviews as in the speeches after losing ) but Rafa is quite obsessed with the 18 GS of Roger.
I saw him really disappointed today, not the kind of speech "I take the positive,I couldn't imagine to be here".
I only remember that sad face after the second Wimbledon that lost with Roger.
In the past meant an extra motivation but I wonder how long he can keep this level.
On the other hand Roger is a joy to watch. He shouldn't think about the retirement idea.

In a heartbeat. I'm a huge Bayern fan, but Federer has been my greatest sporting hero since I started watching tennis. My joy about him winning has nothing to do with him being from another country. He transcends borders.

Thank God the Aussies speeded up the court! Certainly helped Roger! Great scenes on Margaret Court

Well I am happy for you. You must be drunk with happiness right now. After all these years of suffering heartbreak vs Nadal in the Grand Slams, he crowns probably one of his career's last Grand Slam finals with a win vs his nemesis. Now all he needs is another Grand Slam final win against Djoko.

I think that the distribution of Nadal's grand slams is a bit bad IMO. He has won 9/14 (64%) GS in French Open. For comparison, Fed has won 7/18 (39%) on Wimbledon.

Essentially, Rafa is the best ever tennis player in a Grand Slam, but take him out of French Open, and he has 'only' 5 GS. Take Fed out of Wimbledon, and he still has 11 GS, which by itself would put him in a shortlist for GOAT.

Then of course, Fed has more finals, more semis, more quarters, more weeks as No.1, more consecutive weeks as No.1 than any other tennis player in the history.

...

Even the record which is absolutely in Rafa's favor, is very biased because they have played so many more matches in clay rather than grass. Rafa leads there 13-2, Federer leads in grass 2-1, Rafa leads on hard courts 9-8. So, outside of their preferred surface, it is just 9-8 for Rafa.

Essentially, Rafa is a more dominant player in clay than Fed is on any surface, and there are so many more matches in clay than in grass, which makes the record so much in Rafa's favor.

But to be considered the greatest, you need to be great outside of your comfort zone too. And Fed is so much better than Rafa outside of their preferred surface.

Already opened my first beer and if it weren't for my deadline today I'd be well into a bottle of Gin already. :D

4 aces in 5 sets is just incredibly embarrassing. All he needed was some free points on serve in that final set
Doesn't he average just 2 aces for match recently? I think that someone said during the match that out of the top 100 best players, Rafa is the penultimate when it comes to numbers of aces per match.

Really hope they do something about the semis being on different days though. Today really was a disadvantage for Nadal with 24 hours lesser of a break and a 5 setter.
