I always felt the loser should just be allowed to go. Remember Messi being made to hang around after the WC Final to receive the Golden Boot?

No part of being a sportsman is learning to lose gracefully and facing the full consequences of defeat.. harsh as it sounds.

Tennis is by far the most cruel sport ever. I absolutely detest the Australian Open. Can't believe Nadal threw that away in the final set...yet again.

Nice speech from Rafa. Just glad to see him back competitive again. Genuinely not as disappointed as I thought I'd be if he lost

Same. But the way Roger, played, I can't help feel happy for him. Prior to the tournament I would have snatched your hand off at Rafa making the final.

True, it's just the context of him being so close with that lead in the 5th. Hard to know where he lost it really, so so close.

Thankfully he does have age on his side so hopefully by going so close here he will get confidence he can win a slam again, would be fitting if he did it at Roland Garros. Very gracious speech just now too.

He threw nothing away - game was always on Roger's racquet and he was the one making all of the plays. Nadal won the 2nd and 4th because Fed went into unforced error mode and gifted countless points. Thankfully in the final set he managed to pull himself together when he needed to most.

How? I'm absolutely devastated. This feels just as bad as the 2012 final.

With Novac out of form and the world number 1 being Murray, id say both players have more chances to win grand slams.

Great speech from Rafa, nothing but respect for him.

Fair play to Federer. This is a phenomenal effort.

Hopefully this perks up Murray, Djokovic and some of the others. It could be exactly what tennis needed this year.

With his style of play, he should just carry on now.. after this he has nothing to lose and even if he loses, he can just say I am 36 and what? perfect scenario for him right now to grab a few slams under the radar.

Pat Cash said earlier he could play another 5 years and he wold still top 5-6

He was a break up and just lost it after that. Struggled to hold and went ultra defensive except on break points. To lose from 3-2 30-0 up is shocking.

And it's all part of the incredible drama tennis produces, whether it's Federer's tears in 2009 or Novak's incredible grace after losing at Roland Garros in 2015.

Is there any other GOAT that is genuinely liked across the world like federer?

The thing is about that final set, Roger was pressuring him on every service game. Seemed like the break back was coming. The one against Novak in 2012. Very tought to take though.

Thing is if he has to play week in week out ATP, I think his body would break down.. same with Rafa. I think they both should not focus on rankings and concentrate on slams. I can see Rafa winning another french and possibly a wimbo.. Federer has another two slams in him. But they both need to keep that energy for the slams, the tour itself is incredibly gruelling.

Crap speech from Federer. Nadal won the speech stakes./

It really isn't
Some of you lot go OTT

No way is Wawri winning Wimbo. His weakest surface and all the big guns will be wanting to win that one. I'd have Fed/Nadal/Murray as equals for that one.
I wouldn't rule anything out when it comes to Wawrinka.

Do you think Roger should skip the French?

That said, the KIA sponsorship speech which plagues every Aussie Open is downright human cruelty. It is the worst post match ceremony of all the slams because of it, but it is funny have to admit.

I have no idea mate. 2012 was tough though. I'm deflated, no doubt, but somehow not as deflated as in previous final defeats.

Great speaches from both, true role models!

Expected him to be a bit more emotional though, the greatest achievement in Tennis ever.
Never understood why Sampras was so disliked for being a boring cnut, when Federer shows again that he is a robot too.

French maybe but there's no chance he can win Wimbeldon again. The servebots all have the best matches of their lives against him. Really really need Nadal to win the French to get over this loss. Football doesn't get me half as depresssed as tennis can.

I agree. He might not be ranked top 5-6 but he'll still play like it

2012 was horrendous but he was 26-27 and you knew he'd win more eventually. This is just so so hard to take.
