Another break for Fed. He has been poor in service games but dominant returning. Forehand winners and good backhands.

Oh come on, it's Federer in Basel, about as safe a bet for a one sided crowd, hardly a 'disgrace'. Del Potro certainly didn't mind having the crowd at the US Open doing the same for him. Murray at Wimbeldon, Rafa in Madrid, it happens everywhere. (Except Djokovic, no one likes him tbf.)

And? Does that make it right? It's a tennis match not a football match.

The same happened to Del Potro against Federer at the US open.

Federer fans are the worse. They cheer at faults or misses. Scream during points. Atleast the argentines keep their mouths shut during points.

What an exceptional final from both players! Couldn't take my eyes off the match.

Old Man Fed getting beat up for almost 2 sets and he grinds it out. Incredible:drool:

Everyone's favorite farm animal does it again.

Once again a great match between these too, even though Federer blew a ton of chances. Del Potro clearly the 3rd best player in the world atm.

Atleast the argentines keep their mouths shut during points.

Ah yes, the famously subdued argentinian fans.

Is the number one ranking still in play for Fed this year ?

Depends on Paris. If he plays there, yes. He's 1480 or so points behind Nadal with a maximum of 2500 up for grabs in Paris and London.
I think he won't play Paris, though. :(

Yes it is. It would be a long shot though. He might also skip the Masters in Paris.
Rafa has to lose early in Paris and then not win in London I think for Federer to be No.1 (provided he wins the tournament).

I'll be shocked if he plays in Paris. I don't know what his withdrawal will do to the draw, however. It will probably benefit Cilic somehow. That's what usually happens.

Federer is out of Paris. Nadal needs to win one match in Paris to be Number 1.

People are too much in love with Federer to see this but it's true and it's disgraceful. Every Federer match (especially the ones where he's not playing well) turn into a poisonous Davis Cup atmosphere and it doesn't matter if it's Basel or London or Shanghai or Miami. The whistling when opponenet serves, cheering first and double faults, cheering errors is in really poor taste and this sort of stuff will be around till Federer retires. Support your man, don't cheer the other mans mistakes, it's pathetic.

So Thiem is playing then? I thought he was "injured". Saw the easy draw without Federer in his path and felt better?

I'd have done the same, to be fair.
Well, Thiem signed up for Paris and I doubt he'll pull out given the draw. He stands absolutely no chance at the WTF, so he should push here.

Congrats to all Rafa fans for clinching the #1.

Not arsed at all about the #1 really. Don't want to be too greedy after the season he's had but, WTF would be a great way to cap the year.

He'll probably lose to Anderson, if the latter gets past Verdasco. Still, that would likely be better than London. I wouldn't be at all surprised if he doesn't get a win there.

Could be a good fight for the last place in London next week. Querrey, PCB and Anderson have all been pretty rubbish since New York, and the first two are in Rafa's quarter so they won't be getting more than 180 points. Shame Delpo and Tsonga both lost today, think they've probably left themselves too much to do.

The players?

If you end the year as number 1 in the men's game it means you had a very good year.
Doesnt it mean you had a good year when you won 2 grand slams and won most tournaments you played in?

It doesnt really measure who was the best player but more a combination of who was the best and who competed most, for Federer fans to clinch on that like it's a must, seems weird for me as they have watched the entire year and know where he stands amongst all the others. Not some bs ranking.

Erm in the last 10-15 years the best player of the year has usually ended up being number 1 in the men's game unlike the women's game.

So being number 1 reflects that dominance. You telling me Murray didn't care about being number 1? You telling me Nadal and Fed who were like 5th and 7th at the start of this year don't care?

Federer said he knew it was going to be hard once Nadal won the US open. He has made a wise decision not to play in Paris.

It's a big deal. The world no.1 in the mens game reflect your consistency throughout the year.

I want Fed to get it as another benchmark in his career only though, to get back the World No.1 at his age would be another nice record to have.

Federer withdraws after the draw is made and nobody says a thing. Murray got a lot of stick for doing the same, a couple of months ago. Except he had a real injury, at least.

I agree. Unfortunately with him unlikely to play next year on clay I'm not sure when he'll have a realistic chance of clinching it(if any).

It was a cakewalk draw for him tho... Why would he get a stick for having to play Thiem who hasn't gone past 4th in a non clay tournament the whole year.

Im not really talking about the players themselves but more the fans, it's like United winning the Prem and CL and then getting bothered that we arent #1 at some ranking just because the number number 1 played more games.

Everyone is pissed because it was at a Grand Slam, especially when it prevents a potential Fedal final. I've never seen anyone bothering about players withdrawing from Masters. Fed copped a lot of flacks when he retired against Djokovic in the WTF final.

Well I'd just be well chuffed if he adds any more Masters and Grand Slam next year. The AO would probably be his best shot since Andy and Nole would be well on their way back from the clay season onwards. The only realistic shot for no.1 was this year but Montreal ended that. Nadal deserves it though, no doubt about that. Without Fed beating him 4 times he could have easily had the best year ever of his career.

If you are looking at more control I'd suggest Solinco Hyper-G. It's popular and I think a good value at around 10 bucks. You won't get as much power with it like you have used to and I suggest you go down to 54/52(the suggested weight is around 55lbs by manufacturer). Think 58 lbs is tad too much, doesn't your arm get more tension at that weight after 1-2 hrs session?

There is also Babolat origin if you are looking for power, but it's a bit expensive (costs around double the Hyper-G) and if you string it at 58lbs your shots might usually finish on the fence.

I'd suggest you go with less weight at the beginning see how it goes and how your arm feels after a longer session and then tune it to your liking. Hyper - G is durable so most likely it is a nice starting point.

Both will lack bite, but after couple of months you can change to a more powerful or put more weight on the Babolat. Both will give you plenty of control until you get your timing back.

Cheers for that, I had never heard of Solinco and a little research had me stumble upon the Tour Bite string which seems to be right up my proverbial alley in terms of stiffness - I will give all 3 a try over the coming year

That's not the point. Murray was criticized for messing up the draw by withdrawing too late and leaving it very unbalanced, as a result. The same has happened now, as you say yourself - there's no one good on that side of the draw.

Federer's played three matches since the Paris draw came out, if he'd lost to Mannarino he'd most likely have not pulled out. Murray was carrying an actual injury and hadn't played for a month when the USO draw came out (and hasn't played at all in the two months since), the two situations aren't really comparable.

No problem mate. Hadn't tried the Tour Bite seems a lot of spin and a tad under powered. Weight at around 54-55 should be OK for that one. Seems like a good and durable string tho.

It always sucks for viewers and also organizers the best players to pull that late, especially for those who have already bought the tickets but that is always a real possibility with back to back tournaments.

Federer is 36 now and just played a grueling three setter. Murray on the other hand is at his peak age so definitely Federer should have some pass on that considering the age difference.

Yeah I don't think Fed at 36 has anything to apologize for. He should be listening to his body and selecting his tournaments accordingly. He's been around for 15 years so anyone who has wanted to watch him LIVE have had their chance before.
