Hitting power isn't everything. Consistency and movement is crucial. A fit Del Potro for all his plaudits was vulnerable even against a sub par Federer who got taken to 5 sets by bang average players. I don't think he's got the complete game to be as good as people think. He's a big hitter who on his great day which is rare can destroy anyone but that basically makes him the equal of Stan or little better and that too is debatable as Stan is quite reliable.

As a Federer fan, disappointing US open but I suppose maintaining a 3 GS lead over Nadal with each of them winning 2 slams when Federer is in his mid 30s is a good thing. Hopefully the lead is in tact come the end of 2018 as well.
Nadal hasn't won against Anderson yet so lets wait for that to happen. Forget the difference in titles, I'm just stunned Nadal managed to get 2 Slams this year. Fed and Nadal have gotten massively lucky with everyone being so shit this year.

Ladies final starting now. Expecting Keys to do well today.

Edit. Or maybe not.

Don't know either of the women in the final but Stephens is 5-3 up.

Disappointing to have these two boring players in the ladies final. Wanted Muguruza, Sharapova, Kerber or Halep.

Least we can watch with the volume on with these two, Sharapova's grunts are deafening. They should add a disclaimer every time she plays. I suppose she'll do or take anything to gain any sort of advantage. The great Princess Maria.

Keys has been all over the place... Hard to tell if it's nerves, an injury, or both. Stephens winning it is a great story, good news is they'll both have more chances if they stay injury-free and the level of the WTA stays as it is now.

The trouble with Stephens is she is like a wall - she returns everything that's thrown against her and waits for the opponent to get frustrated and make the unforced error.

Sounds like a female Rafa.

Have a cursus theory (driving) today so cant watch Nadal, he should win this right? How good is Anderson.
Nadal is the obvious favorite but Anderson has the type of game that can trouble Rafa. Big serve and big groundstrokes. He'll need to make him run around like he did with DelPo.

It'll be the French and Wimby final all over again. Anderson will have done well to make it past the 2 hours mark.

That's how I think/hope it will go. And even in those French/Wimby finals the losing players had good credentials in the slams.

We're talking about probably the greatest upset in tennis history if Anderson wins. At least his serve should help him avoid a complete whitewash but it'll be 6-1 6-3 6-2 or something like that.

This is not entirely dissimilar to Wawrinka at the AO. Wawrinka till that point hadn't taken a set off Nadal never mind beating him.

Stan bested 2 top 10 players inc. the defending champion prior to meeting Nadal in the final. Anderson in comparison beat Carreno and Querrey respectively, no.17 and 21.

Very dissimilar.

It's not identical but there are certainly similarities.

Shame about Del Potro, he really would've deserved it, but he had to run out of gas and momentum at some point.

Nadal will roll through poor Anderson now. He should count his blessings, because he won't get an easier path to a major title. I think nobody will.

What a weird tournament this has been... felt a little unreal.
Yeah pretty much. Really odd tournament all things considered. Anderson in GS final - you'd never predict 2 weeks ago.

Many injuries this year, hopefully all of the big guns will be ok next year as I'm not looking forward for the YE considering the state of the ATP now.

Stan was the 8th seed to be fair, had beaten Djokovic in the quarters (and taken him to five sets the year before) and beaten Murray to make the semis of the US Open a few months earlier. Based on what I've seen of him this year Anderson's not really the same player he was in 2015.

I hope Anderson can pull it off, but I'm expecting a bit of mauling to be honest :(

With Nadal being such a favorite, I'm quite nervous about it. Anderson really will have nothing to lose and under no pressure whatsoever and we've seen when that happens, players sometimes just play the matches of their lives against Nadal. Hopefully the first serve percent for Anderson is low.

Nadal does seem suscepitble to random upsets but I can't see it happening in a final over five sets.

As underwhelming this final is going to be, it's refreshing to see an outsider break the big-4 cartel. For players outside the top 20, tennis can be a real grind so good to see someone else get a moment in the spotlight.

Its all about whether Anderson can keep his 1st serve percentage as high as possible. He has far more aces than anyone else this tournament and on the flip side Rafa has the highest points won percentage off of return of serve. At some point one of these two conflicting stats will have to give, and whoever wins that battle will win the U.S. Open.

Also note that Anderson has the 2nd highest points won from return of serve so Rafa will not be immune from getting broken today.

Yeah lesser chance over 5 sets but with such a big hitter, you never know. If he moves him around like he did to Del Po then he should be fine.

Yeah Anderson has good starts returning and Nadal's serve is anything but the best so it's not going to be easy to hold for him and very difficult for him to break the big man. If it goes to Tie breaks, anything can happen really. Plus Nadal will probably go a set down yet again. So I'm not going to be feeling confident till he builds up a good lead.

If Nadal wins as expected it's like 2006 (or 2007 or 2010) all over again with Rafa and Roger cleaning up the grand slams. Quite remarkable staying power from both of them.

Interesting first service game for Anderson. He gets 7 of 8 first serves in, including 2 aces and yet Rafa still manages to take the game to deuce. A good sign for him.

Can see Rafa taking this fairly comfortably. Anderson's decent but his route to the final's not exactly been challenging.
