Tennis 2012

Nadal lost to Verdasco, he's out.

It's more a circus than a tournament so far!!!!!

Nadal after loss: "If it continues like this.....next year there will be one less tournament in my calendar."
Nadal was up 5-2 in the 3.set and i didn't see him complaining when he beat Davydenko on Wednesday...........what a crybaby

Boring final? Maybe you should have watched it before blindly commenting.

He's been complaining about the tournament before it started as well. It's a ridiculous surface.
Djokovic just lost in straight sets to Tipsy and he's come out with similar comments :

Djokovic: "I want to forget about this week and move onto the real clay" & "They can do whatever they want, I won't be back if clay is blue"

Before the tournament I didn't really see what the players were complaining about, clay with blue color shouldn't make that much of a difference really besides that it's easier to see the ball and there's nothing bad about that.

Problem is that the clay they use is far to slippery and dangerous, very difficult to get a grip. The players look like bambi on ice. It's a farce really and I expect that we won't see it next year.

ATP Madrid
Quarter-final

Tipsarevic 7-6 6-3 Djokovic
Federer 6-4 6-4 Ferrer
Del Potro 6-3 6-4 Dolgopolov
Berdych 6-1 6-2 Verdasco

Djokovic's game was like "I lose better now than to risk a injury or break my neck on this blue clay".
Still Tipsarevic has played very good.

As expected Verdasco already did his job this week with the win against Nadal.

WTA Madrid
Quarter-final

Azarenka 3-6 6-3 6-3 Na Li
A.Radwanska 6-4 6-4 Lepchenko
Hradecka 7-6 7-6 Stosur
S.Williams 6-1 6-3 Sharapova

Hradecka against Stosur was amazing........a women's match without a break
19 aces for Hradecka, 2nd serve ace to win the 1.set and 2nd serve ace to set up match-point

Semi-final
Azarenka 6-2 6-4 A.Radwanska
S.Williams 7-6 6-0 Hradecka

Good performance from S.Williams, a shame that Hradecka had a injury problem in the 2.set

Still amazing week for Hradecka, from the quali in the semi-final, she has beaten Kvitova & Stosur and she has played really great tennis.

ATP Madrid
Semi-final

Federer 6-4 6-3 Tipsarevic
Berdych 7-6 7-6 Del Potro

I haven't seen the matches but it's fair to say that the best players in this week have reached the final.

Federer will be extremely motivated because if he wins then he's the number 2 in the world on Monday.

I don't think so. I believe last years tournament in Madrid was played earlier in the year so the points from last year have already been lost. If he wins he will be just behind Nadal with a great opportunity to overtake him in Rome.

Great start by Berdych!

Some Serbian newspapers and the ATP website are saying that Federer will be no.2 tomorrow, I still believe that they are wrong. The points from last years tournament were already dropped this monday so it's impossible that Federer has overtaken him.

Very important that Nadal does well in Rome and doesn't drop to 3rd place before Roland Garros. You just know they're going to put Djokovic and Nadal on the same half.

After a couple of posts and some really hard thinking I've finally got it figured out

Since the masters in Rome were played earlier last year the players will drop the points from last years tournament tomorrow just like the Madrid points this monday and that will put Federer ahead, since Nadal will lose 600 points and Federer 90.

Fed is World Number 2 right now and that's a disaster because it means Fed and Djoko can't be in the same half at RG

Federer is still easily the most versatile player currently, whilst the rest are whining about the blue clay, he just carries on and do well.

ATP Madrid
Final

Federer 3-6 7-5 7-5 Berdych

I'm happy Federer has won..........it means Murray vs Nadal can only be a final at the French Open :)

WTA Madrid
Final

S.Williams 6-1 6-3 Azarenka

Amazing (Final + Tournament) from Serena

I know my stuff mate ;)

He's got the complete game.

Just a shame he keeps making errors in big grandslam knockout matches these days :(

He's number 2 again now. Shame for Rafa that he's slipped to 3. I can see him regaining it at the French though.

Oooh excellent!

So one of Federer or Djokovic gets put in Nadal's half? And if so, is that decided randomly?

Isn't it based on doing better than you did the previous year? In that case, it won't really make a difference given he won it last year.

Not sure, but I can't how winning it would not be a good thing for him. I'd like to see more competition in the men's game. Having one player dominate gets a bit boring after while. All of Fed, Rafa, and Djokovic have done that and I think it would be fantastic if Fed became a factor again and Djokovic had a dip in form. The mens game seriously needs some fresh blood.

I don't see Djokovic dominating completely this year to be honest. His form seems to be a little flat since the Australian Open despite winning a masters (or two?) event since. Nadal will definitely win the French. None of the other two particularly like the surface. I see Nadal and Djokovic again battling for the Grand Slams this season with maybe it being 2-2 this year instead of 3-1.

But obviously, I just care about what Federer does, frankly. It's been a privilege to follow his whole career. One of the best sights in sport I've witnessed. I'd love for him to recapture his Grandlsam knockout rounds form of his heyday.

Considering the way Federer is playing right now there's a very realistic chance that he's going to regain the No.1 spot. If he manages to do that then there's not really any debate anymore about who's the best player of all time. To do that at the age of 30 with the huge standard of tennis right now would be a phenomenal achievement.

ATP Rome
Quarter-final

Djokovic 7-5 6-1 Tsonga
Federer 6-1 6-2 Seppi
Ferrer 7-6 6-3 Gasquet
Nadal 6-4 7-5 Berdych

Federer looking better and better with every game on clay.
Federer's record against Seppi is 9-0, Federer has never won a tournament if he has beaten Seppi in a tournament.

Nadal near on his best and still Berdych was outplaying him at times on this surface :that-was-a-brilliant-match:

WTA Rome
Quarter-final

Na Li 6-1 7-6 Cibulkova
S.Williams 4-0 retired Pennetta
Kerber 7-6 1-6 6-1 Kvitova
Sharapova 6-4 6-3 V.Williams

Kerber's win against Kvitova means top 10 for Kerber..........i'm so happy that one of my german girls is there

Great performance from "Betterathletepova", she was so brilliant in the 1.set.
Thank you Venus for playing 95% on Sharapova's backhand

Djokovic dismantled a lately high-flying Federer today! I managed to see the entire 1st set because it finished just before the CL Final kick-off and parts of the 2nd. He should have wrapped up the 2nd comfortably but managed to win it in the tie-break.

This was his best match since the Aussie open final, perfect timing before the French Open.

I don't know who I want to win this final. I support Djokovic but if he wins Nadal will be No.3 and of course Nole and Rafa will be "drawn" to play in the same half of the bracket at the French Open. If Nadal wins he'll regain the No.2 spot.

Difficult one this!

So the final was delayed to Monday due to heavy rain and it's on now. After a close first set, Nadal is raping Djokovic all over the red.

Raping? Djokovic just squandered three break points to immediately break back in the 2nd. It's a very close match so far. You could also say that fat cnut of a linesman gave Nadal a big push in the 1st set.

The important thing for us Djokovic fans is that he's playing well today and is being agressive, just needs to be a little sharper and cut down the unforced errors.

I wouldn't mind if Nadal wins, it would guarantee that Djokovic and Nadal will not be in the same half at the french. Nadal has hit very good form!

And that's it, Nadal wins 7-5, 6-3.

Entertaining match, had some very good rallies.

Woohoo. Looks like Rafa can beat Novak again.

I thought the Aussie final must've been soul crushing for Rafa. But instead it looks like the fact that he ran Novak so close has given him new confidence.

Djokovic still has lots of work to do on clay to get the better of Nadal. Has he made a final at the French ever?

On clay, yes, there he will always be the clear favourite to win the match.

But if they both play like they did today I'm not convinced that Rafa can even it out or gain an advantage on Novak on the faster courts. Djokovic is still dictating most of the longer rallies and on the faster surfaces Nadal doesn't get the same amount of time to adjust and add enough power, precision and depth to his shots. He gets pinned down too far behind the baseline and eventually even he can't keep up with the pace so he misses or hits it too short so Djokovic can kill the point.

The reason why Novak had more trouble with Federer last year was because Federer takes the ball earlier and doesn't allow his opponents to dictate the play as "easily" as they can against Rafa. Watching all the Rafa-Novak matches from last year and this years Aussie Open Final you get the feeling that the outcome of the match will be decided by how well Novak will play his game and not by how well Rafa will play his if you get what I mean. And when it's really clicking for Djokovic he'll have a period in the match where he completely outplays Nadal and takes home a set or two rather quickly. This has happend in their last three GS Finals.

If Djokovic's standard doesn't drop significantly Rafa will have to change something. A starter would be to improve his 2nd serve because Nole has been destroying it since last year, an important often overlooked detail. We saw glimpses of it today, although the returns are not as effective on clay.

No, when he was rising through the rankings and eventually clinched the 3rd spot he was unlucky and always had Nadal in his half at the french. He knocked him out a couple of times in quarter's and semi's. Closest attempt was last year where he lost against Federer in a tight match.

The Australian Open looked like the first time that Nadal wasn't mentally weak against Djokovic and it gave me some hope and their last two matches have been brilliant. Two straight set victories for Nadal. Djokovic was understandably below par at Monte Carlo but Nadal beat a fully focused Novak today. Hopefully he's out of Nadal's head for good now.

Anyway with this victory he's up to World Number 2 again and hence can't be in Novak's half at RG. Here's hoping for another Roger Novak semi final! :D

Had it not been for that poor Nadal backhand down the line at 4-2 in the Aussie Open final , Djokovic might have been trophyless this year. By the high standards he set himself last year, he's been a bit average this time around.

When Nadal's changed his game and tried attacking it's not always worked for him. He was aggressive enough in the first set in Melbourne and he took the set but it's difficult to maintain that level for an entire match against the best returner in the game.

And what RN did in the Aussie Open final did seem to work for him because he had the match in his hand before he blew it. And his serves work better on hard courts than on clay but yes he really needs to improve that second serve.

Something that he's more and more in the two recent matches is hit that second serve into the body. That makes it slightly harder to hit away for a return winner. Anyway I'd back Djokovic to beat Nadal on the hard courts but it would be a hard battle because Djoko hasn't been anywhere close to last years level whereas Nadal has been similar or better.

What a week of stunning upsets on the grass courts. Murray lost to Mahut, Tsonga lost to someone, Nadal lost to Kohlschreiber in straight sets and then Haas just defeated Federer in straight sets in the Halle Final. The only top seed not to lose on grass this week was Djokovic and that's because he didn't play anything

Let's hope for more of the same at Wimbledon. The thought of a Djokovic Nadal boomfest Final would send me scurrying for the remote.
