Tennis 2012

Djokovic wins!

Very good tournament for him overall, rubbish final though. The heat and humidity affected both players a lot.

Given the oppressive heat and blinding sun.....i would say the match wasn't so bad and boring, 77 UE from both players says still a lot.

Djokovic was not unbeatable today, but Murray was just not there and hasn't found a way to beat Djokovic.

Congrats Novak!!!

Oh and Djokovic is going to struggle with his ranking points now. He's defending an insane amount of points from last year and has already dropped 1k points in the last 2 weeks.

Federer and Nadal are also dropping points. The only ones who gained a bit so far are Murray and Tsonga.

Davis Cup
World Group

Spain 4-1 Austria
France 2-3 USA
Czech Republic 4-1 Serbia
Croatia 1-4 Argentina

The semi-finals are Spain vs USA and Czech Republic vs Argentina.

Europe/Africa Zone Groupe 1
Great Britain 1-4 Belgium
Of course Belgium were simply better on paper (Rochus has much experience, Goffin should be a top 50 player in a few months and our best player was ranked 253) but i'm still a bit disappointed to lose the tie, i mean it was a massive chance to be in the World Group quali for September.

Evans was the "highlight" of the tie from our view, he has played well and his attitude was brilliant. He has the talent to be solid top 100 player.

We need Murray and he should play in the next season.
A Davis Cup squad with Murray, Ward & Evans for the singles and Fleming & Hutchins for the doubles could bring us really back in the World Group.

Djokovic to face Nadal at Santiago Bernabeu

Novak Djokovic and Rafael Nadal, the world's top two players, will try to set a record attendance for a tennis match when they face off at Real Madrid's Bernabeu stadium in July, the club said on Tuesday.
"The objective of this exhibition match is to set a spectator record for a game of tennis, exceeding 80,000," the nine-times European champions said on their website.
The charity event, to be played on July 14, is being organised by the Realmadrid Foundation and the Rafa Nadal Foundation, with the proceeds going to projects developed by both around the world.
Spaniard Nadal is a well-known Real fan while Serbian Djokovic has been a guest of honour at the club's facilities, and once wore a Real shirt when he walked out for a tennis match at the Madrid Masters.

Irish number one Conor Niland retires because of injury

Irish number one Conor Niland has been forced to retire from tennis because of a persistent hip injury.

Last year Niland, 30, became the first Irishman to qualify for the main singles draw at Wimbledon since 1984.

The Limerick man lost a thrilling five-set match against France's Adrian Mannarino in his first-round clash.

Niland went on to qualify for the first round of the US Open but he had to retire after only two sets against Novak Djokovic because of illness.

The Irishman achieved his highest world ranking of 129 in December 2010 and won 17 of his 29 Davis Cup matches for his country.

Niland won three events on the ATP Challenger Tour, with his most recent title coming at the Salzburg Indoor tournament in 2010.

He was also an occasional practice partner of British star Andy Murray.

"I am today sadly announcing my retirement from professional tennis," said Niland in a statement on Thursday.

"I have been suffering from labral tears in both hip cartilages and this has resulted in pain and restricted movement for the past nine months.

"Despite several cortisone injections and intensive physiotherapy during this time, the condition has progressively worsened and has prevented me from training and competing at the levels required for professional tennis.

"I have considered the possibility of hip surgery but have been advised of a lengthy recovery time without any guarantee of a successful outcome."

Niland, whose sister Gina was a former Irish women's number one, had his final competitive match in last week's Davis Cup tie against Egypt when he helped Ireland earn a 3-2 victory.

New hair cuts for Murray and Sharapova, both are looking great

Sharapova is looking hot.

Murray's tennis yesterday was even hotter. Best I've seen him play on clay ever. Sublime

Murray is in the quarter-final after an injury to Benneteau.

It was a nasty fall for Benneteau.......injured his ankle and wrist, Murray has said "There were holes on the court".
Benneteau has then a time-out for his ankle and another for his wrist, i've never seen so much tape on a ankle
He still plays a few points and has another time-out but then he sees it makes no sense.

A shame because it was a great match and battle in the 1.set.

Get well soon Julien!!

On clay Djokovic should allow the other player to serve every game, his return games are better than his own service games :smirk:

Djokovic will face Berdych in the semi. Berdych should have beaten Murray in two sets to be honest the way he played. Hoping for a Nadal-Nole final.

Nadal in the semi's, so will it be djoker vs murray and rafa vs simon/tsonga ??

Quarter-final
Murray 7-6 2-6 3-6 Berdych
Djokovic 6-4 6-2 Haase
Wawrinka 5-7 4-6 Nadal
Simon 7-5 6-4 Tsonga

I haven't seen the Murray vs Berdych match but what i've read it was a deserved win for Berdych in the end.
But i guess Murray can live with the loss because he can now watch the El Clasico in Barcelona tomorrow ;)

On clay Djokovic should allow the other player to serve every game, his return games are better than his own service games :smirk:
It was a very tough match for him against Dolgopolov yesterday after he has heard the death of his grandfather just minutes before the match.

Fed Cup
World Group

Russia vs Serbia and Czech Republic vs Italy are the semi-finals.

I want to see defo something from the Russia vs Serbia tie.

And team captain Dejan Vranes is a very look guy :)

World Group playoff
Germany vs Australia

Australia are the big favourites with Stosur & Gajdosova in the singles and Stosur & Dellacqua in the doubles.
The germans are playing with Gorges & Kerber in the singles and Petkovic & Gronefeld in the doubles.

But i've put money on a german win.
I'm really a massive fan of this german team and i think they can win the Fed Cup in 2-3 years, Petkovic, Lisicki, Goerges, Kerber and Barthel are all players with top 10 quality (Four of them are already in the top 20).

I would rather see Julia changing her top

World Group playoff II
Sweden vs Great Britain

If Arvidsson and Larsson are both fully fit (They haven't a other girl in the top 500) then i can't see at least two wins for Baltacha and Keothavong.

Robson and Watson are having a chance in the doubles.

But at least our team looks great

ATP Monte Carlo
Semi-finals

Djokovic 4-6 6-3 6-2 Berdych
Simon 3-6 4-6 Nadal

So the dream final for everyone and the big question.......

First win for Nadal against Djokovic since November 2010 or first loss for Nadal in Monte Carlo since 2005?

Fed Cup
World Group

Czech Republic 2-0 Italy

Russia 1-1 Serbia
Come on

!!!!!!

World Group playoff
Germany 0-2 Australia
That Goerges had no chance against Gajdosova is a shock.

World Group playoff II
Sweden 2-0 Great Britain
As expected Larsson beats Baltacha 6-1 7-5 and Arvidsson beats Keothavong 6-1 6-4 :(

Hopefully Murray gives Watson or Robson a match in the singles for Keothavong.

When Baltacha left the court in tears i just wanted hug her.

Nadal will get his first win against Djoker after a bad spell, tomorrow. He has been playing well this week.

Djokovic-Nadal.jpg

Djokovic had no chance from the start and to be honest i haven't seen him play that bad in over a year, it's understandable given what happened this week (He decided to stay instead of attending his grandpa's funeral) but it was still terrible stuff.

Congrats Nadal on his 8th title here!!!

But Monte Carlo is now a boring tournament.

Is Federer injured? Why isn't he playing in Monte Carlo.
No interest?!

There wasn't a official reason.

I've just read that he's in Dubai for a training camp right now.

Fed Cup
World Group

Czech Republic 4-1 Italy

Russia 2-3 Serbia
Well done Ivanovic, Jankovic, Jovanovski and Krunic

Petkovic doesn't realize how much painful this can be for Goerges

World Group playoff II
Sweden 4-0 Great Britain
Very dissapointing performances and results for us :(

Baltacha and Keothavong were pathetic.

Only Robson was good (Arvidsson 6-4 1-6 6-3 Robson), great fight from her today.......the way she saved 7 match points at 2-5 was unbelievable.

She deserves a hug from me

cana not see anyone come near Nadal now for Roland Garros. that win over Djokovic was crucial to Nadal for the rest of the year

On a personal Level - I have been pickedmy club has put me forward for the Ulster over 35's. I won't make it (I'm 38) but after giving up the game for so long, I hope to start playing at a high level again when I'm over 40.

Terrible terrible ankle injury for Petkovic in the match against Azarenka yesterday.

I'm absolutely gutted for Petko :(

Sometimes those ankle rolls look really bad but clear up in a few days...........but i don't have a good feeling to be honest.
She's just back from a knee injury.

I must admit Azarenka was fantastic helping her with the ice and helping her off court.

German media reporting Petkovic suffered a double torn ligament and will be out for 3 months.
That means no French Open, Wimbledon and Olympics.

When Petko is hurt the it's always serious.......she will have had a break of at least 7 months when she comes back in summer.........that could be pretty much a career setback.

feck!!!!!!! :(

ATP Barcelona
Quarter-final

Nadal 6-2 6-2 Tipsarevic
Verdasco 4-2 Retired Nishikori
Ferrer 6-7 7-6 6-3 Ferrer
Raonic 6-4 7-6 Murray

Murray had no interest to win the match imo.
Anyway this was a massive win for Raonic.

WTA Stuttgart
Quarter-final

Azarenka 6-4 6-7 7-5 Barthel
A.Radwanska 3-6 6-2 6-3 Na Li
Kvitova 6-4 6-4 Kerber
Sharapova 6-7 7-6 7-5 Stosur

I'm really dissapointed that no german girl has reached the semi-final, okay Lisicki is still injured and Petkovic is now injured but i've expected more from Goerges, Kerber and Barthel.

Sharapova vs Stosur was easily the best match this year so far, over 3 hours, the quality throughout was outstanding, so many great winners and not many big mistakes from both.
clap.gif

Good to see that Maria is still inside Stosur's head (10 wins in 10 matches) :)

T12_0304.jpg

Three boys........no wonder Kvitova was there :)

ATP Barcelona
Semi-final

Nadal 6-0 6-4 Verdasco
Ferrer 7-6 7-6 Raonic

Nadal has won now 50 of his last 52 sets on clay

Ferrer was really awesome in both tie-breaks.

Nadal vs Ferrer will be still :boring: ...........they should just hold the trophy presentation tomorrow

WTA Stuttgart
Semi-final

Azarenka 6-1 6-3 A.Radwanska
Kvitova 4-6 6-7 Sharapova

Brilliant match from Sharapova

Hopefully she beats Azarenka this time!!!

Rafa just became the only player EVER to win two tournaments 7 times.

Just beat Ferrer in a brilliant final. Ferrer had 5 set points in the first set and couldn't take it and he served for the second set and couldn't take that as well.

I'm glad that i haven't watched this boring final.

However congrats Nadal!!!!

Boring final? Maybe you should have watched it before blindly commenting.

Raonic just took the first set off Fed. He's been absolutely unplayable on serve in his two matches so far. 41/41 points won when his first serve lands in.
