Tactical Draft

Quick question for the committee (and @Šjor Bepo by extension): how much weight is attached to XI vs XI in this particular draft, and how much is it about treating the teams in isolation (almost like a showcase of Team 1 and then a separate one for Team 2) with more of an emphasis on building around the STAR player from a thematic perspective? Because last time around, one lad was all '523 won't work against a modern formation and sweepers are extinct' as the opening post in a mano a mano sense. Right now, we have 2 templates in mind for reinforcement - one is better for dick measuring contests like normal drafts where it often devolves into my players are better than yours (and from some of the comments in the previous match, we're given to understand that this is counter-intuitive and STAR quality around the STAR is frowned upon since he's supposed to be the STAR), while the alternative is more harmonious for the STAR in terms of laying the groundwork for him - and therein lies the problem because the ambiguity around the rating and voting process of the team(s) has cast us in a state of limbo wrt. selection (particularly the first pick). Hope this is clarified before we're supposed to pick the first player.

The first round had zero relevance attached to 11v11.

If you noticed the posts that responded to the one you mention in our match thread several posters corrected the first poster that it was not a "versus match" in anyway but rather a "comparison" of the sides maximizing their star player. Or at least that is the intent. Voters can vote on whatever they like.

Also the draft master made it perfectly clear in that match thread what he specifically is rating for his subjective opinion.

I was thinking about this too. The only match thread that had any actual discussion was @harms @Joga Bonito @Oaencha and that was a more meta discussion. The rest of the match threads were pretty much dead for any actual discussion.

In hindsight, I think this draft would have been the one to test that Group Stage format on because I too, can't see much more interesting discussion in the remaining matches. Its really just going to be several people giving their input but not much discussion IMO unless one match touches upon some meta concept like that one first round match.

I feel that Moby/Gio vs. Skizzo match would have been much livelier if it was a versus match for instance.

Its unequivocally supposed to be the bolded part, and not a normal fantasy match. For example, if I'd played you and Raees, whether or not Chumpitaz is a good fit to deal with Raul is of zero relevance.

As regards the rest, everyone else is in the same boat and I'm not sure if Sjor and the committee can really clarify things any more. In any case being prescriptive in terms of guidelines to the voters has diminishing returns, and at this stage most voters, myself included, have their own ideas about how to weigh the teams and not much is going to change that at this stage.

I'm not on the committee so your post wasn't directed at me, but I'm just restless to make my pick :D

Yeah, that's what we thought, too. But I just wanted to know if we're going to see more responses like that going forwards, especially since the current plan is to implement a more risque tactic as opposed to the straightforward 523 in Round 1 (that leaves more to the imagination, and more of buying into the scheme we wanted to employ *) where our Round 2 team might not necessarily be significantly superior from a qualitative (or name-branding) perspective - progressing from Round 1 to Round 2.

* Just to touch upon that a bit more: let's just say it might be harder to envision than a 4231 with a Top creator 10 and a Top finisher 9 where you can easily picture the symbiotic pairing between the two, or a remake - which is a bit disadvantageous if the scheme isn't properly absorbed (if that's the right term).

I'm partly to blame for the inactivity in our match as I completely forgot we had plans that day. Although even when I was around, there wasn't much feedback. @Gio and @Moby put some amazing posts together and received little in the way of feedback or comments, which was a shame for the effort put into it. I think part of it is the voters are caught in two minds as to how to assess.
 
A lot of the games were played over what was a long weekend in the UK aswell so there is always less people around then.

In hindsight, I think this draft would have been the one to test that Group Stage format on because I too, can't see much more interesting discussion in the remaining matches. Its really just going to be several people giving their input but not much discussion IMO unless one match touches upon some meta concept like that one first round match.

I feel that Moby/Gio vs. Skizzo match would have been much livelier if it was a versus match for instance.

The biggest problem is people mindset, when there is a classic match format people attack each others teams, comment on flaws etc. and in this format for some reason they are afraid to touch each other, like they are not here to battle but to present their team.
Even though you are not playing against your opponent in match format you are still playing against him so exposing and questioning his team would benefit yours but people just stay away and comment on their teams so its no surprise there is very little debate in the match threads.

I have been crazy busy with work and haven't been able to add as much imput as I would have liked. This is a lot of fun but I'm not sure the tournament system and deadlines are the best way of doing this.

Just a suggestion but how about having every team face eachother at the same time?

Instead of posters voting for one team rather than another, they can vote a simple yes or no for each team whether the manager has successfully built a team around the central player. The voting can be open for a week and the manager with the most 'yes' votes wins.

Well I can speak for our team - Forster is a great system upgrade. He's fluent in 5-3-2, individually better than Samuel and finishes off our defense while also being the outstanding stopper in the pool.

Personally I see the defense being equally important part of the set up especially since our team is playing counterattacking football and soaking pressure.

And to add to that I really don't see any viable upgrade on Signori, Vieri, Gerets and Coluna in the remaining pool for us

people are maybe happy with the foundations for main player so now they are just upgrading and repairing other parts of the team

Overall quality is still a factor, even if it is diminished compared to usual:

Plus its difficult to argue that a defence that is positively shite will benefit any player. Mostly though, as @antohan mentioned before IIRC, for managers that are happy with their initial build reinforcements are going to be somewhat marginal. More polishing up than properly rebuilding in alot of cases.

Because I already have my attackers set up as I'd want them, and the sweeper-stopper combination was a set up of that 69 Milan side, so improving one aspect of that stands me in better stead.

Building a side with shit center backs would be lazy and against the spirit of the draft, which goes a little beyond the star player himself. Poor attempt of finding a loophole in the rules considering that overall quality of the side and players is also listed as a factor.
